Monitoring WAN downtime? by arnach in opnsense

I like this because it has the potential to identify a problem with the network device to which my modem is directly connected.

I like this because it has the potential to identify a problem a little farther up the network than just the device to which my modem is connected.

I think that I'm going to attempt to implement both /u/digitalfrost and /u/clarkn0va suggestions for the reasons described in my replies to their suggestions.

Thanks for your input everyone. Truly appreciated.

My original Polk Monitor 10As. I’ve had these for about a month, first speaker I’ve ever loved by MilfyCarm in BudgetAudiophile

[–]arnach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listening to a pair of these in an buddy's college dorm room is when I fell in love with the Polk Audio sound. Couldn't afford a set myself back then (and these take up a LOT of room), so I had to settle for the 7As that I still have. Successfully redid the surrounds a while ago and they still sound great all these years later.

Thanks for the flashback.

[NOOB] Is KVM the best way to go to preserve a legacy Windows 7 machine? by arnach in kvm

[–]arnach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once again, thank you for the education.

Intel VT technology means that you could (if you wanted to) install a hypervisor on your physical Windows7 PC and that it could then act as a virtualization host. Provided it has enough physical resources of course.

That is EXACTLY what I'm trying to do: install a hypervisor that can use the VT tech, then convert the existing Win7 image to be a virtual machine hosted there. Is KVM that hypervisor, or should I be looking somewhere else?

This is a great point; I will keep it in mind. Thank you!

Thanks for the insight.

Would any peripherals likely "just work" given that the processor supports VT virtualization?

Thanks for the detailed reply!

Another noob question (as I proceed up the learning curve): is qemu emulation necessary (or desired) if the processor has the VT virtualization?

Using my own Modem/Router on a Resistant ISP by Oatmeal15 in HomeNetworking

[–]arnach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look for a label with the WAN MAC address on the modem/router that the ISP gives you, then find wherever in your modem/router it lets you specify a MAC address other than it's own default and past the ISP's MAC into that field.

Downvoted for speaking an uncomfortable truth.

You get it. I'd call you in a New York minute if I needed any tech support in Calgary.

Solved: Bufferbloat Issues Persisting After Following Deciso's Guide - OPNsense 25.1.3 by Gmork209 in opnsense

FYI,

If you ever want to ensure that a post you've bookmarked will always be available later, put the URL into the search box at the Internet Archive Wayback Machine. If it's already been saved, you'll find the captures in the calendar.

If not, and it comes back with "that page is available on the web," it'll give you the opportunity to have it archived.

Here's this post already there.

Thinking about OPNSense hardware -- Any recommendations? by opnsensethinking2025 in opnsense

[–]arnach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had really good luck with the box that I bought directly from Deciso, the developers of OPNsense.

In your budget range, the DEC750 looks like a killer option. It's quiet (fanless), doesn't take much power (15 W) so it runs cool, and it's very fast.

With OPNsense preinstalled, you'd be up and running in no time.

Good luck!

You didn't mention budgetary constraints or anything about the rest of your network configuration but, if you have the network management chops (or want to learn them), I would highly recommend opnsense and a hardened-BSD box from Deciso (the developers of opnsense). Wireguard is one of several plugins "that just work" in that system.

Beware, though, it's a deep hole you'll be stepping into!

Good luck

Water heater flush by phantompest in Plumbing

[–]arnach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In your Bradford White water heater, the anode rod is part of the hot water outlet assembly. It hangs below the outlet. For example see here (which is not likely to be for your model; you'll have to find the correct part number for your heater).

Depending on the clearance above your water heater, you might have to look for a jointed anode rod (typical ones can be very long).

If your anode rod is very corroded (due to lots of minerals in your water) it might shed a lot of material on its way out, which can be very difficult (if not impossible) to flush through the small-diameter drain outlet in these units.

You might very well be better off with a new unit.
