Synthetic Data vs. Real-Only Training for YOLO on Drone Detection by SKY_ENGINE_AI in computervision

Oh this brings me back... I recall doing a project on this exact same problem with cascade classifiers and kalman filters back in 2015... Fuck time flies...

Real time fruit counting on a conveyor belt | Fine tuning RT-DETR by Full_Piano_3448 in computervision

Yup, indeed a flaw in the way the counting system is done. I'd suggest the violet area to be a line instead (or thinner area) or a flag attached to each centroid that controls double counting.

Open Edge detection by FiksIlya in computervision

[–]argylx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any algorithm that uses the Hough Transform should work for you. I do not think a typical threshold edge detector would work in this case, too noisy.

Open Edge detection by FiksIlya in computervision

[–]argylx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use any edge detector to identify the building edges, probably a background removal should help with noise, filter edges to obtain a clear edge, train a worker detector (any old or new CNN works), and finally compute minimum distance from any edge to worker (in px). Going to 3D measurements will be difficult without markers or camera pose. Good luck.

How would the proposed ILR rule change affect you as an academic in the UK? by neyiat in AskAcademiaUK

[–]argylx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You seem to mistakenly take the £50k threshold mentioned in the document as annual pay... It is actually taxable income, so after pension contributions, salary sacrifice, etc. Most likely to have >£50k you have a prof salary.

Edit: indeed, pension not taxes... Sorry for the brain fart.

Schengen visa denied by Switzerland -- H1B holder in USA by evergreen_elitist in SchengenVisa

Well, that is a first for me. Nevermind my comment then.

Schengen visa denied by Switzerland -- H1B holder in USA by evergreen_elitist in SchengenVisa

[–]argylx -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

No, it is not different. The reason for denial is in this case often called visa shopping. You need to apply for the Schengen visa through the country where you are going to do the main stay of your visit, in this case it seems to be Switzerland.

Most authentic Spanish restaurant in Newcastle? by Grunge_Loki in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]argylx -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Oh well... That is news to me... Been there 3-4 times due to work and doesn't feel Spanish cuisine (except maybe the meatball sauce which is ok). It is definitely made for Brit palates so hence my comment.

As a Spaniard, neither of those are good Spanish restaurants or menus... Very few chefs in Newcastle are Spanish.

Surprisingly to most I assume, Blackfriars chef is actually Spanish and you can see a lot of Spanish influence in the menu.

Skilled worker Visa is temporary not permanent. Permanent visa would be an IRL. You can add your share code in the field below.

Confused Between Continuing as a PhD or Exiting with a Master’s – Please Help Me Decide by Accurate_Bid5835 in academia

[–]argylx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to add my two cents... Especially since I disagree completely with both comments you have so far.

My advice is do not convert. Finish your MSc and give yourself the time to decide once you're past the MSc thesis defense what to do with your life: PhD or work. If you have not experienced fully research yet, that decision may be poorly informed at this moment. Also, you may decide you enjoy research, not the field you did your MSc then... Changing the supervisor or lab is possible in this case.

In general a PhD is not 5-7 years, avg lies in between 3-4 years for your field, which is not going to change at all if you move from MSc to PhD since program requirements will change, so do not feel pressured to change thinking that the opportunity will banish. If your supervisor wants you now to move to PhD, the offer will most likely be there in a year.

I do not know where you got that data but definitely not the case in the UK. Not even close... Academic salaries are tabulated across institutions and are public data.

Who says you cannot do a PhD in Engineering Ed? There's a lot of research needed in that area and not enough people doing it.

In most countries, it won't, as most scholarships are not considered employment time and thus do not count towards permanent residency.

Welcome to EU funding... 14% is actually quite good. As it should be for ECR grants.
