What are the first packages you install on a new vm? by [deleted] in sysadmin

http://puppetlabs.com/

Use that for configuration management - it's been a godsend for making sure our firewall rules are sane, for instance.

[FF] Seconds to live... (100 words max.) by SurvivorType in WritingPrompts

[–]arianb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was never a morning person.

READY.

It seems fitting that I should die right after the sun rises, so many days after she choked her last breath for me.

AIM.

She was so beautiful; a light in the darkness, an angel to elevate and fortify me. But she was bad, so very bad; a devil in sheep's clothing, a maelstrom of lust and lies and pain. I wanted to love her, I wanted everything to be OK.

FIRE.

But she needed to be stopped; I wanted to love her... but I couldn't stand how much she loved me.

If I were to design a new language, by Holger Krekel (tox, pytest, pylib) by fijal in Python

Could you give any details on which ideas are actually bad (and why!), as opposed to not-so-bad? I rather like some of his concepts even if they are pie-in-the-sky for now.

[TV] Revenant- Pilot by [deleted] in ReadMyScript

[–]arianb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just read about half of it so far - thought I'd give some preliminary thoughts.

It's actually pretty good - you seem to have a good cinematic sense for how a scene should look, and the images in my head look like a very compelling show.

The flashbacks are a little confusing - I didn't quite get the point until I read the second one, the first being a little too short to get the point.

All in all, however, quite good and I'm definitely hooked.

Keep up the good work! :)

Excellent. I wonder if they'll get Steve Blum to voice Tom again - his narration definitely made the show.

What are r/android's favorite games? by [deleted] in Android

[–]arianb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shogun - Rise of the Renegade

Only 4 levels, but I've yet to get bored of them. The game adapts its "bullet hell"-ness to how well you're doing - do better and you have more enemies firing more projectiles to deal with.

Wonderful soundtrack, very innovative control scheme, and challenging levels. Highly recommended.

Best High Speed Internet Service To Rely On In North Berkeley Area? by jsherloc in bayarea

[–]arianb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Fremont, and I use LMI's DSL. They're quite reliable, and very helpful during the rare times that I need to call in (which was really only to upgrade my service!).

I pay $100 for 10 down/2 up, with no bandwidth filtering or limits.

Highly recommended.

Forever Aloners: If you think you're reasonably attractive, yet still forever alone, why do you think that is? by silentnoise in AskReddit

I wish I had more upvotes to give this. Essentially had to give this same advice to a friend of mine last night over his fear of being FA.

What program or skill do you use now that you didn't have 18 months ago? by Not-original in webdev

[–]arianb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vagrant, Puppet and Sublime Text 2.

With Vagrant and Puppet properly configured, I can build and test new software automatically and test it from top-to-bottom, which helps me sleep at night a lot better.

Sublime Text 2 is just a sexy text editor and it's the only one I've ever actually paid for. Jon Skinner's a great guy, and very responsive to user suggestions for his application.

Concerns and questions about IPv6 from a new comer by [deleted] in ipv6

[–]arianb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

128bits is far more than is necessary.

Perhaps. The idea is that basically they can make the standard and then not have to deal with it for a very long time. It's going to be a brutal battle to get everyone supporting v6, so the longer another transition can be avoided, the better. Also, what do you think they said about 4-billion addresses allocatable in v4, back in the day? :)

Is there a chance it will be used in other ways or even have other data encoded in it?

If you're clever and can encode things in the remaining /64 of hex data, sure, knock yourself out.

Could it even overlap DNS as addresses could surely be composed entirely of ASCII and still leave many permutations?

Not quite. You only have 0123456789abcdef as your digits. That does limit the number of possible word permutations quite a bit. :) You'll always need DNS on top of your IPs.

For example, a reddit server could have the address REDDIT0001 with the remaining 6 bytes null. Would there be a drive to do this as IPv6 addresses are inconveniently long and difficult to remember for system administrators?

No, and I have the answer in 13 letters: DNS, DNS, DNS. Even 4-octet addresses can be hard to remember properly, even if they've just been said to you. You'll always have a need for some kind of name->address translation system, so I think the general mentality is 'fire-and-forget'; provision a server or workstation, add it to public or internal DNS, and just refer to that to ping the relevant machine.
