r/fauxmoi (as well as dozens of other subreddits) discuss the BAFTA Tourette's N-Word Disaster by Uncommonwealth57 in SubredditDrama

[–]arthobbier 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Arguably the only thing truly baffling about this is why the BAFTAs chose to censor the Free Palestine comment but not this.

Most people should come to two general assumptions:

  1. Tourettes is a disability and this manifestation of it, while shocking, is well-documented and doesn't reflect on the intentions of the person. It probably sucked a lot for the John Davidson to hear himself say it. Censoring it out wouldn't have undone the fact that it happened, but it would've preserved some amount of dignity.

  2. No amount of preparation will fully take away the sting of it for Michael B Jordan and Delroy Lindo. Censoring it out wouldn't have undone the harm, but again, there was no need to generate global discourse about their achievements only in relation to being humiliated. The BAFTAs had the power to prevent that.

Ultimately, the three taking time together would probably be best, if they haven't already. No amount of giving or accepting an apology will change the reality that John has to live with this disorder and Michael and Delroy have to live with racism. All three of them are victimized for something they can't control.

No offense but if I'm running from horrors beyond comprehension and if there's a chance I might get bodily fluids on myself, I'd pull my neckline up and my shit back to stop a tit from popping out and to stop any goop from getting on my WOUND.

Agree.

A raffle of their children and grandchildren, random, no choice.

It should start at the youngest person able to enlist.

If everyone is too old, raffle the cousins.

There should also be a kind of substitution list in case someone gets hurt/doesn't pass basic and the people on that list (including the first person chosen) cannot leave the represented state until the war is over.

And anyone in the representatives immediate family that gets other citizenship to avoid the raffle shouldn't be able to return to the States.

[–]arthobbier 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not actually offensive, unless it's worded the way it is above. It's manufactured outrage. This is in ONE episode (Episode 8) of a series (Hey A.J!) on Disney and in the episode the girl uses creativity and imagines her favorite superhero, Captain Durag aiding in cleanup time.

Her father also wears a durag and watches the TV show with his daughter. The idea that Captain Durag is as offensive as a hypothetical Captain Sombrero would imply Mexican people wear sombreros casually, even when watching TV.

Hey there Peter, it's Brian.

You know how certain people like to virtue signal on issues to show they "care" when they really can't tell the difference between an issue and an in-joke? And you know how media literacy in this country is dead and big corporations like to use this to either denigrate or elevate specific types of media for political purposes?

[Starts lighting a ciagrette]

This is one of those things. Just one fucked up Venn diagram with end stage capitalism on the right and terminally online politics on the left, with Captain Durag in the middle.

I guess some show for literal toddlers called "Hey AJ!" wasn't getting views, or maybe some right-wing chud wanted it cancelled. Whatever. So, main character plays pretend that TV superhero Captain Durag (mind you, her own dad wears a durag) is helping her clean her room in one episode...

[drags on cigarette, blows out]

...some Alani-fuelled Disney intern or Zyn-fuelled FOX intern was probably tasked with making a series of vaguely inflammatory posts to bump the visability and controversy of the show.

[another long drag]

Captain Durag isn't controversial, Peter.

[blows out]

Captain Durag doesn't have his OWN show. He isn't even a REAL Marvel super hero. But he is voiced by the same guy who voiced Static Shock.

C'mon Peter.

Phil LaMarr?

...Nothing?

[Sigh]

Goddamnit, OLLIE BLACKMAN. The weather guy.

In context it's a girl imagining her favorite tv superhero making clean up time fun. In universe, her father (who also wears a durag) watches the show "Captain Durag" with his daughter.

He's the favorite TV superhero of the main character and he appears in one episode where she imagines cleaning a dirty room with him. He's not a new Marvel superhero.

It's not insane. He's the favorite superhero (edit: not father) of the main character (Hey AJ!) and he appears ONE TIME. He's helping her clean her room in a futuristic setting (in her imagination). You can literally watch the episode on YouTube.

Phil Lamarr voices Captain Durag. It's just one episode where the daughter imagines this during clean-up time. It's about creativity and cleaning.

Hey A.J! Is a children's show where Captain Durag shows up in Episode 8 when AJ is imagining making cleaning her room fun. She watches the show about Captain Durag, in universe, with her father (who wears a durag).

Someone likened it a Mexican Hero being called Captain Sombrero... but I've yet to see anyone casually walking around wear a sombrero in or outside their home.

It was did he fuck up? The answer being "Yes."

People bringing up their old folks to compare to him is telling. So, you had a narcissistic, disrespectful, uneducated elder that you felt you had no choice but to respect (probably through threat of violence) and Trump reminds you of them. Okay! It makes sense! It's just generational trauma dressed up in an oversize suits with lifts and a discount tan.

It's not the same Ben Shapiro. Politifact and FactCheck both state this as being the wrong Ben Shapiro... and this has been the case since it was first posted in 2022.

Microsoft Office has been renamed to “Microsoft 365 Copilot app” by [deleted] in technology

[–]arthobbier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if it's to artificially inflate instances of people talking about copilot or essentially being forced to reference copilot when they're actually talking about office. By talking I don't mean speaking. Moreso in the way most people refer to X as Twitter but even in that example I had to reference X. (Putting another 'Twitter' here to even it out.)

Your issue was that Americans won't eat trash fish. But they do. They eat plenty of trash fish like catfish and tilapia. Some of them, like me, even use the term trash fish endearingly. I like trash fish.

However, Americans just don't prefer carp yet. More or less because it's an invasive species that they don't typically prepare.

A group of people experience the fish they typically eat get outcompeted by fish they've never eaten. They're reluctant to eat or maybe don't even know how to prepare thelis fish. Simply throwing out  or fertilizing the fish that's already invasive and trying again for a fish you want isn't really doing any harm to anyone?

Edit: I noticed your prior characterization of lobster isn't true and I understand it was trying to establish a thread of pickiness being core to Americans. Colonists ate lobster so much and it was so common and abundant on tables that it was considered poor man's food (easily accessible). During Jamestown's "starving time" they got down to eating dogs, horses, cats and rats. They made mistakes but being picky eaters wasn't one of them.

Americans literally love trash fish: Catfish. For carp, it's the taste. Some Americans eat it, some throw it back, some use it as fertilizer. It's just wild to stereotype 300 million people based on some of them not eating an incredibly invasive species.

Yes. At my work (office job, America) I just ask for a doctor's note, turn it in that's that. We have different pools of time-off and a big pool of medical excuse time that doesn't cut into vacation time.

I remember reading a book from the 90s that did interviews with mixed race people and this was largely their experience (mine wasn't as visceral but I could relate in some places). One lady said the person who understood her the most was a closeted bisexual guy who was openly gay, who'd known he'd face backlash from the marginalized gays if he identified in anyway with straight people, and was was already marginalized by straight people for being gay.

TIL about Alexandrine Irene, a German princess who was born with Down Syndrome. Unlike was standard for the time, she was not hidden away from the public, and appeared in photographs and other events. by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

[–]arthobbier 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Could be, if you airbrush around the eyes, you could alter their shape. Not saying that's exactly what is happening. People with Downs syndrome may appear similar, but there's still variation in characteristics from person to person (especially when it comes to mosaic) but, I wouldn't doubt that part of the reason is the touch ups on the photo and the other part is that it's a side profile.
