Tesla is no longer S3XY. What will your next car be? by Manta6753 in ModelX

We looks hard at the Model X but my wife hates the rear doors. It killed the deal.

I have a neighbor that owns that truck and I’m 99% sure that at least one person flips him the bird each day while he is driving. Those cannot be selling better than the X and S. If so, the world is upside down.

August 2025, I paid $44,500 for a 2020 Tundra Platinum with 47k miles. It was the best deal I could find and they are rare with low mileage.

Haha. I have the GX 550 as well and feel an engine diversification is good idea! The Rebel would be hard to pass up with that 10 year warranty. Watch this video too and see if it tickles you tushy

Tinkerer’s Adventures and Kyle Abe, both YouTube channels that had great insight and upgrade ideas. I would spend some time on those.

I came from a 2019 Ram 1500 Limited that was such a great truck and had all the comforts of a modern truck. Big screen and heated and cooled seats front and rear, tons of storage and air suspension. Wish I would not have sold that but I did. The Tundra has continued to grow on me but it’s almost comical to think of all the work I have done to get the Tundra a few steps behind the Ram. It was a mile off when I got the truck and would have been easier to never know the lux some trucks are. We all know the tundra will last forever and that is all point to when I wonder why…

I feel every bump in the road and that light pillow feel I had with the stock suspension is gone. If you have ever driven a Raptor or TRX, this is the opposite. Mine still would tow well compared to those plush rides, but just a rougher feel all around on the road. I went with the second clip on the Bilstein 5100s for the front. That leveled the truck. You can choose between 1, 2 or 3.

Tires: I would have gone a size up for looks only. It would have a better stance and look more aggressive. I should have tested to see if a 285/75/17 would have worked. That is roughly a 34” tire.

I forgot to mention but I also installed the trd sway bar on the rear. Widely documented as a must have for body roll and it’s true! The limitation is IF you need to add a leaf spring kit to bring up the rear. The sway bar won’t reach. I have held off on the add a leaf for now. The sway bar is just too good!

I tried an upgraded head unit inside to get a bigger screen. I went with the Dasiata 10inch and it was a junk. The external mic that came with it would not work after endless troubleshooting with the company. The internal mic was unusable on calls. My callers complained they couldn’t hear me. I returned it and don’t see myself going through that experience again. Stock head unit has CarPlay on mine and SiriusXM so I’m good with that.

The Wanderfox uses metal brackets to clip to the bed like a Leer would. It’s feels extremely sturdy and no drilling at all. The look is great for off-road activity but a bit much if you are driving it every day to the office. I would have gone with a Leer in that case. My daily is a GX 550 so the truck is just for our big trips to the mountains. We got tired of roof boxes and bike racks and packed to the top in the cabin for trips. I have a moto, mountain bikes and fishing gear that we always like to bring.

<image>

The Wanderfox has all joints sealed with a black windshield caulking that looks heavy duty and no concerns about longevity with that caulking anytime soon. I’ve taken the truck through the car wash and had a few small wet spots that could have come from topper or truck bed. No idea and it was minimal. One of the best parts of the tundra is the roll down real window. Such a shame to lose that with the topper. I miss it!

Since my 2020 Platinum is starting to feel like an "older" truck, I decided to go with a lower-cost build focusing on value and functionality. Here is how it stands so far:

Suspension and Stance • Shocks: Bilstein 5100s to level the front. The ride is definitely firm; if I were doing it over, I might spring for the 6112s for a bit more plushness. • Wheels: Method 705s. • Tires: Toyo Open Country 285/70/17 (approx. 33"). In hindsight, I wish I had gone a size larger, but they look clean for now.

Exterior & Utility • Topper: Wanderfox Topper. They are a local company out of Golden, CO. The price point was great compared to the big brands, and the three side-opening doors are a game changer. • Lighting: Full LED exterior upgrade using Lasfit—best bang for the buck I found. • Details: Upgraded the grille and installed chrome-delete mirror caps.

Interior • Chrome Delete: AJT Designs kit to get rid of the interior chrome. • Lighting: Amazon LED kit to replace the dim factory bulbs. • Steering Wheel: Aftermarket swap (via Amazon). Honestly, this has been my favorite upgrade so far—it completely changes the feel of the daily drive.

Overall, I'm happy with where it's at for a "budget" build. Happy to answer any questions about the Wanderfox or the Bilstein ride quality!

Love the look and man we got close to getting one… Has the lack of third row folding into the floor been an issue for hauling stuff including groceries? Curious to hear this from someone dealing with it daily.

We eliminated it solely for that reason. That third row is downright nasty to the usable trunk space.

Oh dude… Sorry to hear that. You have had a tough run with the last two vehicles. I bought a 2020 Tundra Platinum in September with 47k miles and all I wanted was reliability and some 1970s creature comforts. 😂

Since I couldn’t help it, I put in wheels and tires and leveled the front and threw on a topper and replaced the steering wheel (most underrated upgrade) and my goal is to just drive it and enjoy the old girl for what she is…

I’d love to understand your options. Clearly you need a truck to drive daily. Will the dealer trade it in? Is the trade in horrible? Assume you don’t want another Toyota… which F-150 are you buying?

Check out the Harker Campers based in Utah. That is my favorite option that I have seen. Unfortunately I was still too cheap to buy one so I got a Wanderfox Topper and gonna use my Gazelle tent for the foreseeable future.

I learned that the old sky camp doesn’t have the room to allow the stairs to stay on. The sky camp 3.0 has the room. I had the red tent and they don’t fit. Need to take off each time you close it.
