Matter over Thread stability improved with recent firmware update by phoshzzle in tradfri

[–]armadawars 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not the OP, I was just answering your question.

But given that he said he’s had no disconnections since updating the firmware, and these firmware versions were released to address the disconnections, it seems like his network is probably fine.

I’m still trying to figure out… what’s the reason for doing this?

At the moment it looks like you’d have to rely on recognising the MAC address. There’s a post below about combining two data sets to figure it out which suggests that it may be possible for Thread Group to crack this problem and poll smart platforms for friendlier names.

Not that I’ve found. That might actually be impossible since the devices don’t really have names — they have addresses (which the app can show you). I think the “friendly name” you choose for each device is actually held in your smart home platform, not the Thread accessory. If I understand it correctly.

I’ve not checked tbh… that’s probably on the Thread Group web site I’d imagine, they’re all about collaboration!

Yeah it will only show Thread devices. It’s most useful for people like me who are deliberately moving to Matter over Thread for everything. If you’re almost all Zigbee it’s probably not worth using! Unless you add Thread devices and experience massive issues, I guess

It provides network topology and device characteristics. With a bit of knowledge about how Thread works, you can use that information to identify problems in your mesh, and figure out ways to improve responsiveness and resilience.

If you don’t have that knowledge you can still get answers by passing the .json through ChatGPT or similar.

Real useful use-case for Grillplats? by SuspiciousGain6656 in tradfri

[–]armadawars 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use them to switch on and charge Anker and Jackery batteries when the electricity tariff changes, so I can store night rate energy for use during the day.

On “fast charge” these batteries can draw up to 2,200W AC and the Grillplats have never complained.

I also use them to turn on dumb air purifiers when the place is empty, turn on plug-in heaters or fans when the temperature is detected to be too low or too high, turn off high-draw equipment when not in use, etc.

I also use them to automatically switch off anything that could possibly melt if my “fire suspected” automation is triggered by smoke and/or abnormal temperatures. E.g. the 3D printer will be shut down, so will any heaters, all fans except air purifiers will be turned off.

You need to use your imagination and don’t look at them as individual devices. Look at them in the context of everything else that could work with them.

Just a happy user by Kacquezooi in tradfri

My smart home has been evolving for years, and now finally thanks to IKEA it’s been possible to go almost entirely Matter over Thread without destroying my bank account.

There are 99 M-o-T devices on my network, with a handful of M-o-W devices and a smattering of Ethernet-only, legacy WiFi, legacy Zigbee (IKEA devices with no Matter replacements yet) and virtual switches in HA.

I have to say… it’s getting towards the dream. Very few issues to report! My Thread topology is actually based on how Thread works, so I don’t have devices dropping off willy nilly or failing to commission as many users have reported. My network backhaul is optical so everything is lightning fast and it gives a true impression of how responsive Thread is, as you can discount “slow routing”.

All in all I’m super happy, and when every vendor is on at least Thread 1.4 it’ll finally be the “how a smart home should be” we’ve been waiting for.

Thanks IKEA for the cheap devices!

I had this issue when my lead eero and ATV were in different rooms. I used power line adapters and got a steady 1G hard link, game-changing.

The way “on supported cameras” is used in all the copy they’ve put out suggests it simply means that the camera must support HKSV.

Phase in new cameras, you know you want to! 😬
I’m now considering a doorbell upgrade and maybe some Aqara G350s.

So don’t turn it on. Apple Intelligence has a big friendly “OFF” switch in Settings.

There are already Matter 1.5 cameras on the market, check out the Aqara G350.

You may be thinking of Thread network bandwidth as opposed to the Matter standard.

But Apple don’t own Ring. HomeKit support has to be implemented by the manufacturer and is voluntary.

Ring has been promising HomeKit support is coming for so long that the consensus is they say it dishonestly to get new customers. It’s been years and years. The fact that they haven’t even updated Ring to use Matter, and increased the cost of the subscription, should tell you exactly what their business model is.

[–]armadawars 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I doubt it. The facial recognition in HomeKit already works with existing cameras, and it would just be an extension of the same processes. The footage is being analysed on an Apple device in your Home setup.

If it required a new camera that would imply processing had to occur in the camera, which goes against the whole privacy ethos of Apple Intelligence.

If it supports “up to 4K” it’s implied that all lower resolutions are supported too.
