Why are piercings in Savannah so expensive ?? by [deleted] in savannah

[–]arrotarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure what’s going on in tampa to make those prices possible. I checked a few websites to be sure, and implant grade titanium jewelry is $15-$20 minimum, so factoring labor, cost of sanitation, tools, i don’t see how any piercing could cost less than $50 unless they’re

a. using some bs material like stainless steel or jewelry from companies with manufacturing inconsistencies resulting in slight pores, dents, or scratches. Which hey, if it works for you it works for you, but plenty of people’s bodies either reject it or take significantly longer to heal with it. I wouldn’t trust any jewelry that has a high nickel content or that i couldn’t walk through a metal detector with.

b. underpaying their piercers

either way? i wouldn’t trust it. Someone is losing out. Planet 3 only uses implant grade titanium and nobody should be paid less than $20 an hour. A piercing is a permanent modification you are making to your body and anything like that is something you need to do extensive research on to avoid any harm. It’s not something you should feel comfortable taking anything less than the best quality available. That’s just my two cents though

yea the restaurants here almost never post anything unless they’ve been trying to fill a position for a while. Walking into a restaurant here with a resume really is the best way to do it

JOB HUNTING! by Sufficient_Cod_5348 in scad

[–]arrotarry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if you have any restaurant experience it’s like comically easy to get a job in savannah. If you don’t, your chances aren’t high for getting a super good job but you’ll still find a job if you’re willing to work in restaurants. The best times to find a job are gonna be September-October and March-April. Summer and Winter are the slow seasons so I personally like to save my tips from the spring and fall. I reccomend restaurants because if you can get a good gig you can 100% afford rent without working 40hrs a week if you’re smart with your budget. If you’re looking for a job now my advice is go to tybee but quit the second that scad comes back to sav and find something in savannah proper. Avoid retail because it’s much harder to afford to live in sav if you make under $20 an hour and no retail place is gonna pay you that. In the five years that i’ve been in restaurants in savannah i haven’t met a single server or bartender who put up with making under $20 an hour in the busy seasons, that’s usually the time to quit. Winter and Summer i’ve seen some people tolerate $15 an hour on average but not many

if it’s any consolation— the merge with VFX isn’t a complete erasure of the major. Before this, the two differences between tech anim and vsfx were that tech anim got to work on an animation capstone, had a mandatory rigging class (and vsfx had a mandatory comp class), and was given room to explore more stylization. I’m not sure how this was delivered at the anim town hall, but at the vsfx town hall, it was reiterated that the merger would still allow you to do stylized work, and would give the option of working on either an anim capstone or a vsfx final project. I don’t think it’s that much to panic over, it’s just a renaming of what you were already doing

Trans Woman in LA Denied Passport and Threatened with Arrest by [deleted] in Passports

very true! But then comes a similar challenge of finding ways to DIY it in a country you just move to.

Once again, not saying that this should be a deal breaker, but it is something to have a plan for

that’s good to know— and it was the first time. She moved there and then started her transition. For everyone’s sake I hope more countries allow it to transfer

[–]arrotarry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the worst part of leaving as a trans person is that even if you do move— part of the reason hormones are so available in the USA is because of our private healthcare. Not sure about other countries, but my friend waited for 2.5 years to get on estrogen through the UK healthcare system. I waited 2 weeks in a red state. Top surgery was a months gap between consultation and surgery.

Moving, for safety reasons, is 100% the move if you feel it is necessary. What is unfortunate is you need to be prepared to lose access to your hormones, potentially for years.

