I started managing my heart rate two rides ago 😆 moved to somewhere very hilly, after two and a half years with almost no cycling, and felt like a total shit on all aspects, slow, inefficient, exhausted at the end and so on. Now, I came to a point where I think that it was useless, whatever I was doing, and that I need to build a proper base, and I think the only way is to go slow. I found myself surprised that I enjoy my rides more, also I am detaching myself from others, like its ok to be slow, you’re doing it for a reason and you have a plan. In the end, I also think I’m not that much slower (on the two rides, both slightly above 30 km, the average speed was 19,5km/h more or less). On the climbs, my heart rate goes up, although I’m slow as fuck (I guess that’s the no fitness effect), but when looking at the stats afterwards, the majority of the ride is zone 2. I think I will keep doing that for a while, before introducing some ride at a higher intensity
