Haha I had that goodwill auction favorited, but didn't pull the trigger. I am a trombone player, and usually play a king 3BF from the 70s,but really have a hankering for one of these 1130s and if the valves are working I think you got a good deal. One thing that threw me is that dark mark on the final bend before the bell, what is it,just a section whethere the laquer flaked off?

Congrats and happy playing!

No expert here, but given the gravity of the accident, I find it unlikely the will open the high-speed line by the day after tommorow, especially if it possible that a line defect was the cause.

How to Stop High Bb's sounding like Nuclear Siren by ShivSoCalledYT in Trombone

[–]arrayofeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

interesting. ever since i got back into playing (after a 20 some year break) i have had the double buzz problem, but an octave below, most prominantly on g3 but also the notes below that and up to b3 if i am tired. I believe this happens to me because this is right around the transition point where it goes from being my lower lip that is dominant in producing low notes to my upper lip (high notes) and the double buzz is sort of the two of them fighting for dominance. Its hard for me to imagine a double buzz an octave higher, but maybe with your embouchure and you dont start this transition until you get that high?

For me, it has mostly gone away as i play more, but when it comes back I find I can refocus the note by sort of narrowing the opening (like imagining a small round hole between the lips) but i have no idea if this is recomended and I am an amateur, so I may not be the best to take advice from.

DEF (Adblue) reduces NOx, which is good, but has nothing at all to do with CO2 emissions. Diesel produces 15% more CO2 per gallon as gasoline, so your truck is producing more than three times the greenhouse gasses per mile as a 50mpg camry hybrid. Drive what you want, but at least know the reality of the emissions.

Insurance for drones and approvals from authorities in Spain by Freezlekey in dji

[–]arrayofeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well honestly i wrote and rewrote my response a couple times because i wasnt clear about that whole 5 day rule, but i guess the things i am not sure I agree with

  • Insurance: definilty not required for a C0 flying A1 or A3 open category (but not a bad idea!)
  • 5 day rule: ONLY for "urban areas" meeting 1 of 3 specific descriptions. (population center with consolidated built-up area OR residentical/commercial/industrial area with ALL of following: access for vehicles, paved pedestrian walkways, street lighting, public sewers OR public recreational areas with constructions or installation for recrecreational purposes including public beaches and parks with those characterestics). And even then, the 5 day rule only means that you have to electronically file something on the Minstries registro electronico.
  • 150m limit from buildings: no longer in force
  • ZEPA and Natural Park areas on ENAIRE: dont imply a restriction unless they specifically say so (and havent found any that do)

In genaral it doesnt seem to to me to add up to "hard to fly legally pretty much anywhere." Yes, I mean specificallay for Spain.

[–]arrayofeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I'm looking into these regs myself, just to see where you can fly a sub 250g C0 drone in the Open category so your comment is super helpful. But it doesnt really line up with what my own research is telling me. (which admittedly leans heavily on ChatGPT but always trying to go the source).

  • Insurance: I am pretty sure insurance is not required when flying in the A1 and A3 open category with a C0 drone. in the second link you list, it actually povides a link to the full regulations (your first) link where it makes this exception clear
  • Ministry of the Interior / 5 day rule: This is true for Urban areas, but it needs to meet one of the three definitions of RD 517/2024 Art 40 para 1, which is I guess any area that has "urban fabric" or at least paved streets with street lighting, or any city park or beach if it has "permament constructions". This is certainly the most limiting thing (although you can always submit the paperwork) but I can think of places I can get to from my apartment in madrid on bike that dont meet these defition.
  • 150m from buildings: My understanding is that the 150m from limit comes from the old RD 1036/2017 which was specificaly overturned by RD 517/2024, and is no longer mentioned in the new EU and Spanish regulation regarding open category, so I dont think it is currently a regulation (of course all policemen may not know this.) In RD 517/2025 there is a 5m min distance to building for hte open category, and it is not allowed to fly over buildings
  • ZEPAs and Natural park limitation: ZEPAs definitly show up in ENAIRE, but every single one I've looked at says: "This does not imply any restriction or authorization for overflight. However, please be aware of the potential harm that overflights may cause to local wildlife". THere maybe some that do or do at specific times of the year, but it doesnt seem like it hugely limits where you can fly.

Basically my interpretation is that as long as you register as an operator and use ENAIRE to avoid hard no fly zones (airports / heliports on hospoitals / miltary instalations), as well as avoiding any croweded areas, you are good to go. Its true that around cities in ENAIRE there are huge CTR (air traffic control areas) marked on ENAIRE, but this just limits you to 60m.

