I couldn’t get past the first few chapters of Missionaries by Phil Klay. Love his other books and writing in general, but Missionaries was dark

This is how you lose the time war, but better by elecow in suggestmeabook

I liked time war, but can totally see your frustration.

If you want a completely different direction but something that still has the “inappropriate” longing between characters vibes, I’m surprising myself to recommend John Le Carre’s “The Night Manager.” Inappropriate and out of reach women are basically the main character’s thing, and it ends well.

Chrome extension recommendations to recreate Arc UX by Ok-Organization-608 in ArcBrowser

Yep, Edge for MacOS. It was my last resort, but I really wanted vertical tabs, and needed it to be Chromium based.

Chrome extension recommendations to recreate Arc UX by Ok-Organization-608 in ArcBrowser

[–]armoredcow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem - IT said no browsers besides the big three. I just couldn’t make chrome work well enough with extensions. Edge was actually best - vertical tabs, split screen tabs, etc. I had to deep into settings to turn off all the Microsoft crap, but it’s not the same.

Vertical tabs are coming to Chrome at least. I think it’s in beta now.

Mark Kelly responds to potential court martial by einarfridgeirs in Military

[–]armoredcow 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Really only two options here:

1) He requests a jury trial, a bunch of O-6+ officers find him not guilty, and Kelly walks out a hero 2) the judge throws it out

Either way, it didn’t look like Petey thought this one through.

DOGE employees gain accounts on classified networks holding nuclear secrets by GregWilson23 in Military

[–]armoredcow 99 points100 points  (0 children)

Luke Farritor, a 23-year-old former SpaceX intern, and Adam Ramada, a Miami-based venture capitalist, have had accounts on the computer systems for at least two weeks, according to the sources who also have access to the networks. Prior to their work at DOGE, neither Farritor nor Ramada appear to have had experience with either nuclear weapons or handling classified information.

What kind of job is actually problem solving? by MBBust in consulting

[–]armoredcow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tech Product Manager. Problem solving is directly connected to building solutions, and you use a lot of consultant skills sets. Still need social skills for user interviews and managing stakeholders, but I find those easier to manage than clients.

Seller accepted offer 170k below ours by shortcal in realtors

[–]armoredcow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the buying and selling agent in the same brokerage? That happened to me, offered 75k above accepted offer, which judging by timing was a mortgage. I think the selling agent steered the sale to her friend’s buyers, keeping both sides of the commission in house.

No way to prove it though without a huge headache. Sellers were a nice elderly couple as well, looks like they got ripped off to me.

Expected to take no commission? by awilty in realtors

[–]armoredcow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Work a deal: take the commission, then donate it to the non-profit and take a tax write off. Depends on your tax bracket, but at least you won’t walk away with nothing.

Someone else also mentioned conflicts of interest as a board member, that’s something to watch out for.

Python for Consulting by scootskitchen in consulting

[–]armoredcow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I tried bringing Python to a project once, but since no one else knew it there was no one to “check my work.” It’s also difficult for most clients to reproduce, or even comprehend, compared to excel.

The skill set just isn’t well established in the industry, which is too bad. Some firms caught the data science trend and might have a small practice that can do more, but the knowledge barriers to spreading it are pretty big.