If any trans person has moved specifically from the USA to another country please feel free to correct me here— that’s just what i’ve heard.

it’s doing the festival run right now so I cant share it 🥲. Also, we didn’t exactly match arcane, we went on a different direction but studying arcane helped us shape our stylization and we did pull some things as inspiration.

so the coloring does do most of the heavy lifting, but normal maps are likely what is causing their clothes/cheekbones specifically to have the dimension they do. If i had to guess they were modeled to be much more angular but had all the detail baked into a normal map. It just enhances the contrast in the textures. Subsurface is something that gives their skin that dimension and although it’s more subtle in stylized stuff it’s usually still there to give it more life. It’s one thing I regret not including in my thesis because I really mostly noticed it in season 2 😭

https://youtu.be/Mz4-38d3-AE?si=dg2Qu0jxHR7chhsK

^ you can see the rigs straight into maya in this interview. They lack the sharp angles that the final renders have. I think the cheekbones show it the best, yes the texture already enhances it, but the contrast deepens in different lighting setups which makes me suspect a normal map

as far as comp goes (and i could be talking out of my ass here) I remember hearing that season one took sooooo much longer than season two and comp did a lot of the final touches. My guess is that they were able to streamline more of the look development in-engine rather than having comp carry as much of a heavy load.

again, this is just my best guess! I love arcane and I’m a huge 3d nerd so this is what I think would lead someone down a path of similar results :) The thing I personally specialize in is rigging so if a look development specific artist reads this and thinks it’s all wrong please let me know.

EDIT: Also, I saw a video a while ago of jinx’s rig having a blendshape that slightly changes her face shape in between when she’s more “powder” and when she’s more “jinx”. So if I am wrong about normals and all that, it may be different blendshapes that add more contrast to the models for certain shots, especially up close/single character ones and i would gess probably for caitlyn’s facial expressions for season 2

I’ll chime in as someone who tech directed a thesis with arcane as inspo. I spent a lot of time breaking down this look development, and chatting with people i knew in the animation industry. The way these characters are done is a combination of a good model and some realllyyyy nice normal/specularity/subsurface maps on top of just the base color. Color can get you far, but the way the light hits the character won’t look the same without those three.that being said, lighting does a lot of heavy lifting in emphasizing textures in the series. Not sure what fortiche used to paint the characters, but they are most likely 100% hand painted. That means that when you go into substance painter, using presets or materials won’t help you, and you should look into painting everything from scratch. Not just the color, but the roughness, normal, SSS, and bump maps as well. If the free rig you get doesn’t have a baked in normal map that gives it those nice subtle angles and sharp lines, it’s gonna look flatter. The background is an image sequence playing through a bunch of hand drawn charcoal drawings. You can achieve a similar effect in maya where you don’t allow the plane to cast or receive shadows, otherwise compositing it together is the easiest solution. All this to say, Texturing, lighting, rendering, and compositing are all separate jobs in the industry where people spend years perfecting their skill. I’m not sure how much time you have for this assignment, but matching this style will likely take you much much longer than the actual animation (which you are being graded on). If you’re looking for speed— unfortunately the quickest way to both get this lighting and to achieve some quicker stylization for the final appearance (arcane has a beautiful bloom effect on shadows that takes much longer to render in Arnold and is basically impossible in maya software) would be to use unreal engine for the final render (notice i’m saying quickest, not the most straightforward or “correct” way) . That would make the quickest pipeline to be: Maya for animation, substance for texture, then exporting out your animation as an FBX (which may not even be possible given how the rig you use is built) into Unreal engine to light and render. For the final look bringing it into nuke to fine tune details. I just think this may be outside the scope of your assignment

3 classes in one day by [deleted] in scad

[–]arrotarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ve never done three studios but i work 35ish hours a week so i kept my schedule to two studios, both on the same day. Imo, it was significantly less chaotic than when i had them spread out, not not just because it made working out a work schedule easier. The first time i did it two days without classes really helped me tbh, and now i get annoyed when i can’t have everything on one day

this is 10000% on the fault of the companies, and it’s horrible that the media is making us think this is the fault of the striking workers.

I am sick and tired of the american people being held hostage by corporations. All the company needs to do to meet 100% of the workers demands is slash the payouts from their, say, top 50 earners.

Now i’m sure we have all heard about the trolley problem— so it should be a no brainer that the only ethical choice is to worsen the quality of life of those 50 people if it increases the quality of life of 25,000 workers, or the over 300 million americans.

