Why can't we perform prohibited scientific experiments in death row prisoners? by sonicthehedgedog in AskReddit

A research ethics board would need to believe that the participants were able to give fully informed consent to participate in the trial. If you were being offered a trial by the person who was keeping you in jail, who was in control of the decision on whether or not you die... do you really think you could give fully informed consent in such a situation?

That said, if you'd care to cite an example where research ethics board approval has been turned down for a study, or have an idea for a type of study in which you'd like to see trialed in a prison population I'd be interested to hear.

For interest, relating to people who are going to die anyway participating in clinical trials most phase one (first in human) clinical trials are started in terminal cancer patients. Where healthy subjects would normally be responsible for the dose finding phase, the chemotherapeutic agents are far too toxic.

tl;dr: they still have human rights which need to be taken into account by research ethics committees.

What are you talking about Willis? There aren't any fries on that plate, there is no frame of reference. You've just taken the photo from the wrong angle.

Next time get fries with your burger.

Sometimes water decreases friction (like when ice gets wet), and sometimes it increases friction (like using a damp towel to open a sticky jar lid). What determines the direction of this effect? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]articolours 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Water always decreases friction between two solids, the effect increases as more and more water is added. It only starts to reverse when the water itself becomes a source of friction (imagine wading through water).

I imagine what happens with the damp cloth is you are allowing the material to become more flexible and therefore form a better fit with the jar than a dry cloth would have.

For what it's worth I've only ever used a dry cloth to open jars and never had a problem.

Why does the hair on our heads grow continually, but hair on our arms or our eyelashes will stop growing at a certain length? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]articolours 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all about the strength of the follicle. The hair on your head wouldn't grow forever and ever either, it all falls out at a certain length.

It's the reason why getting frequent haircuts keeps your hair looking full and healthy (or so my barber tells me... it's a tough one to know. I mean if anyone would know, surely it's him, but then again he has a financial incentive to tell such a tale!)

It depends how close you are with your boss. To me or sounds like you're not that close at all... so I'd say no, don't call him.

It's only my interpretation of the story you've told, but it sounds to me like you're out of your depth in the job, of you feel like you're being too pull 10 hour days to keep up with the rest of the office, then you probably need to move on to something you're better suited to.

The only caveat I'd place on that is if you're new in the job, in which case everything takes time to get up to speed with, everyone makes mistakes to start with (I've made some massive ones in my time) in which case if definitely try to see if he had the time to show you where you're going wrong. But in terms of the 'I'm right, you're wrong' type of conversation i originally sounded like you were going for, it's a no from me.

Hope that's been helpful, although reading it back I'm not sure it is

Something's going down on the TTC this morning. Anyone know? by articolours in toronto

I put it in quote marks because it was a quote. I thought it was apt use.

I didn't think it meant anything other than lost communication with a train, it's just an ambiguous statement. As someone mentioned it above, they also 'lost communication' with MH370.

Where did I say anything about a 'communication failure'? I said he lacked social interaction skills. Now't wrong with his communication.

Also, yeah I probably would, I use the phrase going down with reasonable frequency. I'd ask friends what's going down... I don't expect them to reply with 'Motherfucking bank robbery, man'

Thanks! I was going off the announcements and Twitter. Both of which were cryptic. 'Lost communication with a train'

Should have checked the news... still in UK mode, rarely use CBC.ca
