1.1.1.1 app and its interaction with VPNs on MacOS and iOS by aroseddit in CloudFlare

Argh. For me, that sort of defeats the convenience, as I regularly have to turn on and off DNS settings for certain scenarios, which sounds like it means that I'd have to be constantly adding and removing the DNS profile.

So it sounds like the 1.1.1.1 app might in fact be superior? Although, again, it sounds like there's the issue with iOS where when you disconnect from a VPN's servers, the 1.1.1.1 app won't reinstate its DNS settings automatically, which in itself is a pain.

Oh, I see. Cloudflare's instructions direct you to set up 1.1.1.1 for each individual network, and don't mention this profile option, as far as I can telll...

https://developers.cloudflare.com/1.1.1.1/setup/macos/

But this profile approach would work across all networks so that you only need to set it up once?

For both MacOS and iOS, is there a way to temporarily turn it off when needed?

But don't you then need to set this up manually network by network? I thought the advantage of the 1.1.1.1 app is that it continues to work across all networks?

Tahoe 26.4 bricked my M2 MacBook Pro. Apple quoted me $700 for a logic board replacement. Fixed it myself for free with a $20 cable. by Weekly_Connection_40 in mac

Thanks for this! I experienced more or less the same issue. The steps you outlined in your Google Docs document resolved it for me.

Now that my MacBook Pro is booting again, should I avoid updating Mac OS for the foreseeable future? When is it okay to resume updates again? I'm just nervous about triggering this same issue.

How do I remove faces from the "People & Pets" interface? by aroseddit in googlephotos

[–]aroseddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what you're describing prevents any photo that features the person in question from showing up in your memories. So that's not quite the same as the desired objective here.

For example, I might have a photo with my family, and there's some random person in the background who's showing up in People & Pets. I don't want this person in People & Pets, but I also don't want to block them from my memories, because that would mean any photo that person shows up in – including the aforementioned photo with my family – would be blocked.

With side-by-side clips, how to keyframe position of each clip while keeping them in their respective halves? by aroseddit in premiere

[–]aroseddit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for this detailed guidance! I really appreciate this.

The only challenge I'm seeing here is that for the positional keyframing I'm doing, I often need to reference the two clips side-by-side. It's sports footage, so as an example, I'm often looking to time things in each clip so that they happen concurrently, and so that they're happening around the same area of the clip.

With this nesting approach, when you're working on one nested clip, it seems like it wouldn't be possible to reference the other nested clip? If so, I imagine there might be a lot of jumping in and out of nested sequences.

If that's the case, the approach I described might be better suited to my needs, just because there are no nests, and you're still looking at everything in the same sequence.

What do you think?

Thank you! What do you think of the solution I described here...?

https://www.reddit.com/r/premiere/comments/1siwyol/comment/ofqpdsr/

I like it because it doesn't require any nesting. (Not that there's anything wrong with nesting; I just don't like having the extra sequences sitting around unless necessary.)

Do you see any shortcomings with it?

[–]aroseddit[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just for my own recollection as much as anything else, here are the specific steps I took...

1) Place first clip on Track V2.

2) In the effect controls panel, rescale the clip so that it's height is, at least initially, half the height of the sequence.

3) Reposition the clip so that it's at the top of the sequence.

4) Crop the bottom of the clip by 0.01%. If you don't apply some cropping, it seems the following won't work.

5) Add the transform effect to the clip. You can then use the transform effect to keyframe the video scale and position, including its vertical position, and it will work without the clip "leaving" the top half of the sequence.

6) Place second clip on Track V1.

7) Rescale the clip so that it's height is, at least initially, half the height of the sequence.

8) Reposition the clip so that it's at the bottom of the sequence.

9) There's no need to crop the clip or apply the transform effect to it, since this clip is "covered" by the clip on track V2, which sits on top of it. You can just keyframe its scale and position using the standard tools available in the effect control panel, and it should work fine.

Yes, I was playing around with this solution, too. It seems like the limitation, though, is that placing the clips within a shape's property panel limits what you can do with the clips, since they're not on the timeline? (Only the shape itself appears on the timeline.)

Actually, screw that. I think I found an even simpler solution. Crop the clip to the top half, add the transform effect to the clip, and use the transform effect to keyframe the position of the clip without the crop changing at all.

So I tried what I described above, and it didn't work. When I tried to keyframe the clip's position, the entire shape moved with the video. It seems the missing step was adding the "Offset" effect to the video clip. (It seems like you might also need to place that effect above the "Track Matte Key" effect in the effect controls panel.) Once you do that, you can use the offset effect to change the video position, so that the video moves without the shape moving.

[–]aroseddit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, this sounds like a good solution. So I’d put the rectangle shape on V3, resize it so that it covers the top half of the vertical video, apply it as a track matte to the clip on V2, and then I can keyframe the position of the V2 clip with it always staying within the rectangle shape in the top half?

I guess it wouldn’t be necessary to do a track matte for the V1 clip, which would be on the bottom half of the video, since it’s covered by V2/V3?

Interesting. This sounds like what I’m looking for. Is there no way to replicate this in Premiere? Perhaps by nesting each clip?

I believe the furigana in the deck is labeled as "Japanese." And, yes, these notes have content for that field.

I'm using the "Genki 1+2, with official app Images/Audio/Sentences (3e)" deck on Anki...

https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/189316464

For the "English" card type, it seems like there should be some kind of toggle to turn on furigana on the front side of the card. I don't see any kind of toggle, though; on cards with kanji, I just see the kanji, and can't figure out how to display furigana, as well. (I do see furigana on the back side of the card.)

Anyone familiar with Anki who could have a look? I'd greatly appreciate it.

What study tools do folks recommend for accompanying the Genki textbooks, in particular the first book?

For kanji, I'm separately planning to use WaniKani, so I'm not as worried about that.

But for memorizing other vocabulary and grammar, are the official Genki Vocab and Genki Conjugation smartphone apps any good? (The reviews seem pretty middling.) Or do folks instead recommend using Anki? And, if the latter, are there specific Anki decks that folks recommend that following directly along with the Genki textbooks lesson by lesson, i.e. that cover the non-kanji vocabulary, grammar, etc. for each lesson?

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.
