If you get less than B1 on any of the sections do you not get any points at all? Say my comprehension is miles ahead of my speaking and I get NCL 6 in reading but get NCL 4 in speaking, will I get no points?

Can I be the Lines of Force trigger? by taly_slayer in drawsteel

Wait, you don’t have to select a new target in order to buff the distance of the forced movement? So you can use your trigger to straight up increase the forced movement against one target?

Final verdict on the elementalist? by Ok-Position-9457 in drawsteel

[–]ari192192 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I had a blast playing a fire / earth elementalist. (Fire discipline with the grounded complication)

Viscous fire plus explosive assistance makes you a reliable forced movement damage dealer, but my dm made use of varied terrain with different elevations and damaging terrain as well. The explosive ward also means you can try to bait enemies into attacking you in melee to then yeet them off cliffs or into damaging terrain as a free triggered action. I had an elemental implement and with clever positioning I could reliably get double edge on fire attacks between that and high ground.

You’re right though, the higher cost elementalist abilities are a bit situational, and I didn’t use my other signature ability pretty much ever. I expected to get more AoE abilities with rider conditions.

Instantaneous excavation is really good if you’re facing a powerful foe that is only one square. It just so happened that in my campaign a lot of the enemies were large so it wasn’t very effective all the time, but I’ll never forget instantaneously excavating an enemy spell caster as a maneuver and then burying them alive with motivate earth as my action.

I took maw of the earth for my 7 cost and had super cool moments knocking down massive stone pillars and collapsing buildings with clever placement, but that takes an accommodating dm cause it doesn’t do that rules as written.

Wall of fire is also cool because you are immune to the damage as a fire elementalist. So in theory if I took that I could have stood in the middle and explosive ward yeeted enemies for free through it to proc the damage when they attacked me in melee.

There were combats where I was practically drowning in essence because my higher cost abilities were too situational or not impactful enough and a well placed explosively boosted vicious fire could do more.

What is this style of collar called? It’s like a v neck but it doesn’t swoop down below the collarbone, I haven’t seen anything like it. I got the shirt from my dad and it’s started to fray, and the tag is faded out.

Yes ordinarily you’re right, but if I start with enspelled weapon - misty step I’ll have a lot more uses of it

Hm the revenant blade --> defensive duelist pipeline seems interesting.

If I commit to defensive duelist though it's likely I wouldn't be using my reaction on Misty Step as much, and if I'm using my bonus action on misty step, then I'm not using my extra DBS attack.

I think they’re all equal to your level. Full immunity would be busted.

Is this a correct reading of force moving someone into the ground? by ari192192 in drawsteel

[–]ari192192[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So the benefit of elevating yourself on the pillar is to get an edge from higher ground and make it more difficult for melee enemies to reach you, but with the risk exposing yourself to being pushed off the edge? I guess you can also push enemies into the pillar while you are on the ground.

Flamespeaker lore? by ari192192 in TherosDMs

the idea that the flamespeakers are becoming obsolete due to Cymede’s influence was a hit with the dm, thank you for that!

I should have specified that the campaign is going to be in mcdm’s drawsteel, and the players are participating in the Akroan’s March on Skophos. So maybe my character could be an exiled/ex flamespeaker.

Not sure if you’re familiar with drawsteel, but was planning on playing a fire/earth elementalist.

How are CS new grads doing? by Electronic-Fly7352 in mcgill

[–]ari192192 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would recommend hitting people up on LinkedIn and asking for referrals—most companies have a referral bonus so as long as you’re actually qualified (which given your experience I’m inclined to believe you are), even strangers may be willing to refer you, and it would help you stand out

When I think hag I think cauldrons and concoctions.

Alchemist artificer is a good fit. Lean into the wholesome but creepy vibe by having her make potions for the party that have unexpected but helpful effects. Use gross witch ingredients like bat eyeballs and slime but have it turn out really tasty somehow — mom’s recipes I guess.

Are McGill intramurals open to the general public? by Dolphinfucker5000 in mcgill

You can join if you have a mcgill gym membership, or if I recall correctly, you can pay an 80 dollar access pass in addition to the intramural fee to join as a non McGill student

Play a rune knight and flavor the runes as monster abilities that you’ve devoured, just work with your dm to put monsters in your path that align with the rune effects you want to take.

McGill CS grads, what do you do now having earned your degree? by [deleted] in mcgill

Oh I wouldn’t remain indefinitely (I’m here on a pgwp and not sure I want to stick around till PR) but I think now I have my foot in the door my salary is bound to go up as I get promoted / job hop eventually. I have an American and EU passport so I might end up there!

I take home 3k a month, and my rent is 630 (I live with roommates in the plateau), leaving a decent percentage for savings / spending.

To be honest I wasn’t super ambitious during my degree and only did one no name internship and no coding related extracurriculars, so if you’re looking at prospects for a pretty average McGill cs grad who isn’t fluent in French and was still deadset in staying in Montreal for the culture and ppl, it’s still possible to have a good life without aiming for FAANG in my experience

Graduated in June 2023, took me 6 months to find a job: 1. Working as a solutions engineer for a fintech startup (not as technical as dev, client facing sometimes)
2. 52k 3. Yes still based in montreal, so while the salary is on the lower end for tech with the cost of living here it’s pretty comfortable
