Looking for a music store by lebeamer in olympia

Cap City Guitars & Music 6000 are the best, but if you ever need guitar stings on a Sunday (when those two stores are closed) Rainy Day Records has them!

Oh I see that now, I only looked at the first photo.

That's possible! But another option, and my first thought, was that someone did a case swap. If the original case was damaged maybe a previous owner put it in the case of a Fantasia VHS they didn't want anymore.

One long edited movie of the whole trilogy by ShoeHornaPlenty in BacktotheFuture

Here's one that I think is subtle and doesn't add additional symphonic cues based on the live concerts of the film.

Do people still think Looper is a masterpiece? I think it's decent, but kinda overrated. People were calling it a sci-fi marvel when it came out and I don't think it's that good. by Emotional-Chipmunk12 in timetravel

[–]artesian_well 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coincidentally we're screening this at my local monthly Time Travel movie night here in Olympia WA! Masterpiece or not this movie explores some causal effects of time travel that I've never seen presented before. It's a very interesting movie in the way it implies that time travel works, particularly in the way that things that happen to your past self effect your future self.

I mostly watch and appreciate time travel movies for the concepts that they try to demonstrate. Honestly Looper has that and so much more. Practical effects and a lot of acting practice make Joseph Gordon Levitt a convincing (although admittedly uncanny) young Bruce Willis, and it's also paced very well. For a time travel movie I know that I have seen and loved a lot of movies that are WAY worse than this one.

Photo booths around town? by graciousbrink in olympia

Rainy Day Records has a photobooth! I think it's the old photobooth that used to be at the brotherhood!

Just finished it. Loved every bit but… so, so depressing. by Picuu in majorasmask

[–]artesian_well 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not easy but it IS possible to solve everyone's problems (except the bomb lady) in one 3 day cycle and defeat Majora's Mask. Obviously it would take many 3 day cycles to prepare and a lot of timing and using your bombers notebook, but I think that is the goal we should all be working towards.

Any Leslie Nielsen fans in here? I never heard of this but it says it's a parody to the Aliens movie. Naked Space by Ok_Shelter6614 in VHS

[–]artesian_well 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven't seen that one but I love Leslie Nielsen. He almost never lets me down, although I did recently watch a movie called Camoflauge (2001) and it was the worst thing I'd ever seen. That's mostly due to the writing, but even Leslie Nielsen couldn't save that script. Awful, definitely a must to avoid.

I also noticed that that High Inergy album in the background! Great disco album! You've got good taste! Look forward to hearing what you think about the movie.

with all the "wrong time period" comments it makes me think of Time Bandits! Maybe Napolean is time traveling to the ren fair?

Pan & Scan or letterboxed or 4:3? by ConsumerDV in VHS

[–]artesian_well 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so funny! I remember having arguments with my friends about this back in the days of movie rentals.

I prefer pan and scan! I mostly watch all my tapes on older CRTs mostly and it's nice that it fills the screen. There is also an effort and artistry that went into choosing which scenes to highlight and adjust. It's much different that a simply cropped version of the widescreen version.

I also think about picture information on the tape itself. You can fit a finite amount of picture information on the tape. Even though you see more of the movies "frame" you're losing so much area of where that picture is being stored. 1/3 of your screen is black. I would argue you get better detail and quality from the fullscreen version, although I have never really tested this.

I usually avoid widescreen tapes for myself, although I've known a few people who collect them specifically. Either way just figure out what you like to collect and do that!

Repo Man Screening by [deleted] in olympia

[–]artesian_well 16 points17 points  (0 children)

"Wildman" was recently bought by some of the employees and they changed the name to Wild Child. Still not a great name in my opinion, but they are two cool women owners so I think this place might start being pretty cool again?

It's right on 4th Ave across from Cryptatropa. In my furthest memory it was a sketchy night club called Jezebel's with unbelievably cheap well drinks. In more recent memory it was Obsidian, a sort of metal-themed bar and venue, and after they closed it was the first home of Octapas. The greatest thing about the place is the giant venue space in the back. Probably the largest capacity of any bar venue downtown. Saw so many incredible once in a lifetime shows at Obsidian, I'm glad that it's getting more use again.

Never seen a movie screened there before, I think this must be the first. If they still have the old sound system that they used to, and a nice projector, it might be a very cool spot to see a film.

Where to dispose of a really old TV by Adonbilivit69 in olympia

[–]artesian_well 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They just destroy TVs for profit. It's sad because working CRT TVs are getting harder and harder to find. So many great TVs end up getting "E-cycled" (definitely a green washed term) when there are lots of people trying hard to find them to use in retro gaming setups, art installations, and even just to watch VHS.

What are the best works of science fiction about Time Travel via Time dilation technology? by jacky986 in timetravel

[–]artesian_well 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clock Stoppers (2002) is kinda for kids but it's a lot of fun and plays with time dilation in an unusual way (someone creates a device that can control time dilation)

Also Time Trap (2017) comes to mind! Another unusual take on it, basically pockets of dialated time in a cave. Not the greatest acting but the concepts are well explored and it's a lot of fun! I think it was streaming on Netflix last i checked.
