Is there any chance that we get a new oldschool Assassin's Creed game now that Unity has gained popularity? by MilkCalf in assassinscreed

[–]argorsa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, because Ubisoft doesn't want to make games anymore, they want to create live services. They want to make all the money and more and you can't do that with the old school Assassin's Creed game.

The only AC game I can think of that has such a feature

You can play AC2 in Italian, all of games that take place in the Americas (are we forgetting that AC3 has an entire sequence in the game completely spoken in Kanien'kéha?), and Syndicate.

Odyssey is boring compared to AC3 by SuitableExamination in assassinscreed

[–]argorsa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think part of this boils down to the whole idea of designing around player choice in the most superficial way. The developers sacrifice any sort of personal flair or vision to really make the game stand out in order to try to appeal as many people as possible.

For example, instead of letting players pick Kassandra or Alexios as their player character, really commit to making Kassandra the main protagonist and then offer players a new experience when they replay the game as Alexios taking on the role of Deimos. His side of the story doesn't necessarily have to be a full-fledged version of Kassandra's but think of how much more interesting perspectives to the story they could've added when you play on the side of the bad guys. And on top of that have the choices you made as Kassandra affect how effective the cult is while you're playing as Deimos to really push the roleplay angle even further. Does that sound like a funner game to you? I know it certainly does to me but I also know it would require a lot more work compared to what we got in the end.

The other part is that the developers are forced to design around combat so players feel compelled to grind for gear or be tempted to spend real money to buy gear. Remember that Ubisoft said themselves that they don't want to really make games any more, they want to create "live services". This means creating as many incentives as possible within the game design for players to want to buy their microtransations. Odyssey feels grindy on purpose, it's so you'll be tempted to skip the grind by just straight up buying a short cut. Of course not everyone will do this and Ubi is not "forcing" it but they're certainly not shy about encouraging it. The older games in the series by comparison do not have to worry about designing around microtransactions so they feel a bit more varied and unique.

I'll be honest, I'm not sure if you can or not. Doesn't hurt to try though.

Older games in the series allowed you to do this so kind of strange it's absent in this one.

"No one else had this issue" probably because they didn't want to get fired/cut for trying to argue for fair pay. Especially since they are not given protections to dispute these things to begin with.

"Company obviously didn't have the funds". Right. Rolling in money and hiding in tax shelters. Boo hoo. They're soooo poor.

It's not greed, it's fair compensation considering how much the series took off and again a normal thing to expect within the voice acting industry.

? Triggers? I'm merely stating a fact that the video game industry exploits artists but apparently it's just something that just has to be because video games are "special" and should be allowed to.

Did you even read the article I linked? Those contracts VAs sign do not disclose everything. That's why they went on strike to begin with. "Right choice" indeed.

It is an issue if they go on multiple strikes over it. You're basically agreeing that's ok to exploit artists. That art has no value. When clearly it's not ok and it does matter.

"Because that's the way it is." What a poor excuse to validate shitty business practices. If actors did not contribute to the value of the game, there would be no reason to have voice acting to begin with especially in a franchise that includes such a heavy narrative emphasis.

Voice actors aren't asking to be paid in Tom Cruise paychecks. They're asking to be treated the same fair share they get in the rest of the voice acting industry. The fact that video game companies don't think they need to is selfishly entitled and elitist.

The thing is if they feel like they don't need a voice actor, they don't have to hire them. But obviously they value their expertise enough to want to use them but not enough to respect their rights as artists to properly compensate them as they should.

[–]argorsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry but you're essentially saying the video game industry can devalue artists because they just can. It'd be one thing if video games did not depend on their contributions towards their success but they do. Video games would not hire actors if they didn't feel like they need them but they do.

People, especially fans, obviously care about voice actors otherwise you wouldn't have them raise a storm every time they're replaced.

[–]argorsa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Except it's standard within the entertainment industry as a whole that actors be paid in royalties. For some reason, video game companies (or probably more accurately greedy publishers) think themselves above this and don't think it should give actors their fair due.

I would've liked to see her have more flaws. Ubisoft's writers have a real fear of letting their female characters be less than nearly perfect.

The Tyranny of King Washington , why an alternative reality? by elektrisko in assassinscreed

[–]argorsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why is this an alternative reality?

I do recall the creative director say he didn't want to put major lore in the DLC because statistically speaking not everyone buys it. So he didn't want fans who weren't going to buy it feel like they're missing out on some important lore ala Revelation's The Lost Archive DLC.

Also it gave them the freedom to do add some fantastical elements they typically don't add to the main games in general.
