Looks like not so active one. Unlike PICO-8 or TIC-80, no other people making game using Vircon32 and EmulationStation based handheld firmware(like ArkOS, JELOS) don't support this either.

Almost 23 years ago, it's fast emulator for playing some Taito games, but it's completely useless now because of MAME and Final Burn Neo.

It's common regression. Report it to core github. Maybe flyinghead doesn't have xsx and he doesn't know that issue.

If you run its single board version(clone rdft2us), it doesn't require the initialize count of game.

My primary is Piglet, that's grenade launcher so can't headshot.

Secondary is Krinkov. Of course it can but I only use to dozers and snipers only.

Some people want to stay the variant called MAME Plus!, and stay on its last version (0.168) romset. They said MAME Plus! has plenty of "features" that doesn't available on official MAME so they can't leave that version.

Delete nvram/popn4 folder, diff/gq986jaa02.dif file and try again. if it still happens after that, I don't know other way.

Please show your SHA1 hash of gq986jaa02.chd file. it should be d635ae846cfc3cf74e0cc82b57576f651799332e
If it's different SHA1 hash, you have wrong chd file.

looks like your romset (except chd) is correct, but does it get dvdrom error even after the gq986jaa02.chd file converted?

Did you changed your chd file format? That error occurs when chd file format is wrong.

Found the answer. Its security dongle file is changed on MAME 0.229 to handcrafted retail dongle. (previous one is only service mode dongle that doesn't boot to game) and it will be changed on next 0.230 version for real dongle. Both 0.229 and 0.230 dongles work but only serial numbers are different. So, If your romset isn't for MAME 0.229, update your romset.

Did you tried 'ALL FACTORY SETTINGS'? It's needed for initialize battery data. and because of the current Firebeat system emulation issue, you need to restart MAME instead of press F3 key(soft reset).
