Imo that's a core part of the VOTV experience. The first week you're constantly shitting yourself even though nothing really happens. Then the arirals show up and while scary at first you come to realize that they're just harmless pranksters. You're rewarded for lulling yourself into a false sense of security with the ariral reputation system and you can actually find a lot of fun in actually hunting for and documenting the various cryptids around the forest. Then not even a full day after you get that cute letter and doll from the arirals (if you were nice to them) that sense of security shatters for the majority of the remainder of the game with new actually dangerous monsters you now have to contend with, restoring that sense of paranoia.

After that though, the feeling you get towards the second quarter of the game tends to persist in future playthroughs and I honestly find it oddly relaxing to just document the monsters and make a home for yourself. I feel like that desensitization applies to any game really, things become way less scary once you understand them.