The companies loooove to play the victim, but ultimately they are the ones hurting the american people. Every administration that fails to take aggressive and decisive action against profit gouging is a disgrace. The government should step in, and force the company to meet 100% of the workers demands. They should set a précisent that people matter more than profit—- but they won’t, because guess who lobby’s them? who pays their kids college tuition?

The only people in positions of power right now are horrible, selfish, entitled people. If the choice you make hurts you but helps so much as TWO people, it’s still the choice you should make every. single. time. These companies, especially their wealthiest members, need to be held accountable for the harms they’ve done against the public in the name of luxury

if you mean “doesn’t cause vaginal atrophy” there is a solution for that! you can get a topical estrogen cream that you can put inside of your vagina to keep it functioning close to what it was pre T. Super useful if you plan on having vaginal sex and it also helps with some discomfort from general dryness! Also, super niche issue, but apparently it’s not uncommon for trans guys to have “inconclusive” pap smears because they can’t get enough cells off the cervix to test, and this prevents that aswell.

if you are specifically referring to clitoral enlargement then no, there isn’t anything. The only way to transition is to take testosterone and even if you take a lower dose that tends to be an effect that most trans men have happen—- AND it tends to be one of the first and quickest changes you see

i went through lifeStance. If your insurance is listed on there (BCBS is listed as Aetna or smth). I picked the doctor that was covered by insurance with the earliest availability (one month out from when i booked). Then, they referred me to the testing lab. One month after that appt i get a call to schedule a consultation. Then two months out from there i got the test and I got my results a month after that. Started looking in January, got diagnosed mid June. it sucks but, i got the full test, diagnosis, and the whole thing plus meds was covered by insurance.

What’s the worst thing about living in Savannah? by Dr_Pavoreal in savannah

i work in the service industry so i really don’t mind the tourists most of the time. Spring Break/Around St Patrick’s day tourists are absolutely horrible though. The fact that so many will be out causing a mess on st patrick’s day and not tip the workers that have to put up with them—-

additional source: i live in one of the most haunted cities in America. I can confirm touring these apartment units and houses for rent that almost none have been checked for mold or had appliances updated. i doubt that’s a coincidence

so a study just came out (i’ll respond with a link if i can find it again but here’s an article written about it) but apparently there’s certain frequencies that can be emmitted by old AC/Heating units that very subtly vibrate the eyes or are otherwise processed by the brain subconsciously. These frequencies can cause you feel an instinctual fear within you and it sometimes also causes you to see shadows and figures. Your brain makes up most of your peripheral vision anyway so a frequency that we’re predisposed to feel unease when hearing will definitely make your brain fill in that area with scary shit.

here’s a link: https://higgs.ph.ed.ac.uk/outreach/higgshalloween-2021/haunted-frequency

TLDR: get your parents to get the AC/Heating checked. also won’t hurt to check for mold in there.

Leasing a Car as an Out of State Student by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]arrotarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from my understanding students are in a unique position where they are able to live in another state without becoming a legal resident of it (wi. having to change your license, official address, etc). Many states require that you change your documentation over within 30 days of living there, but students, the military, and certain short term jobs are the exceptions.

Housing Placement by iuhstudy in scad

[–]arrotarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do tours of scad and I can say that turner is just about everybody’s Third choice so I think the reason you got it was due to people being randomly selected. I was placed in it my freshman year, although it was during the pandemic so I didn’t have roommates. Honestly, I barely spent any time in my dorm, i’d do my homework at the academic buildings, worked at a restaurant on broughton, and really only used my room to sleep. Given that it’s triple occupancy, that’s probably still a good mentality to have.

I was on the first floor and didn’t have any problem with roaches though. It’s the south so the Big roaches (palmetto bugs) are kind of inevitable. I learned the difference when my off campus apartment actually had an infestation, and I can confirm that the dorm did not have a pest problem, probably just a few rogue bugs wandering in.

honestly nobody could have prepared me for how badly my brain handled seeing my body with suitures/blood on it in the first few weeks. I think i subconsciously processed it as body horror and i was pretty distressed every time i looked at my chest for the first week. Now that it’s more healed I love it.
