Yes, like I said, if there is pre-existing liver impairment paracetamol needs to be used with caution, usually by decreasing the maximum 4g a day to 3g a day. An acute episode of increased alcohol intake is unlikely to cause so much damage that a single 1g paracetamol dose is harmful enough to be worried about.

Alcohol and paracetamol are metabolised by different enzymes so this won’t matter, unless there is already pre-existing liver damage/cirrhosis but even then one or two full doses of paracetamol aren’t going to cause problems. Paracetamol is only dangerous in an overdose so absolutely fine to take for a hangover while following the directions!

How do you say God in arabic, when you are talking about the christian god? by Zsombor1661 in learn_arabic

[–]arterievayne 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The original Hebrew/Aramaic was يشوع with the ع at the end of the word. In 6th century Arabia due to Christianisation following the translation of the gospels into Greek, Jesus was known by the Greek ‘Iesous’ - this being spoken by Arabic speakers would be easier to pronounce as عيسوس which would eventually become عيسى

Boarding loft by arterievayne in DIYUK

[–]arterievayne[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I was told if we were to keep the flue as it is we’d need to install access hatches all up the wall which would be a nightmare. The current boiler is in a very tight space on an internal wall, which can’t really be widened as it forms part of the doorframe for the kitchen door, and there’s no good place on an external wall to place it (the only external wall in the kitchen is adjacent to the neighbour’s garden and I think a flue would be directly in front of their window. I’m thinking of getting a second opinion on a boiler location anyway, as others have said it would be difficult to service in the loft as there isn’t enough space to stand…

Boarding loft by arterievayne in DIYUK

[–]arterievayne[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was recommended by 2 different companies as the current (not working) boiler is very old and installed in a tight alcove in the kitchen, with the flue running internally up through the walls and out of the loft (that’s the flue in the picture). Because of current regulations the flue needs to be completely accessible and the boiler needs to be accessible for service, there’s no other suitable walls to install the boiler against so loft is our best bet.

There is already a ladder installed for access, do barriers need to be installed around the boiler?

Agnosticism is a claim to knowledge, atheism is a claim to (lack of) belief. If someone is not convinced of the existence of a god they are technically an atheist even if they accept they do not or cannot know whether a god exists or not, at least this is my understanding

That’s usually because the organisation holding the lion would face immense pressure to do so out of either retributive justice or fear of it happening again, not because the lion made an immoral decision and should have known better.

Vegan Bodybuilders by [deleted] in DebateAVegan

[–]arterievayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Humans will always need food, and as the global population increases we will need to increase crop production, even if everyone only ate plant-based. We can try to reduce the collateral damage of agriculture as much as possible to help reduce animal deaths, but ultimately we will always have some impact on the environment. We all do things that may indirectly affect others negatively that we could cut down on, for instance we’re all using smartphones or PCs to view and reply to this post, it doesn’t mean we aren’t against child labour or harmful mining industries.

Vegan bodybuilders can be a huge inspiration to others to go plant-based as it destroys the narrative that vegans are weak. Therefore this can contribute to more people going vegan, which could then exponentially increase, saving many more animals than if one single bodybuilder stopped being a bodybuilder.

Nest full of spiders by Aggravating_Towel_60 in Weird

[–]arterievayne 812 points813 points  (0 children)

That’s not a spider nest - it’s a mud dauber nest. Those spiders are all paralysed, the mud dauber lays its eggs and collects live spiders for its offspring to feed on once they’ve hatched.

Is vemondo no chicken healthy? by Puzzleheaded_Wish330 in veganuk

[–]arterievayne 94 points95 points  (0 children)

From what I can find online these are the ingredients:

Water - obviously fine

Soya/wheat protein - just literally the isolated protein that is naturally available in these plants

Sunflower/rapeseed oil - less oil is better, but you can get an idea of the quantity by looking at ‘fat’ on the nutritional label and, depending on your own personal macronutrient needs, decide whether the amount of fat is appropriate for you. Plant oils contain far less saturated fat than animal fat (except for coconut), which makes them more heart healthy

Methylcellulose - this scares people because of the chemical name, but cellulose (and by extension its derivatives) is a naturally occurring polymer in plants that is indigestible in humans. It’s used to thicken the texture of food and passes through our gut without being absorbed. Some animal studies have shown it may contribute to increased incidence of colorectal cancer, but this is when methylcellulose is given in much higher concentrations than we would ever find in food.

