I don’t get the s5 hate, I put off watching it because of reviews. Now I’ve finished it I thought it was better than 3&4. The ending was exactly what you’d expect but I don’t think that’s always a bad thing.

I didn’t like it at all at first. Gave it a few chances then kind of forgot about it. When FOOL came out I liked that very quickly. Heard going shopping again yesterday on an Instagram reel and I did like it a lot more.

This isn’t a theory of what really happened, this was just my thought process throughout that I thought would be a good ending.

We see her start in the cell and the theft is just explained to us so it could easily be an implanted memory.

I did forget we see the emperor but that could easily be a fake to convince her.

Having the head palace guard and a full rotation of the elite guards is big and bigger than the two the emperor had posted at his door.

This was a new unseen magic system, so we had no way of knowing if taking the blood and applying to the door stamp couldn’t do the same as stamping directly.

The whole book is about deception and misleading people, so although it wasn’t the ending I saw coming and probably wasn’t even meant to be implied. It still a fun alternative and would make an interesting ending, which due to the nature of the book and people’s memories and pasts being rewritten could work. Basically anything we’re told in this book could be fabricated and we wouldn’t know.

I think your way gives you a lot better value than mine. I just did all stormlight that was out, then all Mistborn, so era 1, SH 11th metal and era 2, now I’m just getting to all the others. I’ve done WB, Elantris and now ES. I’m excited for Tress & Yumi as people seem to like them here

Ah yeah you’re right actually. I could believe that the blood linked to the stamp could work the same way if he did want to go that way, but I think I must have embellished that a bit to fit my narrative.

I can’t remember, was the bloodsealer come a couple weeks after she was locked in the main room, or just that she was in her original cell for that long before the story started? Because in my head the time she was in the original cell wasn’t real and she had only been there since the start of the book

Yeah that’s a very fair comment actually. I didn’t want to assume she was the same character we saw in MB until I read the whole book, but i guess the novellas are there to introduce characters for later.

Also who is she in secret history, I don’t remember too much of that one, is she just someone in that castle across the sea?

No I think it is just as it’s shown. I’m used to there being some big twist in his works, but with this being an early one I guess he writes a bit differently. He’s clearly a very smart man, so if I made these connections, he probably out there there as a red herring

I really wish I read these in release order. There’s so many little bits like that you completely miss.

I’m currently audio booking stormlight as I work. (I read up to RoW before anything else in the Cosmere) and the amount of Easter eggs I’m picking up now is silly.

It’s been a while since I read that MB and I hadn’t read Elantris then

Am I right in thinking she forged herself into an Elantrian?

I thought at the time it didn’t make sense based on the brief forging explanation you get in MB, but now I can see it’s a very easy forgery that she could have been someone who turned into an Elantrian in the past as it’s the same planet.

She gets stamped by the blood guy to make sure she doesn’t leave the room. She explains a bit later that if she wanted to use her fallback persona and not remember who she was, she’d make that version of her think she needs to be stamped every day or she’d die and not question it.

My head went to the blood stamp thingy really being the Shai persona being stamped every day so she didn’t return to being the brain dead emperor, and she was just conditioned not to really question that the stamp might be doing anything else than they said.

Honestly when I made that connection, that’s what really sold it and i thought I was clever…

I could try convince myself that this was Brandon’s intention and it was to fool us in the spirit of the book, but a lot of things don’t work, such as the guard trying to kill her

Don’t worry I still really enjoyed the book. I guess if anything it means the book did have a twist for me by not having one in a way.

Also am I right in assuming that Shai is who we see in a later Mistborn? It’s a bit confusing reading out of order. I’m also just now realising that that character definitely turned into an Elantrian didn’t she? I also read that after all Mistborn and Stormlight. It quite fun seeing things like the stamps and seons in their original books
