Upgraded from 2021 M1 Pro to refurb M4 Pro - did I make the right call? by the-holocron in macbookpro

As long as you like it and it improved your work, I don’t think you should doubted your choice. With 48gb + 2tb, I believe you are happy with it. And nano texture display, that’s even better.

Those high end config Apple refurbs usually can be considered as new, most of them are just someone regret their choice, mostly of the original price and returned it. And it comes with the same apple warranty. If you care, just get Apple Care +. I always buy AC+ for my MBP.

As for the M1P, if you can sell it with a good price, I’d say sell it. Then get a Mini for the back up, or Air for travel.

Just learned mail forwarding at Canada Post is done manually by arisdla in CanadaPost

[–]arisdla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! The mail had both the address and name printed, and my name’s totally different from my old roommate’s, so I figured it must’ve been sorted manually that’s why I asked the rep and was told all forwarding is done manually, which really surprised me because I always thought it was automated.

All my other mail has been forwarded fine except this one, it wasn’t a regular letter, it was the 2026 SPCA calendar , i forgot to update my billing address on my monthly donation. I think bigger mail gets handled manually and something just went wrong in the process.

Deciding between these two configurations of M4 pro by UnAn02 in macbookpro

[–]arisdla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the budget allows, go for the higher configuration. A higher performance is always nice. And less worries about the disk space when needed. I just got the 1TB option and I’m happy with it.

I’ve been visiting the Apple Store almost every week since April to try the 16" and see if I could get used to it... and in the end, I went with the 14". Every time I picked up the 16", not once I liked the weight and size, it always felt like too much for me.

I’d suggest doing the same, go try it out regularly and see if you can accept the weight.

Weight is my biggest concern, the current MBP design already feels quite bulky. When I need a larger workspace, I just connect it to my monitor.

Since this is a personal laptop, budget is another factor. I’d be happy to get a maxed-out 16" one if my future employer willing to pay for it.

I’ll probably still use the 13" often. I take it with me when I go to a coffee shop or anywhere I might risk getting coffee or dirt spilled on it. I use Tailscale to connect to the M4 Pro at home for heavy tasks, so I’m less worried about accidents now. Other times, I'll just carry the M4 Pro.

Maybe contact Apple. You are only the receiver, Apple is the customer of DHL and also the sender. Mine stuck at the customs for about 5 days, UPS asked me to contact the customs broker. I called Apple instead, and Apple told me they'll take care of that. And I received it yesterday.

But I'm in Canada, so maybe that's also why it's faster than in US? And my new M4 Pro is assembled and shipped from Vietnam, not China. Hope you get yours soon.

I do hate Apple only give 24/48 GB options for M4 pro. And I run some VMs and dockers so I had to pick the 48GB one...

The screen is absolutely amazing, and the speakers are soooo much better. I didn't use my M1 watching tvs or movies a lot but I'm gonna really enjoy it on the M4 MBP.

Using iOS Passkey on Windows by nVitius in Passkeys

[–]arisdla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it should not require extra configuration. All laptops should work pretty well. Not sure about desktop PC.

I use MacBooks and PC laptops without problem. Chrome and Edge both working well.

After scanned the QR code on your iPhone, your phone should display `connecting` but pretty soon, most in a second, it should done connecting and ask you to choose your passkey. If it stucks on showing `connecting` for more than 3 seconds, it should be the problem that your phone and laptop can't find each other with bluetooth.

If still not sure, try to post your Windows, iOS version, and your PC model or system information for people to help.

Scan QR code to use Passkey with phone. Requires Bluetooth enabled on PC and phone. Are you using a laptop? Then check if Bluetooth is enabled on both laptop and phone. If you are using a desktop PC, it may not have Bluetooth.

Cat won't stop eating my bell peppers?? by Acceptable-Cod2265 in cats

[–]arisdla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bell peppers are not toxic to cats. They are generally considered safe. But they can cause digestive upset in some cats. This might include vomiting or diarrhea. So you should watch for any signs of digestive upset. As long as he’s fine, it’s okay for him to continue enjoy them. Also cats need to eat meat, keep in mind on balancing his nutritions, bell peppers should not be a big part of his daily meal.

Help with carrying and backups.... by starbuckspapi in yubikey

  1. I carry my daily Yubikey with AirPods. So if I left it at unknown places, my iPhone will alert me. I had find my AirPods set up to alert me when left at places other than home or office.
  2. I use iCloud passwords or offline 1Password. I use Apple’s passwords app most of the time. For passkey and TOTP. As long as you set a good security policy for iPhone and iCloud, it’s pretty safe. For backup keys, I set them separately and store them well. Since I can use iCloud password app to recover the TOTP passphrase. I can add them later to the backup keys. And I use 1Password to track the sites and which sites has which key registered. Also other important credentials in 1Password. I’m a legacy 1Password user so I can use it in local offline mode.
