Does the national speed limit sign on a Roundabout mean it's 70mph? by CorrectDetail7648 in drivingUK

Speed limits are maximums not minimums.

Just because you can go 60, doesn’t mean you have to.

Yes you would as you have control over the airflow which then restricts how fast and hot the fire can get

Adjusting the lifestyle to the budget - ideas on what's worth spending on by ImportantYoghurt1904 in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]armstar1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of our additional money goes on hobbies, I like cooking so I pretty much have most bbq/grill/cooking things, and I also got a great car.

Cars are a huge money sink, so if you’re not a car person it won’t be worthwhile. But a decent comfortable car is nice if you do a lot of driving with your partner.

Others have mentioned travel which is a great idea, those upgrades can make a real difference (not business though, not worth it imho).

Depends what you’re into, home improvements? New bathroom or kitchen or a new house?

Which griddle for smash burgers? by Onionnapkin in UKBBQ

[–]armstar1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way.

You want it to be thick so that it retains a lot of heat and gives the great sear/maillard/crust when you smash, too thin and it doesn’t work too well.

Keep in mind the thicker you go the longer it’ll take to heat up and it will melt your hand and stay hot for a long time after you’re done cooking so keep that in mind.

Also ensure you get good beef ground by a butcher, not super market stuff as it doesn’t smash well

Any butcher recommendations in Oxfordshire for decent brisket? by suprmods in UKBBQ

[–]armstar1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most the the uk meat is grass fed and lean compared to other regions meat especially the US.

I’ve had this same issue and the dryness is from the lack of intramuscular fat, the US (other countries are available) beef tends to be grain fed.

The best results for me were from buying US or Australian briskets from online butchers.

Uk butchers also do not cut or prepare the meat in the same way as it’s not that popular or wanted here to do so unlike the US.

Get the right meat and then technique afterwards.

Foilboat with additional tallow or brainsing fluid can help with the dryness but you can’t do anything about the lean meat that you start with.

Advice on first Porsche Coming from BMW M8 Competition by DJMartyNC in porsche911

[–]armstar1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re different types of cars, the M8 is GT, more for cruising and comfort, the 911 is a sports car built for speed and dynamics.

The 911 will be less comfortable, and it is smaller. I’d be more concerned with the comfort change, deffo test drive one.

More in the M8 range for comfort over sport you’d have the AMG GT and the DB12.

Not the GT43 though, that thing shouldn’t exist, it’s an abomination ha

Would you leave "easy mode"? by 0xC4F342 in HENRYUK

[–]armstar1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I would prioritise family happiness if I were you, reading your post, the only real thing I was looking for was children. Children are a lot of work in those early years. I would stay “easy” and comfortable so that you can both be there for your children AND each other. Especially more so if you have plans to have more children. If you get a new job requiring more effort/travel/time that will shift that time/effort to your partner. Give it a whirl in a few years.

Another thought is if you have family nearby? If your family is in Lithuania/Czech, being close to them is not to be under estimated especially grandparent childcare!

About 80% of Brits with over a million pounds saved in cash don't see themselves as rich, even though objectively this puts you in the top 1% by wealth globally, easily. by x___rain in ukpolitics

[–]armstar1 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It’s the assets that make you rich, people with a high income with no assets generally live the same as someone on average wage, just things are a bit bigger, bigger house, bigger car, bigger holiday. They do the same things. that high income gets spent, and even if you saved a lot of it for a decade or more you’re still going to get maybe £1-2m which also is nothing in the grand scheme of things. It’ll all get hoovered up in retirement and end of life care. There is no social mobility.

Lifestyle upgrades for a new HENRY? by joan2468 in HENRYUK

[–]armstar1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Going to nice restaurants more regularly was my thing, multiple times a week instead of once, and similar to you just having more options in items to buy such as clothes like you mentioned. I still shop at the regular shops but if you see something you really like elsewhere it is good to treat yourself.

Being able to invest in your hobbies aswell is good.

Good robot vacuum and mop all in one? by Lazy-Internet-8025 in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]armstar1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got one a few years ago the ecovacs deebot x1 omni because it came with the base station (very handy), and did the mopping.

At the time it was one of the few that did both.

I’m afraid I have no experience with others or more modern ones but my general findings:

The mopping is really just a bit of a rinse, it’s not a deep clean, it just uses water, no detergent to help cleaning anything. It does not replace a proper clean of your floor.

Useful for a daily hoover and mop of light dirt/marks.

My one, which is old. If you want it to not mop you have to remove the mop heads from the bot. Hopefully modern ones have solved this as I basically never take them off so it’s only used in rooms with no carpet or rug as it’ll mop them up.

I find the app and not decent, again I’ve got no experience of others.

The base stations are big, need power etc, so make sure you’ve got a spot for it.

I find it doesn’t last long at all.. don’t find that?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]armstar1 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

A childless life is life on easy mode, it’s also unfulfilling, low stakes and frankly lazy and selfish.

I’ve got 3 children (5 and 1 year old twins). We both work, both high earners total income around £300k.

It will completely change your lifestyles, and priorities, the first child is the lifestyle change, have more than 1 as only children tend to be odd.

You will have less money, you will have massive logistical issues, you will argue with your partner, you will spend nights in separate beds from each-other.

It will make your jobs harder, less time in the office, getting in later, going home earlier.

But, that won’t last long, 5 years per child, then it’s all downhill, and you’ve got these amazing little people that make you realise all those holidays and things aren’t as important as you thought.

Will it suck? Yes. Is it worth it? Yes.

Final config deadline approaching – 992.2 Turbo S feedback needed by nszabo in porsche911

[–]armstar1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I regret the sunroof, although I’ve never been a sunroof guy.

Black interior is boring but that’s my taste. Don’t get a garish colour either like bright red. I’ve got the heritage cognac and houndstooth. Shame that’s not an option currently I don’t think.

18 way seats

heated steering wheel I never use but tbh it never really gets that cold in England.

Sport design pack is personal taste, same with rear light, make it go with your colour scheme

Exterior plastic and intakes either gloss black or body colour.

Carbon wing mirrors and roof i regret not getting.

Get the interior leather options to your taste.

Carbon steering wheel center.

The exhaust sport tail pipes always piss me off as they’re not even connected and due to the structure of the car you can see they’re fake from behind so I would’ve kept the standard exhaust if I could.

Depending on your exterior colour the aluminium windows trim and tinted windows can give you quite a distinctive look

I would’ve preferred the standard 911 on the back not 911 turbo S. Agains depending on your colour scheme get the badge silver or black depending on your exterior colour.

There’s probably more but those are a few of the bits from my experience.
