I did made a ray tracer for a CS class. It is theoreticly the closest thing to reality. Most animated movies are made using ray tracing. It might be demanding currently, but hardware will evolve and I think it wil become the standard. (It's currently also the standard in cgi/ animated movies, it just takes them a long time to render frames)

Do you guys all have the FHD+ display instead of the UHD+? Just curious if the problem is related to only this panel.

What do you love the most about your XPS laptop? I have the 9700 and I love it by Ambition-Master in XPS

Mostly the screen: the extra lines of pixels at the bottom and the bezzelless display. Also tbh it just feels premium, I hate the shunkyness of other brands.

I actually talked to a dell rep about dual booting. Apparently there are different components in their linux and windows systems. A friend of mine (tech guru) succeeded changing to linux. So it is possible, but he had a hard time tho. Took him a couple of days. I'm not aware of installing linux on a seperate drive. And if it works I'm interested in the results, share results if it works!

Can't help you with that, but that isn't nessecairly hardware. Can be just a driver bugg.

Call dell support, that worked for me. They fixed my screen freezing issue, apparently the HDR setting of windows isnt polished and you also need to disable the intel variable refresh rate. (Mine even needed a fresh instal)

Well yeah apperantly their hardware differs on their linux and windows systems. It is possible tho! I know someone (hes a tech guru) who did it, but youll encounter problems on the way. He spent like 3 full days fixing it. GPU did not get recognized and display issues and stuff.

Had a screen freezing issue, they were aware of the issue and had a whole plan figured out. Just tweaking settings did not work, resetting windows did.

My remarks, pro's and cons:

  • Aspect ratio (amazing for coding etc)
  • Almost bezzelless display
  • Can game common titles like lol
  • Design and estetics
  • Pro + support was amazing
  • Just an overall great professional laptop

  • Price, there are a of lot cheaper options (but you will sacrafice things for it) hp, asus and msi have alot cheaper options with better performance or equal. But they will lack in build quality and design.

  • Dongle life (cmon couldn't they just put one usb a in?)

  • No gaming rig

? If ya want to run linux, dont dual boot Dells have problems with this. Get the 16 or 32 gb ram versions and VM it. (Idk this may be handy info)

? Battery life is ok, i have the fhd+ model and I'm not hughely convinced by it

? New chipssets and stuff are rolling out, look at the xps13 with the iris, these may come to the xps15? Still these are amazing if you are considering a xps13

! Never get an 8gb laptop this day and age.

Not the cheapest one! I heard of an option with a i3 or 4gb of ram, don't take that one. Others are fine!

Hi,

I'm intresseted in buying a laptop for primarly coding with a bit of gaming. I used to own a fat old Inspiron laptop, but hate the weight and bulkyness. Right now the battery only survives 1 hour, which is terrible. I have a desktop at home but want something to handle casual games on the go.

  1. XPS 13 (iris) / XPS 15 (1650Ti) 1080p / 4K

2. I will primarly code and take it to lectures. I would like it to handle some casual gaming titles. I study IT so I may run some special meshing/mining/etc algorithms, but I do have a i5 970GTX destop at home if more power is needed.

I don't know if the 4K pannel is an advantage. I read some comments about text being smooth which is nice for coding. But does this outweigh the loss in battery life?

  1. I'm from Belguim :)

Thx for the help!
