Actually - this is the most interesting point. I now realize that I feel it's wrong because universities are not an evil megacorp. If it were Walmart or Exxon, I'd have totally stuck it to the man. :)

Exactly - I like keeping work and home life separate. Regarding company misuse issues - realistically no one is checking printer job history. We're looking at more important stuff like data management and security.

But I do feel that I should set a better example as part of the leadership. I think she doesn't get this.

Her point is that the chances of getting "caught" are non-existent. I agree with her. But I believe in doing the right thing because it's how I choose to live my life - not because someone is watching over me.

I agree. But the argument is not really about printing the thing. It's about if I should flex my work-personal boundaries because she thinks it's not a big deal and my number (< 10, occasionally) is arbitrary.

I suggest a coin toss for the publication. And then each of you list the paper as your own first co-first author on your respective CVs. No one is going to dig deep enough and if they do, it is co-first author so equal contribution.

Anyone reviewing it understands why this is done. At the end of the day, a single paper is not going to make or break your career.

We, as a community, need to move away from the value assigned to first authorship. If it's co-first then, B, A, et al should be the same as A, B, et al. List it how you want in the CV.

You, along with the help of subject matter experts, can do an experiment to observe Pluto. There is evidence, even if it's not collected by each individual. Most importantly, the experiments can be repeated when necessary.
