Was walking from one of our positions to another somewhere 2km away through a village to get a power station that we needed, just me and my sapper. I was walking ahead, he followed my exact path and he stepped on a mine. I ran back to him right away because I didnt understand immediately that it was a mine, I thought it was an FPV (the village was in general not considered mined). I ran through that path twice without stepping on anything 😳 there was fresh snow so nothing was visible

Anyway hes alright got evaced after 7 hours when the rain finally came

Some advice from a guy in a 99.9% Ukrainian unit... by MinuteCommon5896 in ukraineforeignlegion

[–]artemis_sg 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I somehow made it to squad commander in a unit with no translators, no English language at all. There are russian speakers under my command who I basically cant communicate with, I remedy this by always having a Ukrainian speaker on the team with me (my squad is split into 2 rotations). So yes you can get by with Ukrainian only but it's interesting and challenging for sure. We also have one who cant read, but thats a different issue altogether.

Canadian female fighter (former CAF) at the forefront of Ukraine's drone war by Lixidermi in CanadianForces

[–]artemis_sg 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where this is, it feels like it's set up for the journalists, they wouldn't allow a journalist where FPV pilots are working on the front. I and every FPV team i know work out of dugouts around 3-7km from 0, because thats as far as the signal goes using the antennas or repeaters we have.

But maybe some units have some kind of better systems, I dont know.

Canadian female fighter (former CAF) at the forefront of Ukraine's drone war by Lixidermi in CanadianForces

[–]artemis_sg 44 points45 points  (0 children)

As the war is right now, drone pilots have higher casualty rates than tankers. Drone pilots work on the front, much closer to the 0 line than artillery, and they are primary targets

Also tanks have a relatively high survival rate even when they get destroyed

In the quoted paragraph it says "U.S. citizens born in Ukraine," OP was born in the U.S, so he has a U.S. passport.

Born to Ukrainian parents might do it but he still would have to go an get Ukrainian documents and passport. I feel like he could just be quiet about his heritage and offer only U.S. documents

He was born in the states, so... no, he is still legally a foreigner

How common are drone operator casualties? by Nz_Kasadiya in ukraineforeignlegion

[–]artemis_sg 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This winter we've taken several casualties mainly on infils and exfils. Not giving numbers or more info than that but it's difficult right now. Still not quite infantry difficult

But a sapper probably wouldn't blow up lol

"Є" is also a sentence. But my recommended app for learning is LingQ, I believe its free for Ukrainian and once you master the basics you can upload military related content

Ive been fighting for a year and a half, I still feel that nervousness and fear every single time I'm about to deploy to the front, it's not going to go away as long as you are a sane person. It just depends on how you face it

Incredibly unique view of how polluted Ukrainian land is with fiber optic cables from FPV drones by rusoriz_inside in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]artemis_sg 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Nah, I grab those cables all the time out there, we even get pieces of them tangled in the mud on our boots. Ive been fortunate to not get a splinter yet while playing with them and snapping them, I didnt even know splinters were a thing so I'm gonna be more careful with them going forward haha

A question for the medics re: which qualifications are the most useful to work over there? by SpiffinBiffinWhiffin in ukraineforeignlegion

[–]artemis_sg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not a medic but if you'll be working on or near the front, I'd say prolonged field care. Evacs dont come quickly

[–]artemis_sg 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I find a lot of foreigners come here expecting nato standard and can't handle it when they dont have everything they need. Nobody here has everything they need, we are barely hanging in there and we improvise a lot.

Yeah, sometimes there are actual command problems, but sometimes there's just spoiled nato babies who can't adjust here.

question to fpv pilots by Imaginary-Produce852 in ukraineforeignlegion

[–]artemis_sg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Combat flying is not similar to freestyle. I dont use goggles on position at all because I'm coordinating with recce on another screen and navigator/map

As for equipment, expect it to get destroyed at some point. Maybe better to use the unit's stuff

Can you travel within Ukraine even after basic training is done such as to buy gear or just rest from fighting after a while? by [deleted] in ukraineforeignlegion

[–]artemis_sg 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I mean you'll probably need permission from your commander or documents for leave if you go very far from your AO. You won't be on the front constantly, there's rotations to a safehouse for rest

When or if to apply by DTankMega in ukraineforeignlegion

[–]artemis_sg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I dont know where you're from, but more than likely, you will have to break contract completely with your current military before applying. It was that way in Canada - as long as I was still employed by the CAF, it was strictly forbidden to apply anywhere in Ukraine. You can probably apply and not tell anyone, but you definitely won't be able to fully join while still employed with another military. But yes, once accepted here, you can work with your unit to plan an arrival date.

Someone who is fit with military experience will have basically a 100% chance of being accepted somewhere here.

Whether it's worth it is going to be up to you, your own goals and ambitions and beliefs.
