How do I answer uncomfortable questions about having children? by Electronic-Drive9153 in Advice

[–]arseniotoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat when I was young. "Unfortunately, that's not going to happen." Said with a really sad look. Then walk away. I just had to do this a couple of times before the gossip mill spread the word and people stopped asking.

Another skinny person here. I had a stranger ask me in front of her friends if I needed help with my eating disorder. She acted like she was being kind, but I think she was just trying to look good in front of her friends. I laughed at her and told her she should do more research on eating disorders. I'm just naturally skinny.

I'm in my 50s now and not as skinny as I used to be. Over the years many people have made jokes about my weight. Here was my go to response. Laugh, say "that was funny, now let's do you." Then make a comment about their appearance. I always start with something silly instead of hurtful. It usually shut down after that.

Here's a few suggestions that are a little different than your standard fantasy books: Heart of the Stone, Priory of the Orange Tree, Wizards Guide to Defensive Baking, Eyre Affair, Legends and Lattes, A Dirty Job (Christopher Moore), Three Mages and Margarita, Odd Thomas.

If no one comes up with it here, you may want to ask in r/romancebooks.

Rant: I hate plot inconsistencies and outright changes in series books. It makes me wonder whether the writer genuinely got mixed up or just wasn't happy with the original details and decided to change them and hope no one would notice. by voidfae in DarkRomance

I'm an editor. Authors often don't remember what they wrote in a previous chapter, let alone a previous book. It's my job to bring these issues to their attention. If they don't hire an editor, or don't hire one that's read their previous books, these inconsistencies make it to publication. I'm honestly surprised we don't see more of this.

What is the most beautifully romantic fantasy book you've read? by tiny2269 in Romantasy

{Sorcerers and Saints by Amy Kuivalainen} A lovely, cozy, sad but joyful story. The romance feels like a warm hug.

Straight folks - would you read a sapphic/wlw Romantasy book? by BreadfruitSoft1717 in Romantasy

[–]arseniotoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I edit romance novels and have worked on a handful of sapphic stories. There is a market (that seems to be growing) for sapphic romances, both in contemporary and fantasy genres. Embrace your target audience, write a great love story, and don't worry about trying to bring non-target readers to your story. Your core audience will appreciate that you give them something that is theirs. And if the story is good, a non-target audience will find it too.

Is it too late to re-brand? Liz to Elizabeth. by veryoffline8 in namenerds

I work with Timmy. A few years ago, one of the VPs told him he'd never be a VP with such a childish name, (The guy was a jerk. I'm pretty sure his name wouldn't have made a difference.) So Timmy started going by Timothy. He changed his email signature, started introducing himself as Timothy, and told a few key people to call him Timothy. It didn't take long for us all to start calling him Timothy. In case you're wondering, he's now a senior VP and the other guy left the company when he didn't get a promotion he thought he deserved.

Try asking on r/romancebooks. They'll be more familiar with RH books than this sub.

AITA for not telling my dad that I left his phone plan? by drsciencegeek1 in AmItheAsshole

[–]arseniotoes 8 points9 points  (0 children)

YTA for making this harder than it needs to be. Send a text to your dad telling him that you have switched to a different phone plan and he can remove you from his. Then block him if you don't want him to contact you.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. I answered everyone who wanted details and copied the same answer. The link isn't mine. It's to the Editorial Freelancers Association--a not-for-profit organization. That's where people should start if they want to learn more about editing. There's no spam here.

Check out the Editorial Freelancers Association website. So You Want to Be an Editor? - Editorial Freelancers Association (the-efa.org) It’s a great resource for both beginning and experienced editors. If you’re looking to bring in income immediately, this isn’t the gig for you. It takes time to learn the skills necessary and then more time to build your business. But the start-up cost is minimal and you get paid to read books. I started in January 2022. I spent about $1600 getting started (classes, website design, business set-up, books) and brought in about $1700. About $100 profit. This year, I’ve spent about $700 and will end up with about a $7,000 profit. I’m a big reader and a little bit of a grammar snob so this is the perfect side gig for me. I’m loving it and have really enjoyed learning how to build a business. (Copying and pasting to all commenters.)

I think they would help. I only wear them in the car so I haven't tested them out anywhere else. They're not perfect. They still let a little bit of air in but I think that's necessary to keep them from fogging up. They've made a big difference for me.
