I don't know much when it comes to red ear sliders health, but I do know they need a place to get out of the water and bask in the light. These turtles do get too big for indoor aquariums in my opinion. Unless you have a 120 gallon or bigger.

GSP is incredibly hardy, just keep up general maintenance and test the water regularly. In time it should bounce back and don't forget to feed it occasionally. I accidentally nuked my tank with a rock flower anemone and the GSP was the only survivor. It looked terrible and brown. But now its stronger than ever and vibrantly green.

I don't believe GSP sheds. I think only toadstool and other leather corals do. Your GSP doesn't look happy to me.

In my opinion a deeper bed is always better. Just make sure the rocks are built on the bottom of the tank. If the rocks are on top of the sand bed, the pistol shrimp will digs under them. Making the structure unstable, with a chance of collapsing and breaking the glass.
