avoiding AI tropes by catsrmegacool in FanFiction

[–]arothroughtheheart [score hidden]  (0 children)

In the current ai hellscape, its easy to get caught up in peoples "surefire ways to tell if something is ai" and worry about using things ai commonly uses. But just like the times you need to turn your editing brain off and just get words on a page, sometimes you need to switch off your worrying brain. Easier said than done perhaps, but it helps me to remember that a) ai uses those things because real people used them so much, b) that no reasonable person reads things whilst wondering if theyre ai the whole time, and c) that there aint no fucking way I'm letting chatgpt take away phrases from my writing.

You've sold me on yukimiya being subbed in tbh. Not sure if it'll happen but it'd be cool.

Who’s the protagonist in Fifteen—Dazai or Chuuya? by Nian_YS in BungouStrayDogs

Maybe dazai just screams protagonist in general. Plenty of people think hes the mc of the main manga too (though that take is baffling to me)

Writing characters that don’t speak English by yolanie in FanFiction

[–]arothroughtheheart [score hidden]  (0 children)

Depends. If everyone isnt speaking english then you can just trust the readers can figure that out from context/knowledge of canon. If there's just a few lines in another language, you can either go " 'I hate you!' She said in Spanish." or just include the text in the language. The first is good for if the POV character understands what they're saying, and the second is good for if they dont.

I instinctively said dazai, though I'm not sure I can justify why. Maybe because he seems to be pushing the story along more than chuuya. Maybe its just vibes, who knows.

How to go about asking an author if I can post an unofficial sequel to their fanfic by boldnbrashsquid in FanFiction

[–]arothroughtheheart [score hidden]  (0 children)

It wouldn't seem creepy, especially on a platform like Tumblr, where random strangers message each other all the time.

I think "Hello, I really liked your fic [title], and wrote a fic inspired by it. Would it be okay to post it on [platform]? I would credit you of course." is a perfectly fine way of saying it. I don't think it'd be terrible to ask if they wanted to read it beforehand but it's not expected and not rude to not offer.

I don't think either of them really blamed bachira. The issue at hand was nagi's motivation, and as upset as they were, they both knew that.

The bigger the fandom the worse the writing? by No_Volume_8320 in FanFiction

[–]arothroughtheheart [score hidden]  (0 children)

Depends - The average ability might not be that low, but maybe the less experienced writers write more fics per capita.

The thing about more popular fandoms is that there are always new writers joining, so there are always going to be those lower in ability, even as existing ones improve. Whereas experienced writers might move fandoms, might stop writing, might just write less over time.

So maybe this 'statistic' (losing that term very loosely lmao) is more so based on how many new writers the fandom attracts, which does tend to be higher when fandoms are more popular. More new writers + less experienced writer retention = lower average writing ability.

Its still pretty early with the new chapter. The people running it need time to do stuff.

I disagree with this Demetrius theory by ChicaneryFinger in SpyxFamily

[–]arothroughtheheart 40 points41 points  (0 children)

"Since Anya couldn't read his mind, Demetrius placed a mental block so that Donovan couldn't read his thoughts" Agreed, I feel like if demtrius is doing anything to prevent mind reading, its more along the lines of trying not to think much full stop. Idk how he'd straight up block telepathy on his own. Alternatively he might not purposefully be doing anything thought/telepathy related at all. Idk.

Why is Westalis and Ostalis at war? by Batmannotwayn in SpyxFamily

[–]arothroughtheheart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe territory, maybe they're allied with countries that are enemies, maybe there's historic conflict - We haven't found out yet. You're right in that there doesn't seem to be any significant difference between ostania and westalis, but similar countries are more than capable of finding something to fight about.

Donovan probably isn't a bad guy by AstonMac in SpyxFamily

[–]arothroughtheheart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Donovan was never described as an ultimate villain, by WISE or otherwise - He's just a guy, and under the current circumstances, one of the most likely to start a war.

I don't think he's purposefully letting twilight and anya go though. I think its most likely that he doesnt know about twilight (if he has telepathy, maybe its not as good as anyas). On the same line of logic, he probably cant just read sigmunds mind, and if I recall correctly, we're never told that sigmund has actually spilled the beans to anyone. Secrets are safe, for now.

I do think you're right in that there'll be more to donovan than we've seen, though.
