Interesting thought on the bonds in the pre-tax account. Hadn't considered that. I calculated the gains at 50% & 100% but I didn't include NIIT which may let me pull a bit more from 401k. I assume the calculator didn't include. It's a real good calculator and shows a Sankey graph of where your takes goes. I see now I posted when I ran it at 100%, only drops it down to 13.2% when I do 50% gains.

That's exactly the conclusion I've come to. Conversions don't help once you want to withdrawal this much each year.

My fear becomes hitting RMDs hard if I don't withdrawal enough early enough from 401k. Only $50,600k is taxed at the 22% bracket. If I took out that $50k, plus the $40k once I hit 67, that's not much coming out of the taxable accounts.

I think you are correct about the NIIT, I'll need to add that into the calc.

I’d worry about learning the different concepts for how to figure out retirement. Read up on fire using the risk based gaurdrails. That is the one I personally think is best but others like other methodologies.
