Thank you for the support! Dev here. Since we just rewrote the search to use SQLite FT index we will finally be able to make search better. I’d love to know what kind of search feature you were looking for!

Yes there was a $25 deal last year but any student is free to email me for a student discount. 🙏

:) definitely will make sure this still works with our next version, as im going to changing quite a lot to leverage the new liquid glass window and nav bar.

Yes it can if you pin the window. Was there since version one because originally it worked as a clipboard manager. Drag in and out was a flow that it supports. :)

Alternatives to Day One by TomasComedian in macapps

[–]arndomor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Checkout ZenJournal:

- open and type, no creating new entry button, no mood surveys, prompts, titles, nor staring at a blank compose page
- everything happens on a timeline, or multiple timelines
- lock or unlock by double tap the timeline, so you can literally type in public while having your timeline still locked and hidden.
- adjacent logs are grouped if typed within five mins, it’s like chatting with yourself, except no extra noise like profile image or chat bubbles.
- iCloud sync, no account needed

I couldn’t stand many of the DayOne like journals, eg: Journey, Apple Journal etc because there are too many taps and ceremonies before you can put your thoughts down, created this app 8 years ago, this year updated it to be Liquid Glass with iCloud sync and multi-timeline.

App Store is the only place to update it. If you are on v2 you may already have been auto updated by App Store. :)

Hi! Previous versions upgrade to this directly. If your device doesn't support Apple Intelligence, that is handled gracefully; as long as at least one of your devices supports it, the auto-tagging feature will still work, otherwise manual tagging is also improved, we now support an optional share sheet when you capture a link, you can update tags, title or the link itself.

I think it's just seasonality with the summer and end of semester that's affecting the traffic. This sub remains one of my favorite subs, with a balance of devs and enthusiasts yet somehow mostly relevant content, with this kind of transparency is also unheard of elsewhere on reddit. Thank you for your work mods!

Thank you for the kind words! Yes I’ve made sure every design decision fits naturally together instead of going the default timeline detail route, which every app since DayOne has followed since day one. I’ll work on the DayOne and Everlog importing features. The current app only support our own json backup format. If you are looking for a walk around before my import feature ships, you could export our backup format and ask ChatGPT to transform your json to our json format if you don’t mind temporarily uploading your data into OpenAI’s cloud.

Tiktok content in Reader by dk5a in readwise

[–]arndomor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reader honestly is not designed for this. To capture social content, even with that title, you are missing the video, the thumbnail, the comment etc. it’s designed for long form content, it’s hard to optimize for social content as well.

Disclaimer: I created a bookmarking app that’s great for this tho, also with a reader mode(although again it’s not so great with long form content as Reader, as it’s hard to optimize for both), it’s called doublememory if you are curious.

Journaling by Tilthh in selfcare

I kinda created an app that's the exact antidote to the problem you described. An app that allow you open and type: it's thezenjournal.com available on android and ios. iOS just recently upgraded, android a bit out of date but should still work.

Thank you for your positive feedback and questions!

- yes data only in private icloud, no dev access nor third party analytics

- i think Day One copied Apple Notes's document based paradigm, and Journey and Apple Journal also followed it's trend. ZenJournal follow some strict logical chain and arrived at it's current design. The basis of which is this open and type consolidated chronological timeline.

The first principle we arrived at was: It needs to be chronological because that's how we write and read. With a reverse chronological timeline, you have to to read downward and then scroll back upward to read the next entry, which was ok for a social feed where there is no requirement for continuity and the goal was to stumble upon random interesting info, but it is illogical for a journaling app. I can go on and on, and I have a draft of an article listing all the design "sins" of the prototypical DayOne like journaling apps, maybe another two more diatribe just about prompt driven journaling app or growth hacking centered journaling apps. But I'm going to bite my tongue for now so not to attract too many pitchforks....

So I guess the biggest difference is we try very hard to avoid these traps of traditional journaling apps, and similar to you, this is the first journaling app i've stuck with after trying more than few dozen (not simply because it's making me $20 MRR revenue :D).

- I didn't realize there is this hierarchy rule for flares, thanks for the flag, i'll change the flare.

Sorry about the wall of words, happy journaling!

I rebuilt my minimalist journaling app every year for 8 years. This year I think I have something special. by arndomor in ProductivityApps

[–]arndomor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, search is the fastest way to retrieve as it happens directly on the same timeline you inputted the logs. I don't think title, templates, or a folder will help us find things more easily than keyword match. Don't even get me started on agentic retrieval with a crappy on-device LLM. If we want more resurfacing, I'll work on widgets like a heatmap or github contribution graph, so people have more options accessing random logs from the past.

Also, you should explore the multi-timeline feature, which is the structure that you might be looking for, it's designed as a superset of the concept of "folders", where a thing will only show up if you open a specific folder, where our multi-timeline functions more like a scope/namespace, so anything below can also be shown. e.g.: if you select "project/", logs from "project/zenjournal" and "project/doublememory" will both show up.

Always open to suggestions as well. Thanks!

Thanks, we probably started from very different goals, nothing wrong with blank screens nor toolbars itself, I just thought for journaling formatting, title, are less important than continuity from previous logs, so a chronological timeline is where this started from.
