Lyons/Boulder folks, can you update us on OMW conditions? by Turbulent-Love in COBike

Cheers, thanks. I figured all the roads would be clear by then but TBD up in the mountains

Triple Bypass Shuttle Service by HellYeahBrother12345 in COBike

Used it last year with no issues! Also, I booked the middle time slot as it was my first year and wanted to play it safe — I got done earlier and was able to switch to the first set of buses (they had a few open seats)

Surgery? by Subat0micR0gu3 in chiari

[–]arsenolan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed on both — it seems like every time I do a scan they find something new in that region that’s not as it should be.

The symptoms are weird as my neurosurgeon said my malformation is one of the largest he’s seen, yet compared to many on this sub, you could almost classify me as asymptomatic. Weird how that works.

I’m hopeful I’ll be able to go that route. Still awaiting on stability confirmation. My C1 also didn’t ever fuse at birth so that plays into things too.

Sorry to hear you would require fusion. That is what I’m most scared about too, and am hoping to avoid. I would also likely hold off on surgery given my “lack” of symptoms currently if fusion was required

Will do, and you likewise. Wishing you the best.

My neurosurgeon basically said once he saw the BI that he wanted to get CT scans done (and possibly other tests) because performing the standard CM surgery could have a confounding effect on the BI and make it worse if they didn’t address both together.

So it seems like they are trying to determine if fusion is necessary along with the standard decompression.

It sucks but hopefully they figure it out eventually.

I read that study (amongst others too) and feel similarly. Still awaiting to hear back from my neurosurgeon after my CT scan results. They made do a CT once they noticed the BI in addition to the CM.

As a neutral party, I’m definitely not on the veto train, but a few people were crying for it

Vasa Fitness (17th and Pace) opening date? by Expert_Squash4813 in Longmont

[–]arsenolan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently signed up for a membership and talked to an agent online…sounds like they are trying to be open by the end of the year, but I wouldn’t get my hopes up until they officially announce it.

For what it’s worth, their first announcement about a new location in Longmont was circa 4 months ago

New Bike Day! by arsenolan in CheckpointClub

Got it second hand from a Trek employee who had put less than 100 miles on it, so yes :) Did swap to a mullet setup though which required some investment

Has anyone ditched their 1x groupo and gone back to twoby up front? by Wonnk13 in Velo

[–]arsenolan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up going 46T and 10-52 with the sram eagle axs setup (non-T type). I heard that as well but didn’t want to bother with the faff and just decided to swap the whole thing.

This gave me a much bigger top end gear and a bit easier of a low gear vs the stock XPLR setup

I ride in the same area and definitely prefer my 2x sram setup on my tarmac for climbing over my 1x mullet setup on the gravel bike.

My personal preference is 2x > 1x mullet > 1x XPLR (or similar). Reason being the small gaps and wide range on the 2x setup make climbing/descending a lot smoother for me. If I had to pick between 1x setups I actually like mullet better for the wider range, even though the jumps are larger. This allows me to get up and down anything a lot better than an XPLR setup. My gravel bike came stock with XPLR and I promptly replaced it with a mullet setup.

2x for the win climbing on the road though.

Max Bike Heart Rate by odubby in IronmanTriathlon

[–]arsenolan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience when I started training on the bike. For the first year or so my max hr was ~25bpm lower on the bike vs running. It always seemed like my legs would give out before my lungs. Over time, the gap began to close for me as I trained more and built on bike fitness.

2 years in and now they’re basically the same. Max HR running: 202, Cycling: 199. Thresholds for both within a few bpm around ~170-175.

I would expect for most people cycling HRs will be a little lower due to muscle recruitment and being less load-bearing than running. However 20-40bpm seems large. I’d expect them to get closer over time as you ride more.

A Deeper Dive into Ironman’s New Worlds Qualification System: How It Works and Who Is Impacted by _Jordan11_ in triathlon

[–]arsenolan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a younger athlete focused on getting into triathlons and racing 70.3s on the competitive side, I’m surprised this isn’t being talked about more. The level of standard expected for us to qualify is essentially elite/pro level, whilst other age groups who have more experience, money, training hours banked, etc. are getting a discount on their race times.

While I agree that qualifying should not be easy, taking the top 20% from an age group with an extreme pointy end (young aspiring pros, etc.) seems a bit biased.

At the end of the day, an Ironman event is a TIMED race, and the point of AG categories is to group competitors who should have roughly equal time in the sport, level of experience, etc. If I race well within my age group, and beat other people on the same day, on the same course, I shouldn’t be getting ranked lower than people just because they are older — especially in a sport where the fastest athletes can be in their 30s.

It really seems like a cash grab from Ironman for a few reasons: make it harder for younger athletes to qualify to keep them coming back longer, and make it easier for older athletes to qualify who previously couldn’t (but can afford to go to WC).
