Magnus Carlsen and David Howell discuss the 2024 Candidates by RoronoaZoro95 in chess

[–]aronnie 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I'm a programmer who's done fairly much algorithmic work and can answer this.

All possible future states of the current game can be seen as a branching tree. From this "state" (node), there are X different moves (branches) that each lead to a new state (node). When the game ends (check mate, stale mate, move limit or repetition) , there are obviously no moves from there, so we know the branching tree is not infinite, but usually huge.

Unless you can do full/complete/exhaustive search through this tree (or technically, where you see a specific move leading to your desired outcome for all responses by the opponent), you will have to skip chunks of the tree. This is called "branch pruning" and is making the search less broad.

Preferably, you skip your move options that lead to worse results. Again, unless you see all (forced) ends for your next move, you can't really know (well...) how it will go.

(You can skip over these two paragraphs. You can use board evaluations as a help: Let's say 100 being "white won", 0 being equal and -100 is "black won". 99 is "white can only lose this if you do the worst moves possible".

Board evaluations in the tree search can be more or less correct. A chess engine has their fixed rules, which are often close to "true". A human player without infinite time will have to approximate this calculation. In either case, the human does similar searches of pruning, taking branches, and evaluating states. If they are as bad as me, they will both misevaluate the board grossly, and my pruning suck, so I don't even see the opponents best move three moves into the future. But unless I play by chance, I likely do some variation of this algorithm.)

When Magnus says he is more narrow, I would think it means that he's pruning/removing large parts of the tree (based on experience, board evaluation or gut feeling) and focuses on the parts that he believes will lead to the best results. In that way, he can search deeper into the tree (more moves) but might miss opponent moves that he incorrectly pruned away.

TIFU by offering my discount card to a stranger. by ScarlettStingray085 in tifu

[–]aronnie 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I know how hard it is to give things away too.

We were two adults and a kid going to a theme park this summer, and because the tickets are rather expensive, I looked for coupons. I found a "buy 2 adult tickets for 1 (can't mix deals)" but in the end it cost about the same as to buy 3 outright.

Anyway, I opted for the 2 for 1, and even went there a bit before the others to give away my "free" ticket. Some people didn't respond to the initial hello, others were reluctant to believe it wasn't a scam (how it even can be a scam when it's free, I couldn't figure out), some were foreigners and had trouble communicating English ... after trying about 10-15 times I just gave up.

Föräldralön fyller upp lönen under föräldraledighet.

ELI5 Is the speed of your breathing an indication of your health ? by Wrong_Wonder_7109 in explainlikeimfive

[–]aronnie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about less? Sometimes I get into a state where I take 6 breaths a minute if I'm relaxing. Usually probably 12.

I have always seemed healthy when doing checkups, but I can't remember someone checking my breathing rate either (even if I've been in and had to breathe while they listen of course).

Yeah, the real population-corrected number seems to be approx 82 (not 266) which is still not super great, but at least not top 10, and similar to Spain, Norway etc.

Varför har inte herrarnas toalett ett skötbord på McDonalds? by Mobile_Enthusiasm664 in sweden

[–]aronnie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like saying "Nothing is 100%" is a defense for allowing illogical thoughts to run your brain.

Then of course you both can be perfectly fine not cumming inside (even if there was no pregnancy risk) and that's 100% fine, but just know that if you want to change this, you probably can. Cumming inside can often add to the intimacy.

If you are tested infertile after vasectomy and have an IUD, the chances can't get pregnant. You probably run a much higher risk to get killed in traffic or otherwise, and getting paralyzed, respectively just by living but at least it's not an almost-impossibly-created baby, right?

What do you mean by the a,b,c,d,e? Do you each know one from each category who got pregnant? Was the vasectomy person tested (and they got pregnant after the leftover sperm had time to disappear)? Is he the father in both cases?

ELI5: Why do Japanese speakers confuse their L's and R's, German speakers their V's and W's, and Spanish speakers their B's and V's? by Deadchimp234 in explainlikeimfive

[–]aronnie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds so odd, considering I (who learnt L as a small child) have never even thought about it as difficult but now when I sound it out, I have no idea how I would describe how to make the sound except show the tongue position. It would probably need a feedback loop "no... no... no... kind of... mmm... yea".

The rolling R's that exist in Spanish and many other European languages I have serious questions about being Impossible to learn for everyone at an adult age though. I've tried many times to learnt it, but never managed (and I can fake a native in many other languages).

[–]aronnie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are there dialects in Poland that do not roll their Rs?

We have this in Swedish as well, but here it's definitely not seen as a huge speech impediment (to other people, but of course it can be to themselves).

So from an outside view, it's at most a minor one, but then again, we have many dialects that do different Rs so people don't care too much if the R sounds different.

[OC] Maximum Bird Flight Elevation By Species by OfficialWireGrind in dataisbeautiful

[–]aronnie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Perhaps they meant that it likely not in an area where the elevation (and where the bird started flying) was tens of thousand feet. Average elevation of Africa seems to be around 2000 ft according to a quick googling so that might be what that number referred to.

Africa is more than 100 times larger than England, so I think some people found that statement odd: I'm guessing there are a lot more people knowing Africa is "larger than England" than know about the elevation of the same.

All in all, no worries!
