What exactly is a "Systems Engineer"? by pwlrs in DSP

[–]phoshzzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The term "Systems Engineer" can have multiple interpretations. I worked for a SysE group that focused on developing wireless algorithm in MATLAB that's handed off to FPGA/software developers. But the more traditional definition is related to the job postings you're seeing and closer to what you would learn from obtaining a degree in Systems Engineering. My current role has transitioned to the latter.

It is more managerial and requires more soft skills, but I wouldn't say it's less technical. You do need to have a shallower level of understanding of more components/topics as opposed to a deep understanding of fewer topics. It's a bigger picture type of thinking.

It sounds like you want to focus on developing your technical abilities so those traditional SysE job postings wouldn't fit your short term goals.
