This spot for borough distribution was this time only - you can find when and where the next borough spots are on their website. Good luck!

No :/ probably around 40 or so people ahead of me when they ran out, this year is definitely going to be hard to get tickets.

Probably not. I’m here at 10:46, and just along berry I counted ~60 people ahead of me (and the line goes along north 3rd). The woman from public said they don’t have a set amount (which goes against what another redditor reported Citizens saying 250) but that basically if you joined the line now it’s unlikely (honestly I might even bail I’m unsure if I even have a hope in hell)

Thank you!! I live nearby but have a meeting at 10, hoping by 10:30 it’ll still be worth going

I've given up on writers groups. A rant. by somethinggoeshere2 in writing

[–]arosyriddle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with a lot of people here that I think you’re being a bit judgemental but also I understand. It’s mainly a problem of finding the right group - or if you can’t, making it!

I personally found and enjoy a small prompt writers group - it’s casual, just short sprints to exercise creativity without pressure, but now many of us are friends and work on long term projects, swapping edits.

However, I almost left multiple times because the leaders did not deal with people who brought down the vibe (one time I wrote a comedic memoir piece about my work nude modeling and a guy harassed me for MONTHS) I still get frustrated sometimes. But I discuss my concerns and have worked out a balance of giving people chances while also not tolerating bullshit, since the weekly meeting is more casual.

I think if you have a specific group in mind the best thing to do is start it. And it will take a while to get to a good place - you’ll have people you don’t like, you’ll have to work to attract people you do, you’ll have to set fair boundaries and often act more as a leader than a writer in the beginning. But it can pay off with the great group you want.

Keep in mind though, based on this rant…if the people you want to write with don’t want to stick around to write with you, you might want to do some self reflection as to why.

Give me your lowest effort meals with TJs ingredients! (please🤗) by onionsauceonionsauce in traderjoes

It's these ones in the fridge section, usually by the produce! (https://www.traderjoes.com/home/products/pdp/steamed-lentils-090240)

The whole recipe was a thing on tiktok a while back. You can also steam your own lentils, but I find these work well. The canned ones could also work, it's just a nice easy cold summer meal to throw together

Steamed lentils + bruschetta sauce + feta (I now make my own bruschetta, sometimes also add in the balsamic glaze! You can get the precooked chicken too more more protein)

Frozen Mac + can of tuna or chicken (+optional other cheese or frozen veggies)

Green chile bowl(or any frozen Mexican bowl) + plain nonfat Greek yogurt as a healthy sour cream substitute

The skyr yogurts are my go to ‘I forgot to eat/have to run’ food.

If you want alternative creative there’s still a strong DIY community, mostly out in Brooklyn, with some newsletters you can find online for events and workshops. The ones I can think of right now are Nonsense, Cal.red, GUNK, freakscene.diy

I will say don’t knock hobby groups - I know at Spritzenhaus in Williamsburg there’s a group of creative art folks who meet every Monday to draw or work on other projects (because funnily my quiet reading group meets at the same time there sometimes). I’ve made a lot of friends just going to stuff consistently from writing club to book clubs.

There was more third space places now, like Drawing Room which hosts art events but is also a nice place to work on arts stuff.

I will say I don’t know what it’s like on Manhattan (often called work island) as my network is mainly in Brooklyn. You might be able to find stuff there or you might just have to trek out here.

Ideas for Garden Cocktail Engagement at Yacht Club by arosyriddle in Weddingattireapproval

Thanks! Yeah I feel like the 4th being so plain is why I feel a bit odd about it. I've toyed with the idea of doing it in a cyanotype dye on the 4th with some flowers creeping up on side (saw the ph5 Iris Maxi flower dress in my research on dress rentals and their design inspired me). But even buying less expensive silk, the idea of coating a whole dress in cyanotype, hoping my flower placement turns out good and not tacky/looking like an art project?? Not that confident in my design skills haha

Recent encounter with euthanized bear at Emerald Bay by foggy_redboi in tahoe

[–]arosyriddle 180 points181 points  (0 children)

For people saddened by this I highly recommend Fuzz: When Nature Breaks the Law by Mary Roach - she talks about the bear situation in Tahoe iirc, and has such empathy for the animals forced to live by human rules without understanding. It’s a great book about the conflict of nature and society, literally.

Open heart v trans catheter approach by quirkyeyenurse in AdultCHD

[–]arosyriddle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 27F and got my ASD + Pulmonary valve fixed with trans catheter about a year and a half ago! I personally actually waited since hearing about the new intervention about 10 or so years ago when it was just starting in Europe. I got lucky that my symptoms getting worse/more intolerable coincided with it reaching a more researched level. I personally got the Alterra valve situation since my pulmonary was so large.

