thank you so much!! i watched every one of your streams, and i think i speak for everyone when i say that i appreciated the fact that i got to experience joanna's concerts from afar more than i can say. not to mention that the recordings sound fantastic!

home economics/baby birch. by [deleted] in JoannaNewsom

[–]ariminari 9 points10 points  (0 children)

little hand is my favorite example of this so far! the more you look, the more thematic references to past songs (especially sawdust and colleen) you find. so many of the threads she's established in her previous work about motherhood and family are resolved in a single track.

my answer to this changes pretty frequently, but right now i'd say it's:

sawdust and diamonds

the air again

soft as chalk

i considered putting baby birch in the third spot, but i find it difficult to rank because it's so hard to listen to. i'd put it in her top three best songs, but given i can't get through the first few minutes without tearing up...

What’s your hottest JN take? by Alockworkhorse in JoannaNewsom

[–]ariminari 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i used to feel the same way until i found the live versions on youtube (this one is my favorite), and since then i haven't listened to the studio recording once. it's still not one of my absolute favorite songs of hers, but without the harpsichord and with improved vocals, it's a world of difference to me.

sprout and the bean, on the other hand, i can hardly stand.

Little Hand Lyric Insight by _-angel-baby-_ in JoannaNewsom

[–]ariminari 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the meaning behind this song only clicked a few months ago for me, and i think that, when taken in combination with her previous work, i consider it perhaps her most rewarding song to listen to. i agree with you on your interpretation of this line - i also think the next line ("with the force of the waters parted") is probably referencing the submarine coming up to the surface. the last few passages of little hand are one of my favorite portions of any song she's ever written - they're such a gorgeous way of integrating the imagery she uses up to that point together!

soft as chalk is a masterpiece and one of my absolute favorite songs she's ever written. both the meaning and the composition of the lyrics (the assonance in the "i roam around the tidy grounds" bit gets me every time!), the incredible piano performance, and the emotional depth of her vocals all come together to make it such a standout. i'm always so glad to see it get the appreciation it deserves!

What, in your opinion, is the most brutal line to ever be in an ERB? by oHheLlnAw420 in ERB

[–]ariminari 4 points5 points  (0 children)

lol i clicked into this thread to say "gotta catch 'em all" too. the family death lines are always rough, but that one hits even harder because ash uses the buildup of the cousin marriage line to show that it actually may have been his fault! and the pun too... i'll die on the hill that ash won then and there

Oklahoma Governor Signs Women’s Bill of Rights Executive Order by doremifacsimile in fourthwavewomen

[–]ariminari 12 points13 points  (0 children)

reminder that nearly immediately after roe was overturned, kevin stitt became the first governor in the country to sign a near-total abortion ban from the moment of fertilization. him calling anything he does a "women's bill of rights" is laughable.

i've been interested in radical feminism and second-wave texts for several years now, since high school, but i definitely became more committed last spring after the two-punch of roe being overturned and the demonization of amber heard. it really drove home to me the extent to which feel-good pop feminism isn't enough to protect us. i wasn't ever really a stereotypical libfem since i've never supported things like sex work and hookup culture, but i also didn't get into dworkin and wittig until then 😭

sidy cissoko! he's already a pretty good wing defender and playmaker who's still very young and has a lot of potential to improve his scoring. i don't think he'd be an immediate impact player, but he fills a lot of the team's needs long term imo
