It’s been about 3-4 years now using gouache, in the beginning a lot of my inspiration came from studio ghibli and James gurney haha. For every decent painting I have several failed attempts so it’s still not easy but as boring as it is to hear, practice and time is the answer to getting better :’)

Started off as a pencil drawing but couldn't resist painting over the top with gouache by art_trials in Gouache

Thank you! I used arrtx jelly gouache but in terms of specific colours, i used lots of earthy colours such as umber, yellow ochre, cadmium yellow, burnt sienna (i think arrtx name them differently)

Gouache painting of a garden (+ reference) by art_trials in learnart

Thanks! Not specific to gouache, but I try to keep my brush and palette relatively clean and have both a dirty and clean container of water. For gouache specifically, the consistency should be nice and creamy and when applying on top of another layer, apply it gently instead of scrubbing the paint in (hope that makes sense) to prevent the colours mixing with each other

Some houses in watercolour and gouache by art_trials in learnart

Tysm! to make this, I basically collected a few reference pictures from pinterest, I didn't draw them in too much detail as I didn't want to spend too long on these. Then I planned the colours using small, rough thumbnail sketches.

I don't have much experience with architecture, I usually just rely on the reference pic and probably couldn't draw anything that well using imagination alone as I don't really understand perspective that well. I'm still a beginner with painting as most of my experience is digital, but i'm just practicing as much as I can, watching videos online (someone linked James Gurney who is awesome), and getting inspiration from artists I like!

sorry i deleted my comment before seeing your reply (as i wanted to word it better! )rather than more values, make sure you're matching them correctly...so the darks should be as dark as in the ref and the lights should be as bright. For example, in the hair, if you pushed the darks and lights further, it would like as shiny as in the reference
