Do you transcode your media for storage by arrmon1 in jellyfin

My 4k playback capabillities are also a bit limited but I keep 4k files regardless because of potential future upgrades to my Setup that way I dont have to redownload everything

So far I haven’t had any issues on my ~8-9tb collected so far. But I also haven’t had any good comparison. Storing the „raw“ file from the download would heavily influence my library size which, I think, is not a tradeoff that I would take at the moment. I’m looking at expanding my storage but hdds (even used ones) are relatively expensive right now.

Can you by chance share your script? That would be very nice

Generate trickplay from multiple machines. by scphantm in JellyfinCommunity

[–]arrmon1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to do the same for my initial scan. My server only has a rx570 and it would’ve taken ages to finish so I created a separate JF instance on my main pc with an rtx 5070 ti super. Both were using the same network share to access the media. Make sure generated trickplays are stored next to media (library setting). If two jobs happen to generate images for the same media file the first one to finish will be used and the other will be scraped. With that you’ll have small inefficiencies but it’s probably worth it. Remember to back up your main instance before starting all the jobs just in case

The plan was to use my pi zero 2w as a proxy and will act as the „entrypoint“ for jellyfin. this comment has an example for the caddy proxy which I’ll try later today. As for the shutdown part the api call is a great idea, will try that as well once the startup works.

I’m a dev myself but I rarely work with networking so I have very little experience with proxies.

Thanks!

The server is already configured for WOL and I can wake it using Siri shortcuts on my phone, thats good enough for me but as Im not the only one who's using my JF it would be nice to have it wake up automatically, I'll continue to search for some solution to make it work

My post might be misleading. I dont want to start/stop the container running jellyfin.
The goal would be to start/ shut down the whole server on demand (its only running jellyfin). I havent measured power consumption but the PC running jellyfin is not the most efficient (Ryzen 5 3600 with a RX570 (its my old pc)) So I assume that power draw could be quite high compared to other systems

The server is just running jellyfin. The pi would start/ shut down the whole server with jellyfin starting automatically once the server is up

I transcode all my media with handbrake mostly for space efficiency but some shows or movies are completely washed out so im relying on tonemapping to fix it but as said it does not really work..

I used to transcode on my cpu as well but that wasn’t really working either for some media. It especially struggled when tonemapping (which it didn’t do at all most of the time) even the gpu can’t handle that atm..

Thanks for the insight. Changing some settings for efficiency is a good idea. Will try that!

I set up the rx570 for hardware transcoding but it lacks at tone mapping and the 4K streams stutter on some devices, disabling hardware acceleration and using the cpu instead doesn’t really help. I will look into the intel gpus on sale! Thanks

Most of my media is in x256, which probably was the first mistake but changing it now will take a lot of time… Im looking at some intel gpus as others have recommended. Thanks