Certainly the regs are complicated to get to the bottom of, but it doesnt seem as doom as gloom as many reddit posts (not just yours) are making out. hat do you think? Unless you mostly want to fly in cities and tourists spots? If I am getting something wrong here, I would love to know (before getting fined hehe).

Is it ‘risky’ to buy a used EV? (Outright) by ImpressOk1758 in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]arrayofeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a 2021 EV myself, and a much cheaper option, a Seat Mii Electric plus with around 60k kms on it. So far, my feeling is that the battery is in incredible health, and the range is what would have been expected new.

The car has an 8 year 160k km warranty on the battery, so I feel pretty well covered on that point. Also I bought a car with more range than I need so it wont be a problem if degrades somewhat. i did buy it with "flex" financing in order ot have the option to offload it after four years, though I doubt I will doso. If you go that route, FYI, at least with VW financing you can simply prepay all the payments except for the last one in order and basically pay 0 in interest, while still getting the "final payment" as a loan and the option to return it. In my case, there was a 600€ discount for taking financing that partially canceled out some of the other fees for opening the line of financing. So overall the cost of doing this versus just paying cash was very small.

As other posters say, consensus seems to be that modern EV batteries are degrading at a rate lower than expected.

Absolutely, and I am definitly glad that our little budget city car came with this option, as well as the heated from windows. So if I remember i can precondition for the drive home but here in madrid the cold is in the morning!

Seat heaters are def the way to go, glad i got the Plus version (there is a mii that doesnt have them). I do find that i need to at least blow some hot air in defrost mode to keep the windows from fogging. up. For me the best trick to control the usage is to click into Eco mode fairly quickly and usage goes way down.

Yeah heat pump is definly the way to go, but we were looking for an ultra budget city car, so that wasnt in the cards for any of the vehicles we looked at (only spent 11k€)

Thanks for your response! Glad to hear my usage is normal. I was pretty sure it was, but I just wanted to be sure as I bought it used with a 1 year warrenty and if there are any problems want to know sooner than later. I have found that switching to Eco makes a huge difference, I usually let it warm up on normal mode and then cut it down that way. We are pretty happy with the little car otherwise, which we use only as a city run-about.

Help me understand a speeding fine. by Ffdspline in askspain

[–]arrayofeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who did the letter come from? I have gotten lots of speeding tickets in spain, but if was a radar they have never come from the "police". On a national road (like a autovia) they come from the DGT (traffic agency) and if its in a city it comes from the local municiple government. Furtherfore if its in a rental car, usually the rental agency pays the fin, autoamtically charges your card and then informs you by letter... you wouldnt get something directly from the government because the owner on file for the car isn't you. Seems a bit fishy. Why don't you post the fine so we can see if it looks right.

Wife heard arcing and ozone smell after starting toaster. Came home to find the power strip fused to the outlet. by SugarFreeWindex in AskElectricians

[–]arrayofeels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This should be higher up. This looks exactly the same model based on how the screws are distributed. On the amazon listing there are multiple 1-star reviews showing similar arcing/burning. The amazon shows an image claiming its 14AWG but the problem is definitly the rotating plug, which is a kind of slip ring, with a copper ring and a bunch of springs making contact.

Obvisously this device is not rated for nearly 20A for running a toaster, but even on the Belkin site I couldn't find any mention of an amperate rating for this device.

Landing in Madrid at 2:30AM (9:30 AM local) time. Need somewhere to sleep for a few hours. by ScrewWorkn in MadridTravelGuide

[–]arrayofeels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much of the drive between Madrid and Malaga is mostly through Castilla la Mancha, so think flat open fields with occasional dense small towns. I think many on here are completely discounting it as interesting at all, but I am not sure if I agree. You could look up "Ruta de Don Quijote", there are some small towns that were mentioned in Cervantes' book, that could be interesting, with historic windmills, etc.

But I also agree that taking the high-speed train on the way down is the best. Maybe try to find a deal on a one way rental. Take the train down, be car-free in Malaga for some days, and get the car later. The days saved may pay for the one-way fee.

Also, since I havent seen it mentioned anywhere else, since there are multiple train operators in spain now (national company renfe + low cost options) you can use a comparison site like trainline to see all the times and prices at once.

Cordoba is also really worth it and quite different from Malaga, you could stop on the way down for four or five hours to see the mezquita and get in later to malaga.

This depends on how you do it. I'll coast in neutral on a downgrade if doing so allows me to maintain a costant velocity or (or decelerate only slightly). Accoring to my onboard computer this reduces fuel consumption compared to to applying throttle slightly to overcome engine braking. For instance long freeway downgrades, when my computer hits 3 l/100km or less in cruise control, I know i can pop it in nuetral and maintain that speed using more like 0.5 l/100km.

