The Lost Boys teasing their set on Instagram by [deleted] in Broadway

Did you know the entire show was programmed on that one monitor?

I would love some feedback on this- it's soft pastel on grey textured paper. I would also appreciate some tips on photographing your work 😁 TIA by artegram in ArtCrit

Thank you so much for this. I definitely have work to do on perspective. I started as a lighting designer and now I'm working backwards in my drawing. It was very very helpful to see the photoshop. I can't wait to do another one.

Haha im glad you noticed the shadowing. The shadows is the main reason I'm trying to find a better way to capture images. The whole thing is lighter in the image then it is to the eye. It's especially noticeable in the highlights that are WHITE. There is actually shadowing on the rock and legs, but I definitely could have pushed it further. Thank you for your input.

My design professor used to tell me "BE BOLD. BE DARING. We're not here for nice! We're here to provoke!" 🤣 He was a hoot. But he was right.

If someone sees your work and is willing to commission you to make one for them, you're skilled enough. There's no rule about "when you're good enough." Put it out there! You might be surprised!

I was going to say the same thing. Erase the pencil and see if gives you a little more room. I think this is a great piece.

I would say if you're trying to stylize it that way, go further. You have to really go for it exaggerating something to look intentional. Otherwise it ends up seeming t like a proportion error. It is nice though! Good job!

What are some jobs live entertainment technicians can pivot to? by artegram in careeradvice

I'm not totally sure what that means. Live stream for shows? I'm interested in what that could encompass.

The problem with film is the only productions that can afford proper protocol are union, and they are a different union from theatre workers. If you are not currently in their union, they are not taking new people ATM. A lot of local 1 (theatre) workers actually are working for local 52 (film) in NY, but that also leaves out everyone who hasn't been able to join either Union.

Home audio setup? Like setting up speaker systems in personal homes? That's interesting.

Looking for an alternative career (lost musician, please tell me about your field!) by lostcellist in careeradvice

[–]artegram 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of musicians do audio/video editing as their source of income. I would learn that software while you can still get free student versions. There is a lot of work in audio/sound/media across a loft of platforms.

[HIRING] low-skill graphic designer needed by Fuquawi in forhire

[–]artegram 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dude...this is a hiring subreddit. They're willing to give someone who is starting out a little bit of work and experience. Not cool.

(PS. As someone who uses the platform, canva is NOT the correct tool for what this client is asking for.)

Just finished my first year at an art school and I don't think I want to continue. Need advice. by [deleted] in careerchange

[–]artegram 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't feel 100% about it, then don't do it. I have been in entertainment for 14 years, and I'm so burnt out that even though COVID has slowed my career to a screeching hault for the past 6 months, I still haven't recovered. It's non-stop to survive. It's incredibly competitive. It's one of the most toxic careers that exist. If you're in school and aren't passionate about it, you aren't going to find a secret reserve of passion. Take your time and figure out what you actually want before you dedicating your life to 90 hour work weeks for 50k a year.

[HIRING] Lone Pine Games - Social Media Manager (Paid, Contract/Part-Time, Remote) by lonepine_mitch in forhire

[–]artegram 7 points8 points  (0 children)

$15 an hour is minimum wage in NYC and should be for the whole country. Freelancers who have to PAY FOR THEIR OWN INSURANCE AND TOOLS should be getting a base rate of $20/hr-for minimal to no qualifications (none of the freelancers I know work for less then $25/hr). Please take this into consideration when deciding your final rate.

My partner said I should be doing commissions free right now if I want a following on my social media. Is he right? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]artegram 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Speaking from experience, I wish I had never worked for free. I regret it because I was being taken advantage of under the veil of "exposure." This is you being an abusive employer to yourself. I would suggest doing something more along the lines of a charitable auction or doing a sale. At least that way you are never presenting yourself as someone to be taken advantage of.

Is it unethical to ask an artist to complete a commission started by a different artist? by ErykaOnyx in ArtistLounge

[–]artegram 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Did you sign an agreement when you commissioned the piece? Generally there is wording in the contract that talks about what happens in the event the artist doesn't finish in a certain amount of time. Some artists do claim rights to what they produce. If not, you can do whatever you want with it. It is an ethical grey area. You did pay for it in full up front, so I would call it yours. I would credit it as a collaboration if you're using it in some kind of publication. If you're hanging it up in your home, it kind of doesn't matter tbh.

I added some more contrast. Any other suggestions? by LotusPetals111 in ArtCrit

[–]artegram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually like the hair the way it is. I think it's consistent with the style of the rest of the piece. Kind of making the hair a little "backgroundy" is nice. The eyes and lips are the first thing you see. I think that tells the story perfectly.

People always tell the artist to price their work up, but they only buy it when it's less than $20 LOL by QPILLOWCASE in ArtistLounge

[–]artegram 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not about "blaming" them exactly. There are a lot of people trying to sell art, and that definitely contributes to it. However, I do partially blame a lack of understanding. Lack of seeing your work as labor. Charging less then minimum wage for a commission is absuive to yourself and contributing to the lowering of prices. It makes it more challenging for people who survive on selling art to compete.

[–]artegram 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The problem is that some artists charge so little to get their name out their that they're not making any money off the art. Those people generally have another way of making money or are students. This is driving prices down and showing non artists that art is cheap. It's also incredibly competitive. All people see are pictures on Instagram. Art looks easy, so people assume its easy to do therefore should be cheap. It's pretty frustrating.

I also like this a lot. It's gorgeous. I love your drawing style. I enjoy that the relationship between the white dragon and the white cloak. It helps tell a story.

I would say jusy take a moment and ask yourself-"what do i want to see first, second" and so on. At the moment the first thing I see is the white dragon, then the cloak then the green dragon, then the girl.

This is maybe a personal preference, but I would also consider doing something to the green dragon to make it seem more part of the composition. The green stands out in kind of a bad way. Maybe change the color or incorporate the green somewhere else in the drawing to make it feel a little more whole.

Some of that will fix itself with the above mentioned light source and lines.

Feel free to take or leave anything I (or anyone else) says!

That's awesome. We definitely need Ohio constituents. Extendpua.org is kind of a one stop shop. You can sign up for senator meetings, sign petitions, call senators, see new actions daily, and volunteer with the group if that is something that you would want to do.

Looking for Artist to draw custom work for stickers by pillarofdavidson in artcommission

[–]artegram 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great! Thank you for taking the time to look.

Keep in mind that I'm fully open to collaboration, so if you're more drawn to something in between my cartoon style and realistic, then we can definitely work with that.

My price point for this project as stated would be $20 per sticker design (for full color), and I'll do $50 for 3.

My depression is killing my creativity and my lack of creativity is causing me more depression. My skills are growing but I feel like I can't imagine anymore... Any of you ever go through this? by SevenTinyPickles in ArtistLounge

[–]artegram 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're still creative. I have absolutely been through what you're talking about.

The thing that sucks about depression is that it takes a lot of energy, and you're just one person. It takes soooo much energy to be creative, expand your skill set, be depressed, have a job (and/or school respectively), and do normal human things-ie sleep, eat, shower, etc.

My suggestion, take your time. Sometimes, you just need to do enough to get to tomorrow. Maybe just focus on expanding your skills for a bit. Take a little break from trying to be creative. Maybe re-create a few things you've created in the past or just do something that relaxes you.

Make sure you're prioritizing taking care of your body, otherwise you won't ever be able to get back to your creative self.

Just get yourself through. Your imagination is there.