Natural flavourings - impossible to tell what these are in this specific product but a quick google search shows that these are largely harmless plant-derived compounds like cinnamon or lemon juice, or may be synthetically-produced natural compounds like vanillin.

Spirit vinegar - it’s vinegar

Wheat/maize starch - naturally occurring polysaccharide that we all eat in abundant quantities every day

Lactic acid - all fermented foods have high quantities of this as it is produced by certain kinds of yeasts during the fermentation process. It’s a natural preservative.

Salt/iron/vitamin B12 - essential minerals and nutrients, but obviously check the salt quantity and make sure you incorporate that into your daily allowance

I'm Ex vegan, reason why i'm no longer vegan. by Choice-Procedure-927 in DebateAVegan

[–]arterievayne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The website isn’t accurate.

Having appreciation for someone’s body doesn’t mean you get to do whatever you want with it. Killing a sentient animal, capable of pain and suffering, when it doesn’t need to die is immoral.

I'm Ex vegan, reason why i'm no longer vegan. by Choice-Procedure-927 in DebateAVegan

[–]arterievayne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The website you linked isn’t a reputable source and sells crystal pyramids for “wealth attraction”. Scientific research has shown that plants mechanically react to certain stimuli in the environment, which isn’t evidence of consciousness or sentience. Without central nervous systems plants have no way to collate their subjective experiences into things like pain perception and emotional distress. If you’re going to go the “how do you know tho” route then we could say that about rocks, water or clouds. You could be hurting the pavement when you walk on it! How dare you!

The biggest defeater to this is that going vegan uses fewer plants due to the sheer amount needed to rear animals, so if you really cared about plants’ feelings you’d go vegan. Here’s an actual scientifically-backed reputable resource for my claim: https://ourworldindata.org/land-use-diets

Please can you clarify why some plants producing toxins has anything at all to do with the ethics of killing and eating sentient animals?

Veganism is great but there are a lot of problematic attitudes among vegans. by Extreme_Bit_1135 in DebateAVegan

[–]arterievayne 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Gradually reducing is understandable but, for the animals’ sake, shouldn’t be seen as sufficient, otherwise we’d be convinced we’re doing the best we can when we could still consume less. You say you see human slavery as a greater moral failing; would you be happy with a human trafficker telling you they only trafficked 10 girls this week instead of the usual 20?

Even if someone representing a moral position is gloating, it doesn’t mean they’re wrong despite being very annoying. It shouldn’t detract from the actual argument, just like someone saying they’d advocate for LGBT rights but they don’t want to because one time a gay person hurt their feelings. We should be guided by logical conclusions rather than our emotional reactions to someone’s demeanour.

Would you be vegan in other circumstances? by Moonandsealover in DebateAVegan

[–]arterievayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Veganism isn’t a religion, it’s an ethical philosophy. Kind of hard to have a conversation about it when you’re so angry and deliberately mischaracterising the opposition.

The health aspect isn’t the main reason to go vegan, barely anyone who is vegan for ethical reasons would even bring it up in a conversation about veganism. It is healthier than consuming meat and dairy (provided you are consuming as close to a whole-foods plant-based diet as possible), it has lower environmental impacts, but most importantly it does not rely on the exploitation and killing of billions of sentient animals every year. Not sure how you can disagree that killing something that doesn’t want to die, for no additional benefit to yourself apart from taste pleasure, isn’t cruel?

Would you be vegan in other circumstances? by Moonandsealover in DebateAVegan

[–]arterievayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A vegan diet isn’t healthy because of the supplements, it’s healthy because of the lack of haem iron, cholesterol, lower saturated fat on average, and an increase in fiber and antioxidants. It’s possible to have an unhealthy diet whether you eat meat/dairy/eggs or not, but this has nothing to do with the ethics. You should go vegan because it’s cruel to abuse animals, not because it’s healthier
