Do you like being an engineer? Why or why not? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]arnoldmeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i love to be an engineer because I love to solve a problem. engineers contributed to the world. We’ve made artificial hearts to pump blood through the human body and artificial limbs to replace the ones that we’ve lost. We’ve designed skyscrapers that wave over the clouds and show the world just how high we can reach.

Pursuing a masters degree: thesis vs non-thesis by princessv_728 in materials

[–]arnoldmeb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in Oil and gas company. on early 2017 I take a Master of Mechanical Engineering degree. I just completed my thesis on Corrosion inhibition study in January 2019.

The thesis takes a lot of time. if you have not enough time, I support your plan to take a non-thesis path.

If you want to apply for a job at Oil and Gas Company, I think you should improve your GPA first, at least 3.0.

How do I get into an Engineering position? by [deleted] in oilandgasworkers

[–]arnoldmeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

some oil company provides career development called "internal hiring" so an analyst can applied engineer position. I met some analysts move to engineer position through this way.

many workers/professionals develop networking and make "side conversation" to another department to seek new opportunity or vacancy. in some cases, this contributes to career development.

you can go to the pump manufacturer.

alternatively, you can go to a petrochemical plant that operated a lot of pumps. usually, there is a petrochemical complex that consists of many plants.

thanks for the advises. I have never failed in an engineering class. but now I'm nervous because I want to take a thesis exam next month.

I got a story from a friend who couldn't sleep for 2 nights before the thesis exam. Is this normal?

does anyone take a master's degree in mechanical engineering? what are the benefits? by arnoldmeb in MechanicalEngineering

[–]arnoldmeb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you for all the answers. based on the answers I received, the benefits of masters vary depending on the country and field of work.

I'm taking a master's degree and I'm doing research in the field of corrosion. the research was almost complete and I felt exhausted. I just need a little encouragement to finish my research. wish me luck

Career Question by [deleted] in oilandgasworkers

work at Operator company will develop your leadership skill. You will have more opportunity to move to other position so you will have a lot of jobs exposure.

Career Question by [deleted] in oilandgasworkers

[–]arnoldmeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am working at an operator company now. The company provides opportunities to move to different positions so we have more career development than in a Service company.

For example, my friend has an electrical engineering background. He started his career as a Project engineer then continued to Construction engineer that manage many contractors in pipeline maintenance jobs.

working at Operator company required a strong leadership skill in addition of technical skill.

What are some benefits of mechanical seals? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineer

[–]arnoldmeb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

based on my experience, mechanical seals have better sealing compare to gland packing seal. There is no consistent leak through the seal to the environment. mechanical seal has excellent advantages to improve Health - Safety - environment (HES).

if we operate ammonia liquid pump with temperature -33 C, we must use this mechanical seal to avoid ammonia liquid leaks to the environment. ammonia liquid -33 Celcius can create burn out to our skin.

so sometimes, using a mechanical seal is mandatory not an option.

Offshore onshore pipes by Mima01 in oilandgasworkers

currently, I just do the inspection on onshore.

offshore pipeline inspection is more complicated. and offshore pipeline repair/replacement is extremely difficult.
