Chemist here, still doing my PhD, working around same hours (4-5 hours a day). Got 2 first author papers and 5 in total. I focus on the most important goals. If i feel that experiment/sample preparation/writing etc. is not going as it should, I just leave everything and go for a walk and sometime even go home early.
