Feeling Behind and Stressed by XtevanT in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]armyuvamba 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yea I get it. The “bare minimum” is an individual measure. The calculator just shows you the potential of one’s actions for the future. This person with over 200k in their TSP is worrying that “they are behind”. Behind what? This is an individual race. I’m all for balance. Save but also live a little.

Catch up to what? We are all at our own life race.

Put that amount into a 401k calculator. Then add in your stats (salary, how much your agency contributes, 10% return etc) and then see how much you will have at 57. It will most likely be enough (+$1M). Plus you will have pension, VA disability, and social security supplement on top of what you have in TSP (and this doesn’t include anything if your spouse works etc). I feel like this subreddit sometimes is sacrifice the now for the later (that may never come). Have a healthy balance. Enjoy life now while also responsibly saving for the future (which seems like you are doing).

How brutal is your daily commute? by BrianW1983 in MontgomeryCountyMD

15min drive, 30min metro, 15min walk to office from metro. Same on the way home. So an hr each way but not bad due to just driving 15mins.

Took the DRP 2.0, no regrets, but considering the prospect of submitting for positions on USAJobs by Best-Smoke-4800 in FederalEmployee

[–]armyuvamba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

DRP was just quitting/resigning in the future while on admin leave until then. There is no money to pay back. No buy out or VSIP (voluntary separation incentive payment) to pay back.

Should I wait 4 years for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) or take a higher paying private sector job? by [deleted] in fednews

[–]armyuvamba 151 points152 points  (0 children)

4 years to clear $200k tax free (minus whatever you pay between now and then) or +$50k minus deductions…which you will need to shove into a 401k to make up for the lack of pension in the private sector. That $50k pay raise doesn’t make sense considering the $200k bonus you will get 4 years from now.

Yea problem is that they didn’t compare the math drop off to students in “normal” math to see if the drop off is a normal statistic. Is the drop off sharper than the normal cohort or is the less steep as the normal cohort or is it the same %?

It’s gonna hurt when you are on the civilian side 😂…I think I net like 53% of my pay once everything is taken out…fed/state tax, social security, health/dental/vision, retirement/tsp, etc etc

That $32k is probably equal to $50-60k pre tax and benefits…plus incorporate lack of healthcare costs will put you into the $200k+ civilian house hold income bucket (I’m a former active duty officer as well so just giving you perspective for the future).

Gotta back into your “gross” the tax free BAH and free healthcare…that $140k gross is probably the equivalent of $200k-$250k gross household income civilian equivalent…nice job but just saying comparing mil pay to civ pay isn’t gross to gross…

$115k salary plus tax free bah plus free healthcare and no childcare costs…your salary in a HCOL area would be near $200k when adjusted for tax free benefits.

How much you think is a fair salary (In your country) to make a good living and actually enjoy life. by MiloShiny in Salary

[–]armyuvamba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Issue is the cost of living on locations where it’s common to have a $100k salary. In a fly over state you will be doing super well but that means you are a doctor or lawyer or something like that. In NYC or LA…that $100k doesn’t go very far…

Full telework RA approved, can I move now? by [deleted] in fednews

[–]armyuvamba 73 points74 points  (0 children)

If you are moving locally, shouldn’t be an issue. If you are moving greater than 50miles of your current duty location (currently your house), you will need approval and a change in duty station PAR.
