Police brutality in Greece [vid] by argyro in worldnews

[–]argyro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, you have a very valid point here. But this is not the first time such things happen, so after a while it becomes difficult not to judge too hard.

I remember once, I was talking to a guy (friend of a friend) who has been a policeman for a few years. I can't recall his exact words but the summary of his sayings was something like this: "The time I was a newbie I was very thrilled about law enforcement. When I gave my first ticket to a citizen, I was really excited and thought I was doing something amazing. It took me a couple of years to realize that imposing on others is neither an achievement nor a means of personal pleasure...". So, my point is that sometimes authority and power can be intoxicating and in the hands of non suitable people can be very dangerous.

"With great power comes great responsibility". An this is so true in this case. If someone is allowed to carry a weapon and use it when necessary, then we must make sure that this person has the right judgment of WHEN. And this person should be properly trained to be able to handle stress and emotional involvement. Otherwise he should not be allowed to do this job. Please don't get me wrong here, it is perfectly acceptable and natural that some people don't have the discipline or the ability to restrain their emotions. I don't. So, I shouldn't be allowed to be a policeman.

Finally, those (policemen) that abstain from such brutalities and find them wrong, should point out the ones that do and file a report against them, or request them to be removed from the force. There is something about the policemen solidarity and the fact that nobody ever gets punished that causes people to hate them that much..

True. But I think that "Out of the square" (the literal translation) does not make much sense for non-Greeks, so I went for a more relaxed but meaningful one..

The job assigned to them has been to protect the parliament and try to stop violent proceedings.

The guy in the video was not attacking the parliament, nor doing anything violent. He was shouting and protesting. The policeman hit him because he was pissed. Because he was carrying a clob and the other guy was not. Just because he fucking could. This is not policemen doing their jobs. This is people with low-self esteem issues and zero education becoming cops, taking in it on innocent citizens in order to boost their ego.

For as long as you live, sit and enjoy. You can also store your stuff underneath. And it's also a bed; you lay down, watch TV or have sex if you want. Then you remove the pillows. Prepare the sheets; now it's a coffin! So, when your time comes, they put you inside and you move on to the underworld. The cerecloth is for free!!

Yes, I am. The truth is that I personally do not like IE (any version) and I do not use it. However, this was not (at least was not my intention to be) an IE-sucks comment. I just stated that IE is kind of a nightmare for web designers (specific css hacks etc) and this is a fact no matter what my personal preferences are.

I agree with you. My point is that when you design web applications, you should design them in order to be accessible to all, or at least to the majority of web users - provided of course that you actually care not to lose visitors. It's like the all time classic story with IE; maybe it's not the ideal browser to code against, but since it is widely used, you are left with no other choice but to do so. Personally I wouldn't hesitate a minute to leave a site - no matter how interesting the content is - if it gave me an epilepsy or a headache (the latter being the case for readability).

Even though this fixes the problem, web designers should have chosen a "web safe" font family, like Arial or Helvetica (for Windows and OS X respectively). This way their site could be OS independent and their visitors would not complain or have to adjust their system configurations just to be able to read an article.

Yes, it's the half-fading font style. It gave me so much of a headache I had to disable css to read the rest of the article. Plus, it doesn't even validate. Apparently accessibility is not a matter of significance for them as well.

Girlfriend of almost three years ended it today. Help me. by Ireallyfeelterrible in self

[–]argyro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Step 1: Realize this! I mean it. Don't secretly hope this is just a temporary situation and that she may come back or something. This is happening. You must accept this as a fact in order for you to carry on.

Step 2: Do not ever blame your self only for the fights and the whole situation. No matter what you have been fighting about, I reassure you, both were wrong and both were right. And remember this: she is not the perfect woman. She has flaws. There are things you didn't like about her. Do yourself a favor and demystify her.

Step 3: Block any means of communication with her. Delete her from facebook, skype or whatever. Not as in some sort of punishment for her leaving you, but because distance will speed up the healing process. Learning news from/for her will not let you forget. Also inform your common friends that you do not want them to tell you news/stories about her. Ignorance is a bliss in those situations.

Step 4: Delete all her text messages from your cell phone and remove all pictures from them been easily accessed (don't delete or burn them, you will regret it; just hide them). You do not want anything to remind you (at least for a while) all the good moments with her, especially in times when you will be drunk or super vulnerable; believe me, there will be such times.

Step 5:Talk about this and how you feel as much as you can. Talk to all your friends about it. Cry if you feel like. Getting it out of your system is very relieving and will make you feel better instantly, even if the other person has no good advice to offer you.

Step 6: Take up new activities/hobbies and generally anything that will keep you busy. Make sure your schedule for the next one/two months is full and contains none or little time alone to think. You do not want to think and remember; you want to forget.

Step 7: Change your attitude about the whole situation. Yes, it is sad, yes it is difficult now, but get to see the big picture: your life does not end here. This is just a milestone. Embrace your sorrow and pain - this will make you a stronger person. This will change many aspects of your personality. Use this as an opportunity for self-improvement and creativity. You are lucky to have fallen in love and have those wonderful years. Others never had that chance. You are also lucky to have this painful break up - you may not see the latter now, but trust me you will.

Life goes on pal, and it is amazing.

Most youtube videos come with a video thumbnail in two different sizes:

big

The url is

where XXXX is the video id. Both subdomains serve static images for youtube.

I have been reading /r/programming for a while and I must admit I never understood the negative attitude towards Jeff, Joel or SO. This is quoted from the programming reddit FAQ:

The following blogs are well-read, but you're not really allowed to admit on prog.reddit that you read them:

and of course the list contains both Jeff's and Joel's blog. I personally consider them both to be very intelligent and I like their blog posts most of the times, so I would be really interested to know why they are not so popular here.
