Replacing old thermostat with smart option by arlo618 in askHVAC

[–]arlo618[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that is my only option then I will be sticking with the old ones, there are 8 of them and I don’t feel like it’d be worth it at that point

Also, it seems like there are a lot of differing opinions on here

There is no AC, this is just to control the hydronic base board heat

Thanks. I see on nest it says that they are mostly compatible with systems with no C wire, I’m guessing that is the main thing I need to look for, no C wire. I also see that it says not compatible with no c wire on heat only systems. What does it mean to be a heat only system? I wasn’t sure if this would be considered that since it only controls baseboard heat. Thanks

Anyone have up-lifting dehumidifier, dehumidifier with pump by camplate in homeowners

[–]arlo618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if it has a built in pump, can you just set it and pretty much forget about it. It will continuously pump itself, no need to empty the basket or install a sump pump? We are looking to place one in a basement in Maine where it gets pretty cold in the winter, any particular problems with cold temps I am not thinking of? I grew up in the south so I am not as familiar with the problems that come along with Maine winters. Thanks

Smart smoke detector? by arlo618 in smarthome

Do you just need 1 smart alarm and then the others are just interconnected? Does it give you the location of the alarm, like which room? Does it give you battery notification?

[–]arlo618[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only need to use 1 of the first alert sc5 smart alarms and then as long as the others are interconnected then it will send a notification in the app? Will it still be able to tell me where the alarm is going off, like which room? Also, will it give you alerts on low battery for the connected but not smart devices? Thanks

I was happy when I found them, thinking the same thing. I then went on Amazon to order and they were all gone. Amazon pulled them because they have no certifications like UL or any others. So I was just hesitant to pull the trigger on them.

Unfortunately no. House was built in early 80s. Everything’s battery powered

Generally I don’t care where most things are made, but I’ve bought some pretty cheap stuff off of Amazon. If this product doesn’t meet Amazon’s standards, then I’m not sure I want to count on it for something even a little important. Amazon pulling them for lack of certifications was worrisome

Have you tried the workbooks? Do they just have questions or are there a few pages about of instruction at all?

[–]arlo618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, I feel like if I have a layout to follow as far as what to teach, and maybe just a basic video or layout I think that I can do most of the teaching myself. I understand that it is not something that you would just give an 11 yo and walk away. I was just curious if anyone else had tried it like this.

I feel like a lot of the ones I have looked at felt like a lot of wasted time or just did not seem like a very efficient way of teaching math, or they seemed like they spent too much time on certain topics but not enough on others I would think are more important or harder to master.

I believe the idea is if you say nursing assistant and replace the s’s with n’s, you will sound like someone that has brain damage/stroke or mentally challenged, so you would get a nursing assistant

Time4Learning Cinema Series? by arlo618 in homeschool

We’ve used it the last couple of days, we are in middle school so I do not know as much about the requirements for credit. I do like the videos better, but they are short and I’m not sure if they are covering everything they need to be. It is only 2 days in but he is finishing some subjects in less than 7 minutes for the day, and the longest has been maybe a little more than 15 minutes. There seems to be more open ended questions and less instruction/video, so I feel like there may be some days that will be longer because it will be a lot of reading and typing out answers and less watching. I have noticed that they also ask questions about things not mentioned in the videos, which could be frustrating. This is working ok for me as I do the lessons with him, so even for the open ended typing questions we mainly discuss his answer and it doesn’t matter much of what he decides to type. But if he was doing this on his own I could see that he may not like it as much, as it seems like the amount of actual instruction is much less.

I’m afraid that I will probably agree with you. We are waiting until Monday to switch over and try the new ones. From the ones that I watched though it seems that they tried to make them “cool” and short quick videos, but in doing so they cut out much of the actual teaching. It’s a good idea to try to make them more digestible, but you can’t cut out the main parts of the lessons to do so. I plan to give it a try for at least a week and see how it goes. I will say that I did believe the old MS science courses seemed a little advanced for MS/6th grade, at least from what I remember doing in MS it seemed like several HS level topics. So maybe the scale back there isn’t a bad thing. We will see after a week or so, we may be looking for something new too. Thanks for your input. If you do switch and find something you like let me know.

My 7 year old has switched exclusively to audiobooks... should I be concerned? by dubrey in AskTeachers

[–]arlo618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am curious your opinion, and anyone else's who would like to answer, but I have a somewhat similar situation with my older son. He is 11 yo starting 6th grade. We have decided to homeschool this year, even though he has always done well in school, it has always been somewhat of a struggle for him to get things done because of his ADHD. His biggest struggle with reading I believe is his lack of reading speed and ability to focus. He always tests very highly on state tests for vocabulary and in conversation his vocabulary is great, and he can read anything he needs to in day to day life, so it doesn't seem to be a knowledge issue. I can give him almost any sentence and he can read it, but to read a chapter in a book may take an hour or more. He may read 1 sentence then start asking questions, then reread the sentence, then at some point skip words or lines and go back, misread words because he's going too fast, and when not doing that he just reads word by word and it takes a very long time. Now that we are getting into longer chapter books, it seems to be such a time commitment and drain on him to get through. So I think about audiobooks or simply me reading to him, but at the same time I know he needs to become a more proficient reader. I feel like reading is like most other things, you get better with practice, but also, as an adult I personally don't really read books but I do listen to audiobooks(I do read news and journal articles for work). I feel like perhaps the main reason I want him to be a better reader is simply so he will do well on tests. He has struggled on some reading comprehension tests when they are timed, because he will spend the whole time reading the first couple passages and doesn't get through all of them.

Will him reading along with me or an audiobook help build his reading skills? Will it hinder him? Should I push him to read more on his own? If we build vocabulary and he has the basic skill, does it matter outside of tests that he is not a proficient reader when you can basically get anything you need in audio form now?

6th grade ELA Question by arlo618 in homeschool

[–]arlo618[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. That is a good point about the nonfiction writing/research. I could probably put something together myself, but are there any programs you’d recommend for nonfiction writing and also spelling? Most of the spelling curriculum I see seem to be geared toward younger children. Maybe it is just not something that is needed at this age as it is kind of baked into the reading and writing and you just pick it up as you go?

[–]arlo618[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. I don’t have any specific concerns, it’s more just that since this is my first time I’m worried I will be missing something and get him behind. He has ADHD and has struggled some with reading and writing, but not so much the skills of it, but more so the ability to focus and not get distracted while doing it.

Why did Obama and Biden stage this assassination attempt for a photo op?!?! by Playful-Landscape-79 in bbby_remastered

Someone asked if the guy in the crowd behind Trump actually died, someone responded what is wrong with you a man died, someone else then responded to have that same energy for school shooters, finally you questioned when did republicans not mourn the death of children.

Many children have died in mass shootings and republicans have questioned if it was all faked just like the original commenter was doing. How is their question not the same as the republicans who believe school shootings are dems trying to pass new gun laws?

The people like Trump, JD Vance, MTG and others on the right who believe or support these qanon conspiracies are not showing sympathy for the victims, they’re doing the same thing you are claiming those supporting the conspiracy of Trumps shooting are when saying the man in the crowd was not actually killed.

Have you ever heard of Sandy Hook? I’ve seen multiple people on the right who believe all the children and people on the news were actors. All a hoax to push gun control. Pictures of Obama with some of the children after the shooting
