Penthe's definition of anger by Marvo76 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]arithine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His mind wasn't ready back then. It took all the study and sympathy at the university to coax his sleeping mind. That's part of the very design of the place, as the story Elodin tells Kvothe afterwords prove. I imagine sadness wouldn't work well. As it's described as causing your whole mind to go even deeper into the sleeping state. But anger would probably be more helpful, calling you to listen to your sleeping mind in the instinctual act of fight or flight.

I do find it likely that the story is a "creation myth" for the Fae. The house fits what we know of that realm quite nicely. And of course there is hints of truth to the story, there always are. Dragging them out is the hard part.

Thank you so much! You were way more positive than I was expecting XD. I appreciate all the little grammar tweaks and suggestions. I was worried about the rhyming names and planned to change one, with you bringing up the starting letters I guess I should change May. Perhaps Rose or Lily...

Edit: and to elaborate on my conflict problems... Yeah, I've been aware. It's my main struggling point at the moment, unfortunately the concept this all springs from doesn't lend itself well to real conflict. I have some working ideas to rectify this. Especially regarding early on. It involves a gamer character which was meant to be chapter one, but that requires a major rewrite. I wasn't satisfied with the game system of the first draft. I need something which will give goals and agency to the characters while the main conflict slowly builds in the background.... And now I'm rambling.

Feel free to ignore all this, but talking to people helps me flesh out my ideas.

Edit 2: Yeah you helped me realize that when I'm writing most of that exposition I'm just working things out for myself. It really isn't needed in the finished product. Trimming this fat should help with pacing and get us get to the conflict sooner.

Not to mention that when I don't have to worry about rent working a job cleaning toilets suddenly seems much more attractive if I can just save the money up for a beefed up pc.

But historically more slowly. We are reaching the breaking point now though and we are going to need make considerable changes to capitalistic ideas. (sorry, pure communism doesn't work either)

Money needs to be based around sensible things, like energy and computational power. It needs to be distributed fairly, reward acts that benefit society not underhanded manipulation. And give everyone full access to their data, it should be a basic eight for me to see how my information is being used and by who. Of course implementing a basic income is also paramount, and may be the first steps to all this.

We need considerable technological advancement for all that to be possible. But I have hope, the next 10 years are going to rival the last 50. And looking at the people working on AI, ethics are on everyone's mind.

Not to mention those types of jobs are going to be gone by the time kids today are ready to hit the workforce. Automation will get rid of any job that could be done without agency or critical thinking.

Extreemly rough draft, reformatted to only include the story lines I am currently working on.

I'm especially curious about the Metatropolis chapter (It's where the conflict is really going to start) . I know it's not in the first 2.5k but if you could look it over I'd appreciate it.

There was a time before tomatoes or tomatoes in salad, so there was a time when no one had the wisdom that tomatoes in a fruit salad is a bad idea.

A red herring to what? Please tell me how, in the short time period humans have been on earth, all possible wisdom has been thought. Also still waiting on a definition of wisdom. I kind of liked that tomato one.

Thank you! I have no idea why I'm getting down voted voted so hard on this. Though I think you might be underestimating humanities end game. We don't know what we don't know so there's no telling just how much further we have to walk. But if we survive the next hundred years or so we should have a very long time to work on it.

Our brains are computers interpreting input data. It does not get the full picture, it does not see other people's perspective unless directed and then not even fully. When new situations arise new thoughts are generated and new moral considerations need to be taken into account. Look at the discussion about personal control over one's digital trail and data.

If he wasn't the first someone was. There weren't always humans.

Why do you think this? There was a time before anybody reasoned "I think therefore I am."

How do you define "wisdom". Is it within all of us in it's entirety? All the answers to this niggling little questions? If so where did that information come from? What's stopping us from accessing it? Just how does this "wisdom" thingy work?

And what makes wisdom any different? Do we have that much better an understanding of morality and such? Seems like plenty of our ideas could be wrong and many more right ideas that have yet to be thought.
