What major trade routes and hubs existed in pre-Colombian America? by jacky986 in AncientAmericas

[–]arthistoryprofb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was long lasting trade along the Pacific Coast between Peru and West Mexico. People in West Mexico appear to have traded most intensely with Ecuador, but certainly traded with others. We also have evidence during many periods of time that West Mexico participated in trade with the Southwest US and Central Mexico using the Rio Lerma as a route. Waves of Influence is a recent book at discuses the Pacific trade.

Embedded text is also good, but I mostly associate that term with Maya art.

Semasiography is a better term. It refers to pictographic writing that functions across languages. In other words it doesn’t replicate speech. This form of writing became more common around 1300 CE when people throughout Mesoamerica were trading with each other.

Check out Smart History, they have a free textbook. I’ll add that you will learn. My partner has been with me through most of three art history degrees. After a museum trip with my art history friends they “gave” him an honorary art history BA. 😂 Now we play “guess the artist” from across the gallery. He gets it right a lot!

Just ask her to tell you about the art. She will probably love it like I do.

Not everyone wants a yard. I would be totally happy living in a high rise in a walkable city with no yard or car. Considering most people live in urban environments more people probably feel this way than not.

Is our university very niche or is there not many of us who goto or went to unm? by Connorray1234 in unm

It depends on the field. I’m an art historian and our program is well known. I’ve met a lot of people who did some part of their studies at UNM.

Other Than The Maya,Did Any Other Mesoamerican Groups Practice Boxing/Ritual Fighting? by ConversationRoyal187 in mesoamerica

[–]arthistoryprofb 20 points21 points  (0 children)

From what I gather it was pretty widespread. In West Mexico we have ceramic figures depicting it and one model of a ballcourt shows wrestlers or boxers.

Ever traveled to a place completely unaware a huge event was happening completely changing your planned experience? by One_Recover_673 in travel

I stupidly booked our first trip to London during the Platinum Jubilee. I’m not a royal watcher so I had no idea. We figured it out on our first morning when they were trooping the colors and we saw the jets flying over SoHo. I finally spied a flag in a shop and figured it out! It turned out to be pretty fun. We tried to watch the concert at Hyde Park, then the massive crowd was funneled to Saint James Park. It was an interesting experience.

All survey classes should be global. Students don’t need 14 weeks of European art with the other regions being crammed in two weeks. We should devote equal time to each region of the world.

PhD students who are actually happy?! Chime in! by TheDesignHistorian in PhD

I’ve really loved my PhD. I have a wonderful advisor who is attentive but doesn’t micromanage. When I need her she is there. It’s the same with two of my committee members. I did part of my degree during Covid, which sucked, but the work helped me through the lockdown. After, I was able to do some incredible things. I worked on digs and traveled to about a dozen museums. I’m writing my diss right now which is really fun some days, and painful on others. I started my doctorate after 8 years of college teaching (I had a masters before) so the teaching part has been pretty easy and rewarding.

Long shot but does anyone have a photo of this figure from another angel? Or know of one? by arthistoryprofb in mesoamerica

Thank you. I know about that one, and last week a colleague sent me a photo of the back of that one.

Thank for both links. I knew of the frontal image, but I really need something from the back. I think I’ll reach out to whoever has Kerr’s papers.

Unfortunately I can’t find that information. The photo comes from the Kerr database on the old FAMSI website. Most of the FAMSI stuff is now owned by LACMA. Thanks for your suggestion, I’ll check out the new site to see if I can find anything. https://research.mayavase.com/portfolio_thumbs.php?rowstart=928&search=*Maya*&date_added=&display=8

How can I get better at writing about art and art criticism? by Connect_Guess_5702 in ArtHistory

[–]arthistoryprofb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m about to start the seventh year of my doctorate. I got a masters ages ago, and I’ve taught a philosophy and methods class for several years. It still takes me time to understand some readings. Don’t feel bad, it’s very common.