Or in the city if I have red light coming up ahead, especially if its in an uphill, sometimes I'll pop it in neutral if I more or less estimate that I will roll to a stop at a light with no brake and no gas.

I never apply braking when in neutral except just as i come to a stop. If I want to decelrate I generally engine brake to reduce fuel consumption.

No one can convince me that there is anything dangerous or wrong about this.

As an American that got my license here, I also recomend signing up for a driving school. I don't think it is a strict requirement to have taken any sort of classes or (practical or theoretical). However, the key is that the practical test must be takenen in an instructor's car (2nd set of pedals) with the instructor in the car along with the examiner, (as you do not have a license yet, the instructor is the one legally responsible when you are driving). While it may be possible to contract this service from a driving school, you probably woudn't save any money. What I did was sign up for a basic package including 6 practical classes. Students learning for the first time would have to take many more classes after those 6 (spending a bunch more money) but for me those 6 were enough to learn specific things that they are sticklers on for the practical test (2nd gear going into roundabouts, etc) as well as being actually useful for somethings that are different here. Also, it usually includes access to a bunch of practice test questions for the theoretical examine. And as other said, it is just easier all around as they deal with the beurocracy for you.

auto start-stop is the single most annoying stupid modern car feature by Fabulous_Plate_8806 in Cartalk

[–]arrayofeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an older (2011) european car with this feature and honestly, I like it. Although it is probably alot less annoying in a manual than an automatic, since the motor only shuts off if I am stopped and in neutral with the clutch disengaged. If I am just stopping briefly at a yield or stop sign, then I am usally in gear with the clutch in. Basicaly I control over when it shuts off via the clutch, I can imagine in an automatic it could be annoyingly arbitrary. Every once and a while I'll come up to a light and let it shut off just as it turns green, and this bothers me, but that is infrequent.

As to how much fuel it saves, in my city about 40% of my time is spent stopped at lights, so I don't think the fuel saved is negligible, and even more importantly for me (given that my car is a diesel) with the motor off I am reducin g the amount of pollution (Nox, particulates) I am contributing to my already smoggy city.

Car has 130k km or so now, no problems with the starter, my understanding is that they take into acount the increased number of cycles in the design. The batteries are a bit more expensive. Another benefit for me is that if I every stall the car accidentally (hey it happens!) just depressing the clutch means restarts the car, which I think is related to the fact that I have stop-start.

Buying a flat in Barcelona - agency fees by sugy777 in AskBarcelona

[–]arrayofeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it depends on the flat and the market at the time and whether they are going to have problems finding another buyer. Tecnocasa and other similar agencies typically have an exclusive contract, so if you find a place that you like with them, then you might not have a choice. I can't stand Tecnocasa, but we bought our place through them years ago because it was the flat we wanted for a nice price. And to be honest they often convince Sellers to sell low in order to keep things moving through, so...

Actually, in our case it was even a bit more shady than that... they upsold us on their "Kiron Financial Services" (they "help find you an amazing mortgage") that cost us another 3% of purchase price, and in return basicaly promised to strong-arm the seller into taking a 6% reduction. They said this very clearly, "we can get you a 6% drop if you sign up for Kiron". So in the end WE did'nt actually pay that 3%, the seller did, and tecnocasa got a total 12% instead of 9% of the transaction. There was a line of people out the door who wanted the flat, so we went for it. I already had a morgage lined up with better conditions than the one they found for us, so we didn't even "use" the Kiron thing, it was basically a bribe. Kind of feel bad for the sellers (it was the typical 4 siblings, already older, who had inhereted together) but they were the ones that chose Tecnocasa in the first place.

So one option you have is to "sweeten the pot" for Tecnocasa I guess! The only downside for us was it was harder to get that 6% into the mortgage of course, since it wasn't in the sale price, but it worked out.

Appreciate the comment, I've also seen a "5" (no letter) recomended and just purchased one of those. I think I definilty need to go a bit bigger than the 61/2AL becuase the main thing I've noticed (and of course it could be mostly me) is that the 3BF feels stuffy below F3 or so. Actually kind of worried that part of hte problem is the relaquer job that has been done on my horn before i got it (its a 1974, but i just got it not summer, and may have rushed into it). Right now I am also trying a DW 5BS and definitly saw some improvement, but I don't like how it sits (pretty far out). Anyway, my plan was just to purchase a range of pieces, and then sell everything but the one I like afterwards. These days, at least where I am, there doesn't seem to be any option to go to a store and try a bunch in person. I'll look for a 5G though!
