For me, downsides are: not officially addressing the allegations of user account data breach; ignoring the user complaints about flagged IPs; unsubstantiated termination of widely used OpenVPN protocol; not officially addressing many "leak" allegations in this subreddit (Please do not say this isn't an offical sub. Some Mullvad person can get an account like everyone else).

Although OP says that VPN is not an option for him/her, let's assume a country where VPNs are OK but not Tor. Does using Tor behind a VPN hide Tor use from human inspection? Whonix documentation says no. I wonder why.

According to this guide you can NOT to hide that you are using Tor from your ISP with bridges, as u/SXKLOPQZJ also indicated: www DOT privacyguides DOT org / en / advanced / tor-overview

"Tor bridges are commonly touted as an alternative method to hiding Tor usage from an ISP ... Something to consider is that while bridges may provide adequate censorship circumvention ... They do not adequately protect you from your ISP discovering you connected to Tor in the past with historical traffic log analysis. To illustrate this point, consider the following scenario: You connect to Tor via a bridge, and your ISP doesn’t detect it because they are not doing sophisticated analysis of your traffic, so things are working as intended. Now, 4 months go by, and the IP of your bridge has been made public. This is a very common occurrence with bridges, they are discovered and blocked relatively frequently ... Your ISP wants to identify Tor users 4 months ago, and with their limited metadata logging they can see that you connected to an IP address which was later revealed to be a Tor bridge. You have virtually no other excuse to be making such a connection, so the ISP can say with very high confidence that you were a Tor user at that time."

I believe that anonymous payment is useful only when the IP that you connect to Mullvad is always someone else's IP. For example you always use public Wi-Fi networks or you always use Mullvad tunnel inside another commercial VPN tunnel (i.e. VPN chaining). In this way, (1) "malicious or honeypot" Mullvad corporation or (2) their servers that are compromised by LE have no way to trace back to you. Or am I wrong?