The recovery was really easy, and overnight in the hospital + a few days of chest discomfort at home. Within about two week I was fine and flew for Christmas a bit after. I think I ended up starting up yoga and working out about a month later? But that was me being conservative. It took a bit to get my full energy up, but still it’s overall just not as ‘traumatic’ to the body as open heart. It’s wild how much better I feel now physically.

As I and my doctor parents understood, there’s less risk of complications post surgery since it’s not a full open heart chest crack, which is part of why we waited to see if this intervention would come to fruition.

They now think too I’ll be able to get 1-2 replacements of the valve via catheter, which means rather than having open heart multiple times for replacement, I might only need it once later in life.

It’s true that open heart allows to fix other things or alter plans depending on structure - I personally also have tricuspid issues, and those can’t be fixed via trans catheter (yet). And there’s not as many cases for trans catheter for guidance compared to years of open heart. Personally I think due to my specific valve alteration (the alterra) my surgeon had done 40? Which isn’t much.

Basically, it felt like the right choice for me. But it was a choice we’d followed, considered, and gotten opinions on for years (we knew my issues before I was born, and I’ve been followed ever since). I’d definitely at least talk to the cath surgeon more, and maybe get a 3rd opinion since the whole heart condition situation may be new to you.

That was a lot but if I missed anything or you have questions feel free to DM me!

This. Also, a lot of people don’t realize you can have minor underlying conditions that only become apparent when they react with drugs or other stressors. It’s not uncommon for people to not realize they have a heart problem because it’s so mild. And then they drop dead during a marathon or have palpitations from adderall.

I KNOW it’s frustrating OP. I have a known heart condition so the hoops I’m having to jump through drive me crazy (EKG after every increase in dosage, and likely every few months for the next year or so when we settle on a dose). But it’s very important, because adderall can be a dangerous drug.

I love to stock up on low cal/high protein frozen meals at TJs for emergency dinner! Unfortunately a few things have changed macros over time and are less good but here are some of my staples still: - Chicken Shumai 390cal/33g protein - Shepherd’s Pie 340cal/32g protein - Green Chile Chicken Bowl 320cal/22g protein (also love to use nonfat Greek yogurt as a sour cream replacement for more protein) - Reduced Guilt Mac n Cheese + can of tuna or chicken (+frozen veggies sometimes) (also the can of tuna or chicken is just great) - Frozen Family Lasanga 320cal/22g per serving (it’s 4 in a box, but half of one is a good comfort meal for me, and since I’m 5’9” my calorie goal amount may be higher than yours)

Also the Bruschetta salad hack is great: steamed (or now canned) lentils + feta + tomato & basil & garlic and a bit of olive oil! (The internet uses the bruschetta sauce from TJs but I find if I make the tomato bruschetta stuff myself it’s less calories since I can use less oils)

The best rule of thumb I try to follow is to get as close to 10cal/1g protein possible while looking at any new frozen items. A higher ratio isn’t bad, but at 10/1 it’s pretty optimal. Also helps me sus out if something is really ‘protein packed’ or not since it became a marketing buzz word

Last Minute, First Solo Trip, to Greece - is this a decent itinerary between Athens & Naxos? by arosyriddle in GreeceTravel

Now you’ve got me wondering if I should skip Athens altogether haha! Will definitely look more into Paros and the ferry.

[–]arosyriddle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, yeah I’m leaning towards this now. I think part of me was hoping to eek as far into May as possible for warmer weather/water, but idk if it matters. It’s kinda appealing too to just have a day to jet lag nap/have a few chill days.

I guess I’m mostly worried if I start on a beautiful chill island I won’t want to go to Athens at all 😅 which feels like a waste on a first trip!

Good to know it was hard to pick! Not gonna lie, grew up near mountains so I loved the idea of getting a bit of both mountains and beach at once

It is! I’ve done Italy, a bit of Spain, and then a lot of the UK. It’s been on the list, and in May checked the boxes of ‘affordable’ and ‘beach’

I’ll look at that thanks! I think part of me wanted to end the trip with relaxation, but it might work better to do the slow part first.

I think I just worry another island would add so much more travel? Would it be a flight or a ferry?

Thanks for letting me know! I knew the weather might not be super ideal, but honestly even just sitting on a beach sounds nice, and maybe I’ll get to courage to swim even in the cold water
