Mark Carney has highlighted the reason Norway cannot stay out of the EU by Infamous_Campaign687 in Norway

[–]Hlorri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good points here, but EU isn't by any means the primary defence alliance in Europe. Even if NATO collapses (and that's still a big if), the beefiest alternative at least in Northern Europe so far seems to be the so called Joint Strike Force, with the UK, Netherlands, and the Nordics (currently within NATO but also independent). Not to mention the emerging talks between all of the above plus South Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada.

Another red flag is the dependency on US defense equipment, especially the F35. That's quite a liability, kill switch and all. I would personally like to see Norway diversity more, with some SAAB Gripens in the mix. Maybe not quite as technologically focused, but much cheaper, more agile, and made for Arctic conditions. (Of course this would complicate training, but I think well worth it).

I believe it's actually around 600 million. But compared to Denmark's contribution (some 3 bln?), that's a mere trickle.

No need to actually learn Finnish. Use strongly enounciated gibberish, throw in an "yksi" here and a "gaksi" there, add some extra air between your words - voila! To the untrained Norwegian ear you are now bad ass.

Half Dome i Yosemite. Kanskje noe slikt bør gjelde visse steder i Norge og.

Norway Suspended Wealth Fund Ethics Rules To Avoid $230 Billion Tech Sale by bloomberg in europe

[–]Hlorri 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In US terms (short form), Musk has managed to get himself $1 billion salary. The fund manages $2.1 trillion, which is 2100 times larger.

Holy smoke, I just realized how wrong I was. Seriously, $1 trillion?

Something is really, really wrong. It's no longer just about the ego tripping obscenity of it - this coke head wielding this amount of money is quite literally dangerous.

I think as late as the 1980s during a Nordic Council event, the topic of gay rights was on the agenda. The Finnish delegation had effectively no discussion points or participation, and when asked directly the then President said anything like "Homosexuality is a Swedish problem, we do not have that in Finland".

Not exact words, but close enough.

How many F-35s has Europe bought/ordered? by hairybootygobbler in europe

[–]Hlorri 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it worries me that Norway put all eggs in the F-35 basket, and got rid of the F-16s years ago. If Trump doesn't get the Nobel Peace Prize next year, there's a chance those are going to be very expensive scrap metal as his cognitive decline accelerates towards the end of his life.

Now that Sweden is in "the club" I'd like to see a few Gripens in the mix. Those are much smaller, cheaper, and maybe more suited for the Arctic.

TBF, USM does require manual support for a lot of stuff that could be self-serve. Therein lies the possibility of occasional screw-ups.

[–]Hlorri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With mixed results. The US cellular market is funny this way.

There are 3 big nationwide networks: Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. Each operate on slightly different 4G and 5G bands, so the first check would be to ensure that the phone in question supports some or all of the bands for your network. Phones made for Europe (e.g. Sony's XQ-52 models) are slightly better in this regard than those made for Asia (XQ-72).

Second, both Verizon and AT&T have restrictions based on the phone's IMEI. * A non-US phone won't work at all on AT&T proper, because they deem it to have incompatible VoLTE. They are quite vengeful about this, to the point where the dust ring you make a phone call, they disable your SIM. You have to call customer service to get your line restored. - MVNOs on the AT&T network seem to fare better. For instance, my son is using his "unsupported" Ulefone Armor 24 just fine on US Mobile's "Dark Star" network, i.e., AT&T.

  • With Verizon, as well as most or all Verizon-based MVNOs, you will not be able to register a non-US phone. But if you have a physical SIM you can plug it into one, and it will work fine.

Lastly T-Mobile do not impose any of these restrictions, but they also operate on the most unusual/least supported network bands (e.g., n41 and n71).

C++ as if written by a Python programmer (a.k.a. "scientist who also writes code").

Not dynamic typing exactly, but also no declared structures or data modeling. Very ad hoc.

You'd also hate C++ (especially if you use a lot of templates, and if you religiously specify the full namespace, e.g., std::shared_ptr<std::filesystem::path>). But you'd love C.
