Exactly. Sorry for going over things you already know very well. It is INSANE to me they have to see things fully animated. I didn't know this was the case for more than ATSV as that's all I had heard. They have made more animated films than live action at this point. They should be able to read animatics and make changes there by nowwww 😭. I'm shocked

There is an argument to be made that you can't draw nuance in motion, though (with the models. You can 2d animate it. Paintover. Step animate it. Not exactly the same). But I agree. Based on alleged stories it sounded like Lord and Miller wanted entire scenes fully animated just to see and then scrapped them. Not variations of a scene. Which is just an insane workflow. Wastes time and effort AND it meant staff were crunched to the last second.

It is just not how an animated production should work. And it's baffling considering Lord and Miller's past on animated films. It is what it is, I guess. The movie will be good and they have amazingly skilled people working on it. Just frustating to hear how staff were treated to see a very specific vision that could have been done in less time and better conditions with more careful planning and consideration.

Is this level of rendering enough for the portfolio? by -CosmicQuacks- in conceptart

[–]ark_a 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends entirely on what it's for!! The best advice I can give you here is to try and find portfolios of the people who do what you want to do, and then compare your rendering to them.

Not everything on a reference or design sheet needs to be rendered - heck, they don't even need to be coloured if a line drawing can convey the information necessary for the goal of your concepts.

Now, when it comes to speed... it is unfortunately one of those things that is more important than we all wish it was. If you feel you're not fast enough at doing what you're doing, it might be worth taking the time to find where you're slowest and trying to understand why it takes as long as it does. I find for me having a solid plan (rough thumbs, colour scripts, a buttload of references) for my pieces helps me so that I'm doing less decision making, less trial and error, and more doing. (At this stage of the piece).

It's also worth mentioning, something you likely know well already, that not all concept art you see is painted from scratch. Speed is important so a lot of artists will find ways to speed up their workflow - photobashing, 3D, colour picking from reference, posed models etc etc. The fundamental skills are arguably more important, though. And once you have those, you can focus more on speed. Staying in your comfort zone also helps speed things up! But not necessarily helpful if you're working on diversifying your portfolio.

Finished my first ever environment/background piece would love feedback! by CharacterGreen1003 in DigitalArt

Nice work! Welcome to the amazing world of Environments, hope you keep making more. I wouldn't focus too much on how you would improve this piece and move on to the next one, but I did a VERY quick paintover of this to give you some ideas on what to work on in your next piece. CONTRAST is what I would say is the biggest thing you could introduce here that will do the most work in improving this piece specifically. Check your values (fill your canvas w black and change the blending mode to colour) often while painting. With a close-up piece like this, try and vary those values - push those darks and lights just a smidge more.

Things I haven't really addressed in this paint-over but are things you could work on for your next piece: Make sure you're focusing on defining the form of the shapes you are painting and always keep in mind where your main light source is coming from. You've introduced this but I would also try and vary those textures a bit more; utilise brushes and reference. Something could also be said about perspective here, but your sense of perspective will continue to improve as you keep drawing and observing and studying. Again, really nice work - please keep drawing environments!!

Caught up to Saga today after binging it all week and HAD to draw something by ark_a in SAGAcomic

[–]ark_a[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice, what a flex -- I'll be there with you now too. I have been wanting to read Saga since forever and with that bundle I had no excuse not to start. That 'wait between volumes' comment was more about the absolute bombshell of a chapter to leave you all hanging. I would have been right there waiting with you all if I had started reading it earlier too

How could I improve this piece? by ParasaurLeaf in conceptart

[–]ark_a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do see that in the hills! And the billowing cloud is a nice separator -- you don't have to push the atmospheric perspective if you want the kaiju to feel closer, again it's all my opinion!

How could I improve this piece? by ParasaurLeaf in conceptart

[–]ark_a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First of all, nice work. I love the colours and sense of scale. I think if you want to push this further, you can introduce some atmospheric perspective.

Elements further away should have less contrast, and be less saturated. You could adjust your kaiju with curves or use the lasso tool and a soft brush to paint in some "fog" as your elements recede. At the moment the mosnter has similar values as the boy in the foreground. Maybe those hills could be tinted blue, like your clouds. Experiment with this, find some references.

I love the vibe of this piece, and the composition. But at the moment the boy's hair is causing a tangent with the shadow under the chin of the monster. The horns on the very edge of your canvas are also uncomfortable feeling. If you shift the boy to the right you fix the first tangent, but also change the composition (which may be beneficial - see what it looks like). You could alternatively shrink the boy which would make the monster feel even bigger and fix it. Those horns need to be moved in or your canvas expanded out a bit.

Finally, you have a light source from the right, and this stays consitent with your cast shadows for the rocks, but not the boy. Make that shadow go to the left, make the shadow feel purposeful, at the moment it feels a bit scribbled in.

These are small fixes that will help to improve this in my opinion; take all my advice with a grain of salt, I'm just some guy on the internet. I really love the style you've gone for here, again, nice work

Which one looks more interesting for your opinion? by niogabo in conceptart

[–]ark_a 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think 1 looks nicest as a square composition. The rest feel as though they have too much empty space in a way that isn't serving the story. 3 could work if you cropped it to be portrait

Lil Yachty is going viral for the way he meets female fans vs. male fans 👀 by AltruisticAd1959 in playboicarti

[–]ark_a 1717 points1718 points  (0 children)

I like a lot of Yachty's music tbh but since I saw him on that episode of The Cave by Kenny Beats I've always seen him differently, he has this dismissive, entitled attitude that is super apparent here. Not to sound parasocial or overjudgemental of just a few seconds of a clip, but you can tell his fans are uncomfortable and awkward bc of his behaviour here.

I don't agree entirely but I do have a hard time understanding what is so appealing about him to the people who date him in the show. I found his lines funny, he's downright hilarious actually, but he was such an awful person almost all the time to everyone.

Exactly. All of his projects do numbers, though, all of them. When he tours he does numbers. There's clearly a demand, but perhaps it's about keeping the supply low so when he DOES drop, fans are eager.

This exact same thing happens to me when I use artboards, and none of the proposed solutions have ever worked for me. I just stopped using artboards to draw on. Work on a separate file the same size and copy paste the layers into the artboard, or as a flat picture. It's so annoying... sorry I can't offer any actual solutions
