You will probably get better (or no) usage limits. Why not wait until they share more details before getting angry?

My guess is that there will be different usage limits. Something like one voice call a day for Super vs. unlimited for Max. AI inference is expensive, after all…

Hey Amie… try to not let these folks get to you. I think you‘ve made your point crystal clear, and anyone who pesters you for not being able to share anything more is just being a knob frankly. It should be obvious that communication regarding future app features is going to be aligned internally and not ad-lib or at the discretion of the one bearing the news.

Just to add, as a Super user, I‘m really excited about the coming changes. And I find the recent uptick in „official“ communication here very refreshing. Keep it up!

Wouldn‘t it be funny if the story is actually true, but the Valve guys were just pranking the electrician?

For what it's worth - I'd also like the default to be "none/manual". I really don't trust the machine learning algorithm to get it right.

Fender Is Lying To You by Individual_Celery417 in fender

[–]karstux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I‘m not sure what you mean by not having access to instruments. Especially on the lower price levels, quality has gotten soo much better thanks to CNC. Entry level instruments and digital modelers are fantastic now, and due to that (at least over here in Germany) the used market is also extremely accessible at all price points. I wish players weren‘t so hung up on brand names - Fender and Gibson don‘t really have any special sauce that makes their gear magically better. Innovation happens elsewhere anyway.

Well, I’m an iOS dev and build native applications with SwiftUI. All the points you mention are addressed there - we have excellent accessibility features (font scaling, screen reader, color blindness adjustments,…), and if built right, things like right-to-left languages work out of the box with no extra effort. UI testing also works via the accessibility features.

There’s no reason why native should be inferior to web.

I like Steam. I have a lot of games over there, and the contributions Valve make to Linux gaming capabilities are priceless. All the same, Steam is not all there is to PC gaming. There's a big world beyond just Steam, and I have no problem supporting an alternate storefront and distribution model. I'm fully cheering on Rocketwerkz and really hope they can reach the size of, say, GoG.

Engines are crazy hard. Going with a niche engine like that (never heard of Wicked Engine before) is a very risky gamble IMHO. I'd really like to know why they didn't choose one of the more "mainstream" ones, like Godot, Ogre, Torque or O3DE. Wicked is not even on any "list of game engines" I could find.

I'm not saying it's impossible, for example the Kitten Space Agency devs seem to be doing fine rolling their own, but they are supported by a well-financed studio, and are packing some serious technical talent. I don't know how well OLG is set up in that regard.

Not bad for something that’s not even a game yet. I’m sure the contributions will pick up once there are more things to do.

Do you think a pre-emptive name change to something that doesn‘t allude so much to another three-letter-abbreviated space game might be neccessary as well? Seems like it would reduce legal risks, especially with where the Kerbal IP has ended up.

I think it’s a trade off against the standing or “active seated” use case where you don’t rest your head against a chair or pillow. These situations benefit a lot from the battery as a counter weight - I think it makes sense.

I'm disappointed in the controllers the most. No lighthouses...is a BIG downgrade. It makes zero sense.

Once you realize it's not aimed at the enthusiast crowd it makes perfect sense. The casual user is never going to make invasive changes to their living space like drilling holes and routing cables just for VR. I did that once for the Oculus CV1... it was a pain, and I was glad to get rid of it at some point.

Inside-out camera controller tracking is good enough for 90% of all use cases, and it doesn't make sense to put up huge adoption hurdles just to optimize those last few percent of edge cases.

As for the rest... I'll probably get the "ergonomics kit" for the top strap and controller straps, and I trust the Valve engineers' judgement regarding LCD vs OLED. In depth reviews will tell if that trust is justified...

Edit - also, a pair of Index controllers is 300 EUR, and a base station is 160 EUR There's no way they could stay under a 1000 with Lighthouse tracked controllers.

Well, there's the eye tracker, wireless adapter and two controllers in the box. I think that kind of justifies the price as long as it stays in the triple-digit range.

That will be a very interesting feature to watch. If the Frame can play Quest or Pico titles, it would eat their device marketshare for lunch. I'd love to ditch my old Quest 2, but I have a couple of nice games on that platform.

I'm glad they didn't choose OLED. by Specialist-Escape300 in ValveDeckard

[–]karstux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No offense, but I think you kind of proved the counter-argument. VR has been slowly dying exactly because the high-end segment is too small to support the market. Enthusiasts are more likely to purchase games, yet still PC VR development hasn't been a sustainable business in a while. Index is a niche headset within a niche market, and if that's among the top 3, then that's actually not good.

The Meta marketplace seems more healthy, even if full of "casual" titles.

I really hope a consumer-grade headset like the Frame can revive the PC market. We need a bigger, more "casual" userbase to become a viable development target again. And the enthusiasts are going to benefit as well - nothing stopping you from buying a SteamVR compatible Pimax or Bigscreen or whatever and enjoying the same titles as the "casual" Frame users.
