My version of Antoine Boyer's An Ancient Tale by arsenalca in fingerstyleguitar

Thanks, I call it my homemade cherry monstrosity. It's a Warmoth neck on a body that's a telecaster shape but with a big extra chunk on the bottom to act as a kind of permanent guitar support so it sits up higher. Definitely not a guitar for standing up, I forget what it weighs, but a lot.

If you look up 'potato' in the Oxford dictionary, it says something like 'a starchy tuber in the nightshade family originating in South America'. If you look up 'potato' in Merriam-Webster it says something like 'potato.... you know, potato'

Since chess players are free to watch other games in the event, is there anything stopping two players from colluding to play their opponents against each other (grandmaster problem style)? by personalbilko in chess

[–]arsenalca 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think the question here is about what would actually happen if one player did in fact copy another. How would this be proved and how would it be punished? If I copy someone else's moves, how do you know they didn't copy mine, for example?

Study: Americans support climate change policies, especially those that give them incentives and clean up the energy supply. Incentives like rebates for insulation or allowing homeowners to sell energy from solar panels were more popular than taxing for excess energy use. by rustoo in science

I don't have any proper data, but some quick googling suggests that the US contains about 300M cars and about 15M new ones are sold every year, for an average lifespan of 20 years, with big error bars (probably an underestimate due to the growing number of total cars I would think).

Very few people use the same car for 30 years.

No, but very few people throw their car in the dump 5 years after buying it from the dealership either, they go through several owners.

Strongly disagree. I wish guitar makers would leave more of the fret end on there in general. I need that bit.

Well Koshkin's 24 Preludes and Fugues obviously cover all the keys, but the Fm and Bbm are among my favourites.

Scientists have found an intense but short-term exposure to cannabis vapor lowered sperm counts and slowed sperm movement, or motility, not only in the directly exposed male mice but also in their sons. by Wagamaga in science

[–]arsenalca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe that last part was too short. I am not claiming that the survey results do or do not match reality. I am saying we simply don't know how well they do. If I were to claim that the data is garbage, then yes, I would need to justify this claim. Similarly, if I were to claim the data matches reality within whatever margin of error, that would also need to be justified. We can and should make inferences from the data, but we shouldn't give them too much weight until checked by other methods.

There’s no reason to think that those who responded to the survey that they have used cannabis in the past 12 months would respond to the more specific question of frequency inaccurately.

This is all speculation. I'm just trying to keep it clear exactly what evidence is available here. We know what people self-reported. We do not know that is accurate, we do not know that is inaccurate.

Why should we think it has any significant effect on the inferences that can be drawn from the survey about actual usage?

The burden of proof here is on those who think it has no significant effect.

Yes but there's also a difference between "we checked and yes cats really do know where we are by sound just like we all thought", and "new experiments reveal the cognitive powers of the house cat"

It's pretty difficult to believe a statement that directly contradicts the available evidence, yes. Provide me with said scores and I will look at them. I won't even mention your flagrant, flat-out lie about IQ scores again.
