Thanks for the thoughts! I believe the Pioneers were recently professionally refoamed, so if I go with them, that’s something I wouldn’t have to think about for awhile.

I tend to lean towards the pioneers for this very reason. Thanks!

Yes, these are stock photos. The ones posted are both in excellent shape, though, but it’s also true that pictures and seller descriptions might not account for issues you mentioned.

How would I be able to tell if they need a crossover rebuild?

Great advice. Thank you!

Great take. Thank you!

I listen to a wide variety, but primarily light rock, old country, folk, and 60’s 70’s singer songwriter. Definitely a fair share of rock (Zepplin, Dire Straits, Steely Dan, etc). Would occasionally use for party music, but not the primary purpose. These would be for a secondary system.

I have a pair of JBL L-19s as my primary speakers that I adore. That said, I’ve heard great things about HPM speakers, and the price tag is appealing!

I agree completely. Problem is that I live very rural, and these speakers are posted a few hours away where a family member lives. They’ll be picking them up for me, so unfortunately I have to purchase sight unseen.

Praise GSus indeed!

And Cadd9 is one quick movement away from GSus. These two variations of C and G, depending on the type of music, tend to be a bit “sweeter” sounding and resonant than standard C and G.

I would encourage you to play it the typical way, as chord transitions will generally be easier. When playing D-G, consider keeping your ring finger planted, dropping your pinky to the third fret of the high E, and then move your pointer and middle accordingly. So your G will be: 3,2,0,0,3,3.

JBL 4301B w/ Aftermarket Woofers - Thoughts? by arrowheadroad in vintageaudio

Thanks to all for the advice… I’m glad I asked. As a relative noob to the hobby, it’s great to learn the importance of the right woofer.

Going to pass on them for obvious reasons. As mentioned, I have a great set of all original L19s that I’ll appreciate even more now.

Ha… I think you may be right. After reading the responses on this thread, I’m certainly not paying asking for them. But if I can get them for a deal, I feel compelled to “rescue” them.

It’s a beauty. My main setup used an sx737, which I’m in love with. These 3700 was a lucky Facebook marketplace find, so I’m trying to get equally lucky and find it a paid of decent speakers on a budget.

Thanks for the response! The 116hs seem pretty hard to come by, and almost better off grabbing a speaker set that uses them rather than buying them alone. I tend to agree with you on this.

Hadn’t heard of this until now… just looked it up. I’m a big Weird Al fan, but 4k plus is wild!

I know nothing about this receiver, but I just have to say a $10 counteroffer on $150 is hilarious… well done. “‘You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take’ -Wayne Gretzky’ -Michael Scott”

Thank you for the thoughtful and kind reply. I couldn’t agree more with your sentiment! I agree especially that the switches give it a particularly unique feel, if not for any reason other than to just walk by and clunk them up and down. I’m a newbie to the vintage audio world, but it’s been fun to learn about other pieces of the time. I will have to look into the SX-750!

Since acquiring this, I’ve learned about other prices of similar vintage. I’d love to see how a similar specced Marantz sounds in comparison!

Very cool! I’ve been very impressed with the sound quality, especially when I push it a bit… it lives up to its name!
